Allama Iqbaal and his role in Pakistan's Independance

I mean really you dont have an Idea who is Allamah Iqbal?

Hint: The one who wrote the Indian Anthem.

Re: Love is merely a word

^i was raised in the States like a couple others here and i really dont' know who allama iqbal is

btw didn't R. Tajore write the indian national anthem? in the time that i've spent with indian muslims and other indians online that's what i've always heard, i might be wrong...........

Re: Love is merely a word

*Tagore

Re: Love is merely a word

Some interesting irony. Indians have the national anthem and two national songs - Iqbal's 'Saare jahaan se' and a sanskrit 'Vande Mataram'. I cannot point to many Indians who know 'Vande' in full or are have even heard it once! While "saare jahaan se' being in the spoken hindi is pretty popular and known in most of india!

Re: Love is merely a word

no, it's funny but i knew nothing much about indian history before interacting with other Indians and specifically indian muslims now i've gained so much knowledge :D. vande mataram is a national song, most countries don't even have national songs.....i don't feel like it's very secular though, it's a nice song to listen to but jana gana mana is the national anthem and i feel has no religious connections, totally secular.

it's good to know that sare jahan was written by iqbal, being a pakistani and all. isn't the pakistani one written by tagore or some indian poet....something wierd like that : D

ugh sorry T1000 just realized Aaho and i are totally moving away from the topic of the thread.

Re: Love is merely a word

well I will share a video discussion about it (urdu). Although u r neglecting the facts. =]

Re: Love is merely a word

iqbal was one of the poet and philosopher who had deep impact on sub-continent independence .. .. and Rumi was one of his Inspirational personality. There are Ph.D degrees on allama iqbal poetery in Punjab University, Pakistan. My cousin, she did a thesis on Rumi and his influence on Iqbal's poetery. I don't have that much content about him and don't have time to search for but here is a para that i found on Wikipedia

[quote]

The poetry and philosophy of Mawlana Rumi bore the deepest influence on Iqbal's mind. Deeply grounded in religion since childhood, Iqbal would begin intensely concentrating on the study of Islam, the culture and history of Islamic civilization and its political future, and embrace Rumi as "his guide." Iqbal would feature Rumi in the role of a guide in many of his poems, and his works focused on reminding his readers of the past glories of Islamic civilization, and delivering a message of a pure, spiritual focus on Islam as a source for socio-political liberation and greatness. Iqbal denounced political divisions within and amongst Muslim nations, and frequently alluded to and spoke in terms of the global Muslim community, or the Ummah.[4]

Re: Love is merely a word

Iqbals poetry will make any muslim cry, even today :) .. .. his 2 poems .. Shikwa and then Jawab-e-Shikwa are mind blowing.

I remember, Here i was talking to some arabic guy and all of sudden we started talking about muslims and history and he asked me what is the guy name who wrote a poem in which he is complaining to God that he is not doing justice to us and then in other poem the God replies .. .. .. the very first thing that i said .. "you guys know this poem" and he said .. .. the writing of this person is really apprecaited in our region ..

Re: Love is merely a word

shikawa and jawab e shikwa is sung by egyptian singer Umme Kalsoom in Arabic . She was and still considered as top singer of her times ( i didnt like her though coz i didnt understand a word she was saying :-D) b ut the point is even egyptian knows and like Alama Iqbal. Its strange from a pakistani saying she/he doesnt know him :-\

Re: Love is merely a word

I don’t think that manisha is pakistani .. .. ..

I know lots of pakistani here who does not know him .. .. ..

When i was kid we used to make fun of his poetery .. “khudi ko kar buland itna k har sardi say pehlay .. khuda banday say khud puchay bta teri razai kaha hai” .. .. .. .. but now i have realized the true meaning and the depth of his poetry .. I even wrote a blog post on this particular stanza .. .. Can we really change our destiny? | Something for life .. what made me write that was my real life incidents and that made me feel the depth of his poetry

Re: Love is merely a word

and i’m a SHE :stuck_out_tongue: just wanted to add that : D

i’ll check out some of his poems, if they are anything like Rumi’s i might even be a fan :). love love Rumi:wub:

btw, there are poems of Rumi’s where he mentions wine, are they all really devotional?

jokes aside his poetry is really really deep. I love lots of phrases n shairs from his poems. there was a tv program they arranged on one of his birthday or death anniversary where new singers had sung his kalaam. i say MIND BLOWING that was. I got the cd for that as soon as i got to Lahore. I am trying to recall the name of the program n cd. i m getting old :-\
