KARACHI: Almost every ruling and opposition parties have opposed the Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain’s call to ‘patriotic generals to take action similar to martial law against corrupt politicians’, saying that a civilian set-up must be supported over a military rule.

MQM chief Altaf Hussain told his party workers on Sunday that army generals had imposed martial laws in the past and so they could take a similar action again to weed out corrupt politicians and the MQM would support such an act.

Every party expressed its concern over the MQM chief’s call.

Commenting on Mr Hussain’s speech, a senior leader of the Pakistan People’s Party, Taj Haider, said that “such statements are not welcome”. However, he hastily added that he would not say anything that might affect the working relationship of the PPP and the MQM, which are coalition partner at the centre and in Sindh. “We are following the policy of reconciliation and would continue to pursue it.”

Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader Saleem Zia said that his party had a great respect for the country’s armed forces and it was a firm believer that every organisation should play its due role as envisaged in the Constitution.

He said that the army was doing a wonderful job in the fight against militancy, it had defended the country from external threats, it had done a good job in the relief and rehabilitation work after the 2005 earthquake and it was doing a good rescue and relief operation amid devastating floods.

He said that the intervention of armed forces in politics was not a good thing and earlier experiences had shown that the country suffered a lot during military rules.

He said that the MQM was a partner in the general Musharraf-led government, which was almost like a martial law, and as to why it did not ask the then military ruler to weed out corruption.

He said that corruption was rampant in the country in every segment of the society, but it was inappropriate to target just politicians.

He said that his party would never support army intervention to remove a civilian set up.

Ghaus Bakhsh Mahar of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) said that though the current civilian set up had given worst governance and corruption was rampant, yet he would not support the army intervention to disrupt the civilian set up.

He said that he believed that even worst of the democratic governments was better than the best of dictatorships.

He said that the present civilian government had failed miserably as it was taking important national decisions just for personal gains.

Amin Khattak of the Awami National Party said that his party would not support martial law.

He said that the past experience showed that the country had suffered greatly under martial laws.

He said that heroin and gun culture was the product/gifts of the past martial laws.

He said that during the military rules, sectarian and ethnic organizations were created to divide the political forces. He said that even a bad democratic government was better than a good martial law.

A leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Functional), Jam Madad Ali, said that martial law is not a good form of government and he always preferred democracy. He said that he would not support martial law.

However, he said that effective steps should be taken to check the menace of corruption. He said he would support any action taken to control corruption but under a civilian set up. He said that people of the country did not like martial laws and had always protested against the dictatorial regimes.

Jamiat Ulema Islam (F) leader Qari Usman said that their party could not support martial law as the pervious experiences had shown that the country had suffered a great deal under the army rules.

He said that to root out corruption there were proper anti-corruption laws the only thing missing was their proper implementation. He said his party would not support any new martial law.

Meanwhile, despite repeated attempts, this reporter could not able to contact any leader of the Jamaat-i-Islami to get their viewpoint.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Altaf Hussain is a big joke. He needs to shut up and hand over MQM to people present in Pakistan. He is among the "corrupt politicians" that he wiling against. I wonder what has prompted him for this statement at this point.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

I think finally the Don has gone completely crazy. This guy should be extradited and tried for treason.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

I don't get it, what recently has happened that warrants such an extreme action from military? Is his bhatta income blocked? Or is Zardari asking for 10% in his income?

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Has more to do with Musharraf's announcement of running his party from London, so Altaf Hussain is trying to "relate" with ex-brass and pretending-favorite.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

He is fasadi, he can't sit with peace.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Really? Is Mushy going to run his party from London too? :rotfl: Someone needs to file petition against people running a political party from abroad.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

LAHORE: Former president Pervez Musharraf, now residing in England, will not visit Pakistan on the launch of his newly-formed party, the All-Pakistan Muslim League (APML) in September as decided earlier, Daily Times learnt on Sunday.

According to sources close to the former president, Musharraf had decided to steer his party from London as its headquarters and he would not come to Pakistan during the current year because of some formidable challenges and serious risks he would be exposed to here.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

How nice, every beneficiary of corruptions, nepotism, incompetents, exploiter of poor and demon-crazies are worried of Martial law because they lose their bread and butter.

