KARACHI: Almost every ruling and opposition parties have opposed the Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain’s call to ‘patriotic generals to take action similar to martial law against corrupt politicians’, saying that a civilian set-up must be supported over a military rule.

MQM chief Altaf Hussain told his party workers on Sunday that army generals had imposed martial laws in the past and so they could take a similar action again to weed out corrupt politicians and the MQM would support such an act.

Every party expressed its concern over the MQM chief’s call.

Commenting on Mr Hussain’s speech, a senior leader of the Pakistan People’s Party, Taj Haider, said that “such statements are not welcome”. However, he hastily added that he would not say anything that might affect the working relationship of the PPP and the MQM, which are coalition partner at the centre and in Sindh. “We are following the policy of reconciliation and would continue to pursue it.”

Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader Saleem Zia said that his party had a great respect for the country’s armed forces and it was a firm believer that every organisation should play its due role as envisaged in the Constitution.

He said that the army was doing a wonderful job in the fight against militancy, it had defended the country from external threats, it had done a good job in the relief and rehabilitation work after the 2005 earthquake and it was doing a good rescue and relief operation amid devastating floods.

He said that the intervention of armed forces in politics was not a good thing and earlier experiences had shown that the country suffered a lot during military rules.

He said that the MQM was a partner in the general Musharraf-led government, which was almost like a martial law, and as to why it did not ask the then military ruler to weed out corruption.

He said that corruption was rampant in the country in every segment of the society, but it was inappropriate to target just politicians.

He said that his party would never support army intervention to remove a civilian set up.

Ghaus Bakhsh Mahar of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) said that though the current civilian set up had given worst governance and corruption was rampant, yet he would not support the army intervention to disrupt the civilian set up.

He said that he believed that even worst of the democratic governments was better than the best of dictatorships.

He said that the present civilian government had failed miserably as it was taking important national decisions just for personal gains.

Amin Khattak of the Awami National Party said that his party would not support martial law.

He said that the past experience showed that the country had suffered greatly under martial laws.

He said that heroin and gun culture was the product/gifts of the past martial laws.

He said that during the military rules, sectarian and ethnic organizations were created to divide the political forces. He said that even a bad democratic government was better than a good martial law.

A leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Functional), Jam Madad Ali, said that martial law is not a good form of government and he always preferred democracy. He said that he would not support martial law.

However, he said that effective steps should be taken to check the menace of corruption. He said he would support any action taken to control corruption but under a civilian set up. He said that people of the country did not like martial laws and had always protested against the dictatorial regimes.

Jamiat Ulema Islam (F) leader Qari Usman said that their party could not support martial law as the pervious experiences had shown that the country had suffered a great deal under the army rules.

He said that to root out corruption there were proper anti-corruption laws the only thing missing was their proper implementation. He said his party would not support any new martial law.

Meanwhile, despite repeated attempts, this reporter could not able to contact any leader of the Jamaat-i-Islami to get their viewpoint.

Military taking over would be the best thing for Pakistan. There would be economic reforms and also less corruption. But for now democracy should flourish.

Military taking over would be the best thing for Pakistan. There would be economic reforms and also less corruption. But for now democracy should flourish.

bhai meray yeh military nay hi tu ais nubat tak mulak ku puhanchaya hai. Military ka kaam hukumat kerna nahin hai. yeh sara budget jo army per kharach kiya jata hai wo hukumat per qabza kernay kay liyay nahin hai.

Guys…this is nothing new…in Pakistan…a weak democracy and a strong matrial law go together…what a unique combination!

PS: But I don’t think that martial law is imminent at this time…

no, he has not gone nuts. the fact that military rule will be the lesser of the evils is just more palatable to him than to others because he doesn't stand to lose anything......

He stands to lose nothing because he knows he's never going to be PM or President of Pakistan(Well atleast not in another 20 years).

Imran Khan was very much against Musharraf and suffering of *Adliya *and now he wants that back. Strange

My message to Pakistan army is that ... You are not guard dog that your duty is only to save the country from outside enemy so that worse enemy sitting inside the country destroy the country. If you are patriotic and love your country ‘Pakistan’ than you have to first save the country from enemies sitting within Pakistan (thug and thief politicians, corrupt government servants, corrupt judges and police officials, corrupt bureaucrats, corrupt journalists, parasite Jageerdars/Zamindaars, exploiting Tribal leaders, so-called religious scholars spreading hate in the name of Islam, etc ...) who destroy the country more than any outside enemy.

Even though I support Imran Khan and never doubted his intentions; while I understand while he said that, I do not agree with him at all. The PPP government was elected by the people. What went on behind close doors, i.e. the deal between Musharraf and Zardari in order to ensure Musharraf's safe exit from the country brought upon the NRO and various criminals back to power. What we need to fight for is the removal of these corrupt elements from the Govt, most notably Zardari and Musharraf's trial to prove the Army is not above the law. I am sorry, but Imran but this decision is on the lines of that horrible candidate you selected to contest elections from Rawalpindi just recently. Imran himself knows the pitfalls of having a corrupt dictator like Musharraf. He was the first person the military dictator Musharraf would get arrested for no charge, and his family and friends, including his sisters beaten ruthlessly on the streets. Imran never got such a horrible treatment at the hands of this civilian government despite his opposition which is as venomous and effective as it was against the dictator Musharraf.

Democracy will work if we actually let the legislature to prevent criminals from becoming Presidents and Prime Ministers work. That is the true essence of sustained democracy which will nourish itself and evolve over time. Inviting the Armed forces is a huge mistake at this juncture, and I doubt the Generals or COAS is interested with the extent of mess the country is in right now.

Democracy will work if we actually let the legislature to prevent criminals from becoming Presidents and Prime Ministers work

Democracy only works when we have check and balance system in place. We lack that system and only one branch of govt has all the power. That is not democracy, that is dictatorship.

I was having just this argument with some MQM supporters last night.......
Imran understands this.......and if I were in his shoes the army is probably the lesser of the evils that I would have to ally myself with.

Democracy only works when we have check and balance system in place. We lack that system and only one branch of govt has all the power. That is not democracy, that is dictatorship.

That is where an independent, supreme judiciary would come in. We started to see some light recently, when the SC overruled and turned down the NRO but the Govt seems to go into panic mode, and with all these problems looming nothing really comes into play.

Out of 63 years Army has ruled over Pakistan for nearly 35 years, all of them corrupt and failed rulers. And those jawans at front line or helping in disasters will be doing their job regardless of army in rule because it's always the low rank soldiers who are at front line.

I have always been against army rule and in favour of democracy, still am, but find it very difficult to support this govt, the most incompetent and corrupt Pakistan has probably seen. At the moment if the army was to takeover I would be neutral. Pakistan is being destroyed while these nincompoops are clueless as what to do.
