CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Al-Qaida’s No. 2 issued a new videotape on Wednesday calling for Pakistanis to join the jihad, or holy war, in revenge for the attack by Pakistan’s army on a radical mosque.
Ayman al-Zawahri’s 4 minutes and 24 address was entitled ``The Aggression against Lal Masjid’’ and entirely focused on the recent clashes between Islamic students and Pakistan’s army at the mosque.

The video was released by al-Qaida’s multimedia branch, as-Sahab. Its authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, but two U.S.-based terrorism monitoring groups also reported it.
``Muslims of Pakistan: your salvation is only through Jihad,‘’ or holy war, al-Zawahri said in the video, which was subtitled in English.

Rigged elections will not save you, politics will not save you, and bargaining, bootlicking, negotiations with the criminals, and political maneuvers will not save you,'' a bespectacled and white-clad al-Zawahri said. Musharraf and his hunting dogs have rubbed your honor in the dirt in the service of the Crusaders and the Jews,‘’ he said.

By the Lal Majid operation, the actual honor of extremism was rubbed in sand and not of a common Muslim, Al-Zawahiri by this video tape I hope many "Muslims" on your band-wagon will leave you.

I think they (the Pakistan military) will continue to do that and aQ knows this hence this call of action against Pakistan. A successful aQ terror attack against the U.S. with a Pakistan origin will cause major problems between the countries and more so if Pakistan is not actively liquidating these terrorists and terror cells. Everything Pakistan has done and have not done in terms of the 'WoT' will be looked at through a microscope, better to be killing terrorists than to allow them to camp in your nations capitol.

I know that most of the citizens Pakistan will not like to be aligned with al qaeda, but what if 25% or even just 5% align with them. It will be a total mess.

You'll have much more support from the Pakistani public for al Qaeda in it's 'jihad' against the west than a 'jihad' against it's own country. While al Qaeda and like minded groups would love to knock down Pakistan's political structure and stability the general population see's Iraq and would be wary of welcoming such an approach one would think but as Iraq show's, you don't need the support of the general population to maintain disruption.

Key areas in defeating al Qaeda in Pakistan include; tackling political corruption (weakens the government and it's public support) , creating stronger educational institutions to draw away from radical educators and madrassas (stops the radical indoctrination), and creating investment that creates jobs which actually propel the poverty level upward (more opportunity less chance at radicalizing?) are all necessary for Pakistan but they must be done in conjunction with eliminating the poison weed that festers and is growing in the tribal regions. We've seen this poison weed creep into Pakistan's urban areas in the form of the red mosque. Weeds grow and the snuff out that which is productive. Ironic that the siege on the red mosque was named 'Operation Silence' since the growing threat in the tribal region is met with silence.

yes. opinion polls that have surfaced from time to time indicate an absolutely disturbing level of support for osama bin laden in pakistan. obviously that support applies to al-qaeda as well, by extension.

a pew research poll from a few years ago revealed a 65% favorability rating for osama bin laden in pakistan. i think a more recent poll showed a slight dip but still a clear majority.

If this is true, then it is a very serious situation. I hope US, India and the whole world is prepared for the post Musharaf Pakistan. Pakistan is potentially the most dangerous part of the world.
