Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

Sheikh Tantawi said “The niqab is a tradition and has nothing to do with Islam”.

Aside from the religious issue of whether or not niqaab is mandatory or recommended, I think that this ruling comes at a particularly bad time.

When Muslims living abroad in many countries are coming under legal pressure about how they dress or look, this risks adding to calls for Muslims in the west to stop wearing other articles of Islamic dress, such as hijabs for girls or beards for men.

Azhar Imam Orders Niqab off, Wants Ban - IslamOnline.net - News

CAIRO – The head of Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning in the Sunni world, has ordered a school girl to remove her niqab during a visit to an Al-Azhar school, saying he would seek an official ban for the face veil in schools, Al-Masri Al-Youm newspaper reported on Monday, October 5.

“Why are you wearing the niqab while sitting in the class with your female colleagues?” Al-Azhar Grand Imam Sheikh Mohamed Sayyed Tantawi asked the 8th grader.

The young girl was shocked with the question coming from the country’s top scholar.

A teacher intervened to explain.

“She takes off her niqab inside the class, but she only put it on when you and your entourage came in.”

But Sheikh Tantawi was not satisfied and insisted that the young girl takes off the face cover.

“The niqab is a tradition and has nothing to do with Islam.”

After the girl complied he insisted she should not wear it any more.

“I tell you again that the niqab has nothing to do with Islam and it is only a mere custom. I understand the religion better than you and your parents.”

Most Muslim women in Egypt wear the hijab, which is an obligatory code of dress in Islam, but an increase in women putting on the niqab has apparently alarmed the government.

The ministry of religious endowments has recently distributed booklets in mosques against the practice.

The majority of Muslim scholars believe that a woman is not obliged to cover her face or hands.

They believe that it is up to every woman to decide whether to take on the face-cover or not.

Ban

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar imam vowed to issue a ban against the face-veil in all schools linked to Al-Azhar.

“I intend to issue a regulation to ban the niqab in Al-Azhar schools,” he said.

“No student or teacher will be allowed into the school wearing the niqab.”

Established in 359 AH (971 CE), Al-Azhar mosque drew scholars from across the Muslim world and grew into a university, predating similar developments at Oxford University in London by more than a century.

Al-Azhar, which means the “most flourishing and resplendent,” was named after Fatima Al-Zahraa, daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The first courses at Al-Azhar were given in 975 CE and the first college was built 13 years later.

Al-Azhar first admitted women students in 1961, albeit in separate classes.

Also in 1961, subjects in engineering and medicine were added to classes on Shari`ah, the Noble Qur’an and the intricacies of Arabic language.

Sheikh Tantawi’s remarks coincided with those of Higher Education Minister Hani Hilal who has banned the face-veil in student hostels.

“Face-veiled students are free to do what they want outside the hostels but there is no room for the niqab inside the women-only hostels,” he said earlier this week.

Many students demonstrated against the minister’s statements and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights plans to take him to court.

“The minister’s decision violates the principles of privacy, personal freedom and freedom of faith, which are guaranteed by the constitution.”

The writer omitted to mention that the university of Alazhar was founded by Shia Imam Imam Moiz le Dinillah who also founded el Kahera ( Cairo ) and was a Fatemi Imam who conquered and rulled Egypt over 1100 years ago

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

i am not pro niqaab but its sad that in an islamic country this can happen.
well i guess if u have a presitend (dictator) sitting in chair for over 30 years and his son
waiting to replace him then anything is possible.

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

Lol it should be fine as long as hijab is still there. I'm not pro-niqab either, nor am I against it. It isn't really necessary though.

**No Surprise there........

Al Azhar scholars have also endorsed "Non Zabihah" Meat bought in Safeway and other American and British meat shops as Halal!

most Arab peoples follow that, seems only Muslims from India and Pakistan prefer Zabihah meat.

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

Al-Azhar has been coming out with a lot of un-orthodox verdicts for a few years now.