The slogan ‘worst democracy is better than best dictatorship’ is Lie and Propaganda of corrupt exploiters to misguide unwary masses. Fact is that it is not democracy or dictatorship that is important for a country but it is regime that should be competent, visionary, committed, hard working, organised plus certainly free from nepotism and corruption.

Pakistanis (unless they are corrupt) are also not concerned about type of government or who runs the country. For people, the best government is the government that can do best for the country’s development and progress. People want jobs, opportunities, good services, law and order, country free from nepotism, corruption and mismanagement ... and it does not matter who delivers or what type of government country has, democracy, dictatorship or Monarchy.

Unfortunately most Pakistani politicians are Liars, Crooks, Thugs, Frauds, Thieves, Immoral, illiterate, Incompetent, corrupt to the core, and have no ability to give good governance. Only thing Pakistan gets during democratic rule is corruption, nepotism, exploitation, mismanagement, misconduct plus economical and moral deterioration in every respect.

[Just imagine how illiterate bunch of crooks got rid of graduation law to get into parliament ... just because these thugs have no ability to even complete graduation ... and now Pakistanis have to deal with illiterates-jahils who could not even read or sign their own name (as today such people could be in parliament) to make laws for the country. How disgrace and unfortunate for Pakistan that illiterates who could not read word ‘law/qanoon’ in any language and may have vocabulary no more than 600 words that includes ‘gali-galooch’ enact laws of the country (in reality become rubber stamp for their party leaders who may be ‘10-jamaat pass’ and are ‘andhoon may kana raja’)].

As far as I am concerned ... Pakistan should have military rule for foreseeable future ... at least until time Pakistani economy and education in the country reaches certain level.

Personally, I would prefer if military takes over and nationalise all agricultural land over 10 acres. Impose income tax on agricultural income. Start mass accountability of every person who ever held public office or whose close relatives held public office ... that is, anyone who held political post, military post, bureaucratic posts, or any post in government service ... plus parents, children, brothers and sisters of these people. This accountability should apply on all living Pakistani who fall in above category regardless of wherever he is living (If a person is living abroad and is no more Pakistani still that person should be investigated and punished if found guilty ... at least whenever he/she visits Pakistan).

All such people with assets over Rs 500,000 in the form of property (residential, commercial or agricultural), bank balance, jewellery, car, obvious expenses (like holding huge parties – marriage or otherwise, visiting expensive hotels regularly, or sending kids abroad for education) etc should be asked to justify their assets/expenses. If these people could justify their assets/expenses (within 20 percent margin) than fine else all their assets should get confiscated and they should get executed through fast trial in special court (a harsh punishment but a necessary evil for the sake of country).

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

I am just wondering if it has something to do with Altaf Hussain's recent 3 hour long (quite unusual eh?) meeting with US Consular Gen.

If that is the case, this should be taken seriously and not another barkEE. That means something is cooking. At least options are being evaluated.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Don wants further anarchy in the country. A perfect storm is underway to cease Pak nukes. The floods could very well be the result of a HAARP. Why the clouds stay in Pak for weeks and don't move at all.
This is a very deep conspiracy against Pakistan and its nuclear assets IMO comprising last 10 years of international ghunda-gardi by the you know who.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

MQM criminal lotas always play the agencies game.

When the next govt comes, they will pledge their full 'loyalty' to them, whether it is a army or civil govt.

All so they can continue their bhatta, mobile snatching, car jacking, and murder, and much more

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

you are talking about officers of Pakistan military, right?

if the army is so 'pure' why couldn't it do anything about corruption in about a decade of Mushy rule? Oh, yes, they did do something. Gave us a gift of NRO!

Disgusting comment from a criminal absconding from law... Simply disgusting comment...!!!

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

What's heartening is that every single party has come out and condemned Altaf Bhai. Even his own two lieutenants (farooq bhai and rizvi bhai) are confused and are denying it.

Irfan Siddique, the journalist put it very aptly. According to him, altaf bhai tried very hard to please the Army Generals but failed. He said he basically went out there, offered his hands and said 'asalamualaikumwarahmatullaheywabarrakaatahu' but the Generals just said Walaikum and moved on without shaking his hand.
