============================================

Pakistan fast bowling great Wasim Akram confirmed on Tuesday that he would retire after the ICC World Cup in South Africa next year.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo before Pakistan’s first game in the ICC Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka on Thursday, the 36-year-old claimed the time had come to hang up his boots.

“The World cup will be my last tournament,” he said. “There is a right time for everything and I think that will be the right time to go.”

Looking back on a career that has spanned 17 years, including 104 Tests and a staggering 342 ODIs, touching both glory and controversy, Akram claims to be leaving with no regrets.

" I have had ups and downs, my career has been a roller coaster ride," he admitted. “But it has all been worth it and I’ve had a ball.”

Providing he is selected, he hopes to bow out with a bang – a Pakistan victory in what would be his fifth World Cup.

“It would be a dream come true if we could win the World Cup. I couldn’t ask for more than that, it would be a perfect ending,” he said.

Afterwards, he is unsure what life has in store.

“I’ve no idea what I am going to do afterwards,” he said. “I am not the kind of guy that plans things. I will take six months off sleeping, watching cricket and spending time with my family.”

“I’m not the coaching sort – you have to be very organised and always be planning ahead – but I obviously I want to help cricket, promoting the game around the world.”

Akram has taken 414 Test wickets at 23.62 and 478 ODI wickets at 23.78 – the only player in the world to pass 400 in both forms of the game.

Meanwhile, left-handed opener Saeed Anwar, scorer of 8525 runs at 38.75 in ODIs, hinted that he is also on the verge of bidding farewell.

The religious 34-year-old is struggling for his place in the side and is anxious to leave on a high note.

“This ICC trophy could be the turning point of my life,” he said, somewhat dramatically. “I will see how it goes and then decide on my future.”

He explained: "I have played cricket with dignity and respect, always performing at the highest level. I still have the zest for cricket but do not want to hang around if I am not performing.

“I wanted to play another two years but I think it is the right time to go,” he said.

Unlike Akram, he expects to make a clear break with the game: “I won’t hang around the game, not as a commentator, not as an umpire or coach.”

Is Saeed Anwar reitiring?
He said he will decide after ICC Champions Trophy.
There is no way in world he can retire with WC right around the corner.

By ICC Trophy does he mean the tournament in Sri Lanka cos i assume he meant the ICC World Cup......

yeh 194 still ring the same bell of destruction for india...you guys won't miss him 4ever!!

I remember how he slaughtered Anil Kumble and other bowlers in that inning...

Saeed is one of the best wrist player of all time!!

Akram is one of the all time great bowlers, SAnwar too has had a rewarding career-sad for the game.

aaah … no saeed and akram for Pak after WC :frowning:
Will india play Pakistan now ?? or they will wait for Inzi, Waqar , Saqi, shooaiboo and Razzaq to retire :hehe:

And don’t forget Afridi, Nazir, Mahmood, Malik, Yasir Arafat, Fazel E Akbar etc..

Pakistan will loose their best batsman and their best bowler.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t it too early for Saeed retiring.
He is about 34 or 35 years old and concerning he’s a batsman, he should go all the way to 37 or 38 years than he should be retiring.

Alec Stewart is about 40.
Gooch and Imran also retired around 40.
Arjun Ranatuga retired like when he was around 60,(being sarcastic).
I can understand a bowler retiring in mid 30s but batsman’s careers should be furthered couple more years.
You got Waugh brothers who are 37 years old but still itching to play cricket.

About time, I say.

Great bowler and all.

It should be vice vera!!!

well lets hope saeed makes runs in icc tropphy
that way he will not think to retire...
pakistan ke liye match jeet jaaye and then he cant retire...
About akram well cricket will be incompletet without him
pakistan team will be incomplete without him...

:teary3:

Am gonna miss Wasim for sure :crying: :crying: :crying:

Lahaore Mein Kahan Rathi Ho

I heard he was coming to Houston to become a coach but in this article he said that he has no intentions to be a coach, which one should I believe.

Saeed may retire after Holland match

By our correspondent

KARACHI: Pakistan opener Saeed Anwar is considering announcing retirement from international cricket after the match with Holland at the ICC Champions Trophy in Colombo. Saeed, who told the team management after arriving in Colombo that he didn't want to be a burden on the team, was considering to quit before the World Cup, said sources. Though the left-hander top-scored with 52 in Pakistan's eight-wicket loss to Sri Lanka on Thursday in the Champions Trophy opener, he has struggled to find his prime form.

A PCB source said that Saeed didn't want to put himself into a position where the selectors decided to drop him as he wanted to retire gracefully. "The only problem facing him is that his team-mates have been telling him that Pakistan require his experience at the moment and he should delay taking a decision on retirement till the Test series against Australia is completed next month."

Rated among the most accomplished run-getters in one-day and Test matches, Saeed since late last year has taken to practicing and preaching religion following the death of his daughter. As a result many people have questioned his commitment to the game although he himself has insisted he wanted to continue till the World Cup. The source said Saeed was likely to take a decision on his retirement after the September 21 match with Holland.

No way is he crazy?
He is finally slowly getting back into form and he is considering retiring and specially before playing Australia in a test series and 6 months before the World Cup.
I think Saeed is probably thinking that he will end up like Miandad who was forced to retire by the public media, he is a great batsman only the age of 35, he still has probably 2 or 3 years still left in him and he is judging his performance from jst couple bad innings.
