Aitzaz-Kayani ‘Private’ Meeting Causes Stir in Political Circles
ISLAMABAD — Top leader of lawyers’ movement and central leader of Pakistan People’s Party Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan recently met army chief Gen. Ashfaque Kayani causing stir in political circles already agog with wild guessing game about future of present setup.
Aitzaz has been sidelined in the PPP because of his leading role in the lawyers’ movement for restoration of deposed judges. His membership of the central executive committee of the party was suspended early this year and he has been excluded from all party activities. He, however, insisted he would not quit the party saying he has invested decades of his political career and made sacrifices for it.
Aitzaz confirmed media reports but insisted he remained committed to democracy and was opposed to army’s role in politics in any form. “It was purely a private meeting,” Aitzaz said when asked by reporters. He said that when the army chief spoke to him on March 16 during the long march when it had reached Gujranwala on way to Islamabad, he invited him for a cup of tea. Aitzaz said he accepted the invitation but could not meet him till 10 days ago. The long march was called off after the acceptance of main demand of restoration of deposed judges including Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry.
When asked whether the Supreme Court case and army’s possible political role were discussed during the meeting with Gen. Kayani, Aitzaz said that he was neither Sharifuddin Pirzada nor Malik Qayyum. He said he would never encourage, facilitate or advise any political role for the army.
“It was, however, a pleasant meeting and army’s successes in Swat and FATA were discussed,” Aitzaz said. When pressed further, he said that golf also came under discussion. Aitzaz said he was committed to the democratic system. “The case in the Supreme Court was neither discussed nor he has any role to play in the proceedings or decision of the case,” he added.
He said that he had a commitment to the democratic system and an independent judiciary. When asked if there were likely to be any further meetings between the two, Aitzaz said that they may play golf together in future but no politics would be discussed.

My comments: I find this kind of thing quite puzzling. Why does the lawyers leader Aitzaz Ahsan need to meet the Army Chief especially after the lawyers movement core argument was against army intervention.
