Re: Aliens in America
^ they are actually making fun of themselves by showing that most white and black americans do have that ignorant that's why words like "muslimism" are being used. I'm sure most people are just as ignorant
I wish they had used a more common pakistani name for the character...it would've made more sense.
Raja is a very common name amongst Mirpuri-Punjabi Pakis.
In most cultures around the world the family/clan name is usually used as a second name but in some Pakistani culture(s) it is used as a first name, so amongst Mirpuri-Punjabi Pakis names like Raja Muhammed, Raja Ali, Raja Hussayn etc. are very common.
Western people think they are personal names ("Christian" names) so they get confused and wonder why they all have the same name.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
Re: Aliens in America
The show is up on alluc.org ... if anyone missed it...
Muslimism was mentioned just to show how ignorant and Jahil these amreekis are....it is not a derrogatory term in any way....
Overall ...the show isnt that good...the kid is more of an indian than a Pakistani...
Re: Aliens in America
I hope it doesn't portray Pakis/Muslims as dirty, ugly and stupid browns like most such comedies do.
Can someone upload it on YT?
Like on Seinfeld?
Re: Aliens in America
guy looks Indian.
Kali’ma wasn’t said properly.
stressed a lot on having FOB accent.
amazingly guy whoz from some Pakistani village, understood the conversation properly. ![]()
he wore tope’e all the time that signifies more that hez from madarsa student then a villager. (in pakistani dramaz, villagers are depicted with oil, taweez, and kajal )
hence, only problem is his appearance, rest he knowz angerazi, how to use faucets, flush, where to put holy book, how to dish wash, mopping, angeraiz eating etiquettes, didn’t lost when he went to skool, knows soccer (this might be possible), etc.
i wonder where is this village exists in Pakistan! ![]()
Re: Aliens in America
this show is ghetto
Re: Aliens In America
Thank God Americans did a better job portraying Muslims than Canadians (Not that I don’t love Mosque on the Prairie)
Raja’s character seems like an excellent role model. I loved the part when he prays to Allah when in stress instead of binging on food and such.
I wanted to pray afterwards …but then I got hungry :(
Re: Aliens In America
2.33 million audience
not bad for CW's Monday night
Re: Aliens In America
I didn't get to see it, but my sister watched it and she said she liked it a lot (even better than little mosque on the prairie). One of my friends also watched it and she really liked it, too.
On the other hand, it didn't get a good review in the washington post. =\

Re: Aliens In America
Yea I don't like the whole shalwaar-kameez and topi outfit. =\ They should have just made him dress like a FOB with tight faded jeans and a strached t-shirt. :D

it's not on alluc.org....did you actually see it on there?
Re: Aliens In America
First of all, if they did they typical FOB look, a lot of people wouldn't "get" the joke. This character is funny yet endearing. I think the show was well done. It may not make it past the first season, but it's still nicely done.
Re: Aliens in America
Umm…I’m not sure that you understand the humor. Calling it “Muslimism” was clearly mocking the ignorant teacher, not Raja or his religion. That’s the idea. It’s making fun of ignorance without completely alienating the ignorant. People can laugh and yet still get exposed to something new.

Even an average five-year-old US kid - after being exposed to all this "Islamic terrorist" hula that surfaces the media almost every week - knows it's "Islam" and not "Muslimism". So they should have made it clear in the show taht either the teacher was born yesterday to show such ignorance or the tv-series is being filmed in some very illiterate and disconnected place in Africa and not Wisconsin.... or otherwise, everytime i will take it as an offense and not humor.
Re: Aliens in America
Um...you'd be surprised how little small-town America really knows about Islam. They really go more on what their pastor tells them.

especially in places like iowa, utah and even some of the southern states(bible belt states). It's scary how ignorant they are about south asian culture....they have no idea. It's really sad and it feels like they don't even want to get rid of that ignorance. It might not be the case in the northeast because there people of south asia descent have been there for generations now.
Re: Aliens in America
The bible belt is the afghanistan of american and neocons the new taliban / al qaeda
Re: Aliens in America
I though the show was done poorly. The premise is interesting. I didn't find the show insulting as such, it was actually trying to poke fun at America's ignorance when it comes to Pakistanis and muslims. In that regard I liked the show.
What I hated about the show was the "Pakistani" guy himself. Nothing about him is Pakistani. They should have consulted a Pakistani for the show, they clearly consulted an Indian. His accent was irritating.
