All about diapers...

So I have been told by several people that diapers size on the box doesn’t always match the weight and size that your baby will be wearing.. Withiut that, it does seem rocket science to me!

We are expecting our first baby in November inshallah.. We have so far bought the pampers swaddlers newborn size (pack of 84) I am curious to know how many diapers we will be using with the newborn? How would I tell when to go a size up? We are member of amazon subsricbe and save so the diapers will need to be ordered inadavnce (at least 4 days) How will I figure out the size.. Do they outgrow diapers in a day or two or what? How long do they usually stay in one size?

Re: All about diapers…

You can always run and get more when you see you’re running low. No need to stock up right now, except maybe for the first week or so.

Babies go through growth spurts. Mine stayed in her swaddlers for a while cuz she was early, then zoomed through 1 to 2 pretty fast. There isn’t really a good way to predict, but usually you’ll get AT LEAST a couple weeks and even several months as they get older. And it’s true, usually the weight is not a good indicator. It’s more about height, and even then I’ve just gone with what feels right (tho initially I didn’t know to do that – it just didn’t occur to me to trust my instincts! :smack: ).

Re: All about diapers...

I was once told by someone to estimate about 10 diapers/day for a newborn. This was before I had mine and actually this is true.
Regarding the sizes on the box, every baby is different. But generally they do wear a size bigger than what is on the box.
In case of an emergency, that is if you run out or need some urgently you can always get a pack from any pharmacy and order them online in the meanwhile.
How you know what size they have to wear,I guess you just know.Just like if you dress them in clothes too big or small, you will know...same goes for diapers. It wont happen in a day or two that they outgrow one size....if you put on a size bigger they will not fit around the legs and you will be able to see and you will know.
A pack of 84 diapers should last you about 8-10 days.Maybe get another one in NB size.Maybe you will get some from the hospital (I did) so keep that in mind.
Regarding how long they stay on one size....hmmm its different for every baby.I recall my daughter wore NB size for a few weeks (I think 5-6).
She wore size 1 for a few weeks. Then size 2 for 2 months. Then size 3 for another 2-3 months. She was in size 4 around the time she was 7-8 months old.She has been in size 5 since she was 10-11 months old.I still use size 5 for her (she is now 18 mths old,m'A) and I put a size 6 on her for the night.Once I use up size 5's I will transition to size 6 (which should be in about a month).
So I guess you get an idea.
Also if you worry about it,you can order a box of size 1 and keep it aside. Not that you will be using it immediately but you will have it and use it eventually.

Re: All about diapers...

I haven't read all the replies but this is my exeperience. I didn't start from N diapers... I went right onto size one. Sometimes you can just adjust the diapers on how lose or how tight you want to put it. You'll know when to go a size up... its just something you'll see and know. I did go by weight and for me it worked. My baby started having accidents when I knew I had to go from size 2 to size 3 and now its all good. 84 is just the begining. You'll need a lot more. I buy from babies r us and I get a good deal on buying them in bulk. I buy 2-3 boxes each time which has over 200 diapers. Now I know what my baby wears and how long those diapers are good for so I know what to buy when I buy in bulk. I would definitely buy one box of size one just in case the newborn are too small. If you buy them on deal buy two size one.. you'll need them later on anyway. I save money by buying in bulk.

Re: All about diapers...

Register for Amazon Mom. It's worth it, especially if you get Amazon Prime. Good prices for diapers and 2-day free shipping. Hard to beat! Some days the order comes the same day I make it!

Re: All about diapers...

I was thinking of starting the exact same thread. So confused about what size to buy and stock up on.

You're so right! Nothing beats Amazon Mom and their Subscribe and Save option! It's SO cheap to order from Amazon but that's why I am confused. I can't decide what size to subscribe to for the first 2-3 months. I was thinking of just buying the Newborn size for now and start subscribing from Size 1.

Re: All about diapers...

both my boys were born healthy 7-8lbs and only wore size (n) for a few days then moved up to 1 .. my younger one had red pressure marks on his side and between his thighs i noticed when i changed him so thats what made me go up in size.. so everytime they show up i go up a size. my son is 2 and wears a size 4 pampers cruisers but for huggies he wears a size 5.

Re: All about diapers...

Thanks girls ..looks like we will just learn that with the baby.. there is no hard set formula regarding this. We ordered a small pack of 84 for newborn because we dont know about his weight etc and didnt want to have too many newborn diapers at hand considering everyone keeps telling me that we will get some from the hospital too.

I guess as soon as he is born, within couple of days we will order another box of newborn or Size 1, and then go from there! Since we find a good deal online, I really want to avoid that running to the pharmacy for couple of diapers but looks like we will not need to do so and will get a heads up before switching to the next size.