I wouldn't be surprised if Al-Azhar is headed by an Agha-Khani doing Taqqiyyah.

I'm not an authority to say if Niqaab is neccesary or not but if the girl wants to wear it he has no right to stop her.

Makes one greatful for the religious freedoms of Great Britain where I can sue my boss for religious discrimination if he tells me to shave my beard, take my skull cap off or stops me praying in the workplace.

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

leave it to tantawi to find his way into media with such issues every now and then....

although niqab is not obligatory, i dont feel people shud be told to leave out their traditions....
wonder how tantawi wud feel if someone told him to stop wearing his traditional uniform and come wearing shalwar qameez to the university....

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

Shaykh Tantawi aka Shaykh sarkozy.

Seems that muslim's interests are more secure in kuffar's hands rather than muslim's. dont U agree?

Don't be, This is the same Al-Azhar University where one of the scholar passed a fatwa ( i think 2/3 years back) that if two na-mahrams are working in same office, than the male should drink the milk of the female colleague, this will make them Mehrams...

WTH???????

this was stupid and arrogant, and not the right thing to say.

Did he take guidance from the Quran, the Sunnah, and the Hadees before he arrived at this conclusion ?

If yes - its fine (In his fatwa he can elaborate this and provide references from Sunnah and Hadees)

If not - he should be stripped of his status and someone more learned should take the role of Grand Mufti, so that such embarrasing incidents dont take place in future.

I read this in the paper today.. totally outrageous & disrespectful.

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

Excellent. :k:

About time.

As-Salamu Alaykum

Abu Huraira relates that Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "there will be a group of people in the end of the days who will bring you views that neither you or your forefathers every heard of. So be warned and let them be warned. Allow them not to misguide you and cause Fitna (i.e. in your hearts)" [Sahih Muslim: 15]

Abu Huraira narrated the prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم ) said: "In the end of the time there will be liars and fabricators who will report tales and stories that neither you or your fathers have ever heard . Be cautious of those so that they do not misguide you or tempt you" [Saheeh Ibn Habban: 6766]

Recorded in Musnad Ahmad hadeeth # 20335 that Abu Dhar said, “I was in the presence of the Prophet one day and I heard him saying, ‘There is something more I fear for my Ummah than the Dajjaal.’ It was then that I became afraid, so I said, ‘O Rasoolullaah! Which thing is it that you fear for your Ummah more than the Dajjaal?’ He [the Prophet] said. ‘Misguided and astray scholars.’

It is related by Shidaad ibn Aws that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Truly, I do not fear anything for my Ummah except astray scholars. Thus when the sword is raised against my Ummah, it will not be lifted until the Day of Judgment.” [Musnad of Ahmad, ahadeeth # 16493, 21360, 31359, 20334 and ad-Daarimi, ahadeeth # 211 and 216 and all of these collections are classed as authentic.]

may Allah save from these kinds of fitnah and keep us on haqq, ameen

Is it true that this is just being done in female-only settings? That's what I'm reading in most reports.

At first impulse I was sort of amused by the sheer purposelessness of it, given that females are 'visually halal' for each other anyway... but the fact that it's an arbitrary decision that doesn't technically make a real difference is actually quite disturbing... It's like this move was made to definitively emit some sort of image of social pseudo-progression, or is being meant as a babystep toward more serious crackdowns later on... Strange and entirely typical. The Egyptian authorities seem to be taking a leaf out of Sarkozy's paranoia handbook.

It's a pity they have time to waste making arbitrary decisions about the way females clothe themselves and apparently none to spend on addressing the real issues behind the rise in crazy extremist militant kids.

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

funny

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities

what can one say about a religion where the scholars spend their time debating whether it's okay for women to wear pants and/or niqab...

dunya chaand par puhanch gayee... hum khawateen ki pants ko rotay reh gaye..

Re: Al-Azhar University to ban niqaab in all of its educational facilities