Spiral...My husband has that Amazon subsrcibe and save account so it's really cheap for both diapers and wipes.. we also ordered a big box of pampers sensitive wipes and found a pretty good deal!

ps: the newborn diapers are sooo small and cute.. I had never seen them before, I am in love with those diapers.. and and and they have that wet indictor thing on them.. perfect for first time parents otehrwise how in the world we will know that a diaper change is needed!! I am excited :-)

Re: All about diapers...

^ LOL they are cute. And chips is right, the hospital will probably send you home with some.

cherryontop -- we haven't actually been subscribing because I'm never sure about size either. We really could now that she's older, but then I keep wondering about pottytraining.

Re: All about diapers...

Awww im soo excited for u too GTG how long to go nOw??

Re: All about diapers...

cherryontop.. we have subsrcibed for every 2 months for diapers and 3 montsh for wipes but we can always change the date and size.. so we will be placing another order after the baby will arrive in 6-7 weeks inshaAllah.. you can play around with the dates!

Mizzkhan.. I will be 33 weeks tomorrow inshaAllah.. at least 4 and at most 7 more weeks to go inshaAllah :-)

Re: All about diapers...

oh the wetness indicator thing on the diapers...yes it was great..!!...
I still remember how we used to peek very so often to see for color changes.I think they dont make those in bigger sizes. We did not know that and my husband did hours of net search looking for them until someone told us that we can use diapers without th eindicator and we will still know when to change her.We thought we will never know, but you know what...we actually did...
Yaaay first time parents.!!!

Re: All about diapers...

lol so chipsy how do we know if the diaper is wet???

I can so picture my husband doing that net search and getting frustrated :D

Re: All about diapers...

^It is VERY obvious when the diaper is wet.

Re: All about diapers...

Don't order in advance. You really wont know what size you need until you need it and the hospital gives you tons of stuff to get you through the first 2 weeks or so.

Re: All about diapers...

sahar... lol ok I trust you!

njgal.. we already ordered some :$ I hope we will get tons of stuff and also use these up!! We are not ordering another box until after the baby is here!!! I like looking ath the diapers in the closet, all neatly arranged!! it's such a surreal feeling!! Alhamdulillah

Re: All about diapers...

another reason not to pre-order too much stuff is to make sure the diaper is good for your child. Some diapers have tendencies to cause rashes. For us pampers worked well....some other companies not so well. And my advice to you regarding wipes is don't use too many in the beginning. If you will be home, wipe them with just a regular napkin soaked in warm water.....(no chemicals) and then just do a quick wash of their bum and dry before putting on papmers.....air dry....to help prevent diaper rash......

not sure about others but my kids reacted differently to different wipes......some chemicals in some wipes caused diaper rash to come on......so just buy in small quantities and test it out, then go bulk if you need.

Re: All about diapers...

pampers swaddlers are the best diapers! i wish they made them for larger sizes. my kid was over 7 lbs so he was never in newborn diapers which go up to 7 lbs, i think. now he wears pampers cruisers which are also excellent and much better than pampers baby dry. you can tell pretty easily when they outgrow the diaper, gtg- its tight around their waist lol when you go to velcro it up.

have you bought Penaten? my paed and the hospital both recommended it to prevent diaper rashes but pampers are very good in that they wick away the moisture from baby's skin so when you change him, he'll never actually be wet himself- the diaper just absorbs everything.

Re: All about diapers…

Oh incase you want to keep something at hand for diaper rashes,my pediatrician and another friend recommended triple paste.
I never had the issue of diaper rashes with my daughter, except for once and that too we think happened because of some new wipes and at that time no OTC diaper rash cream worked for her.
I have always kept triple paste at home and used it sometimes. It contains Zinc oxide and cornstarch and few other things which help keep the area dry,and protected from moisture.
It is actually very easy to prevent diaper rashes if you are vigilant about changing and preferable wash, acc to my experience. But baby skin is so sensitive it can still happen…:frowning:

Re: All about diapers...

Afro.. makes sense, we ordered pampers swaddlers because I had read good reviews about it.. just in case, they didnt work we will try another brand but looks like people didnt have issues with pampers!

wipes.. I was thinking the same thing and we ordered the bog box mainly for use outside the house.. at home, we would rather just wash him up and put the diaper on!

sgc.. the pampers swaddlers that we got for newborn say upto 10 pounds.. I have a very strong feeling he will be somewhere between 6 and 7 pounds because at 33 weeks he measured at 3.5 pounds, give or take!!

I had never heard of penaten or triple paste but I got three desitin in different baskets at my baby shower.. and my sister swears by oil and water in case her children ever get a diaper rash! I hope I wont have to use any of these!!

regarding air dry... my baby will be a winter baby so I dont think I will let him lie there butt naked.. can we blow dry their tushies? lnot with the hot air obviously.. just wondering :$
