Aitzaz-Kayani ‘Private’ Meeting
Causes Stir in Political Circles

ISLAMABAD — Top leader of lawyers’ movement and central leader of Pakistan People’s Party Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan recently met army chief Gen. Ashfaque Kayani causing stir in political circles already agog with wild guessing game about future of present setup.

Aitzaz has been sidelined in the PPP because of his leading role in the lawyers’ movement for restoration of deposed judges. His membership of the central executive committee of the party was suspended early this year and he has been excluded from all party activities. He, however, insisted he would not quit the party saying he has invested decades of his political career and made sacrifices for it.

Aitzaz confirmed media reports but insisted he remained committed to democracy and was opposed to army’s role in politics in any form. “It was purely a private meeting,” Aitzaz said when asked by reporters. He said that when the army chief spoke to him on March 16 during the long march when it had reached Gujranwala on way to Islamabad, he invited him for a cup of tea. Aitzaz said he accepted the invitation but could not meet him till 10 days ago. The long march was called off after the acceptance of main demand of restoration of deposed judges including Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry.

When asked whether the Supreme Court case and army’s possible political role were discussed during the meeting with Gen. Kayani, Aitzaz said that he was neither Sharifuddin Pirzada nor Malik Qayyum. He said he would never encourage, facilitate or advise any political role for the army.

“It was, however, a pleasant meeting and army’s successes in Swat and FATA were discussed,” Aitzaz said. When pressed further, he said that golf also came under discussion. Aitzaz said he was committed to the democratic system. “The case in the Supreme Court was neither discussed nor he has any role to play in the proceedings or decision of the case,” he added.

He said that he had a commitment to the democratic system and an independent judiciary. When asked if there were likely to be any further meetings between the two, Aitzaz said that they may play golf together in future but no politics would be discussed.

My comments: I find this kind of thing quite puzzling. Why does the lawyers leader Aitzaz Ahsan need to meet the Army Chief especially after the lawyers movement core argument was against army intervention.

You never know what they want to do :
But Pakistan and People of Pakistan are loosing day by day.
Have you seen SC decision
Some PCO judges are throwing other PCO judges out.
These men were behind them

Perhaps the army is worried about an independent judiciary.

Perhaps they still against democracy/

Actually, Punjabi elite, from Kiyani to Gilani, from Nawaz to Shehbaz, and from Itizaz to Choudri Iftikhar are conspiring against Zaradari because he is a Sindhi. This is the same thing they have been doing against Liaaqat Ali Khan, Bhutto, Benazir, Musharaf, etc.

There is truth to your statement. The characters you mentioned cannot afford to lose control of the setup they have a it benefits them so much.

^^ pro MQMs nice ones..

Pro Elitists, not so nice. Ask LoTD when he joined MQM.

Please do not hide Zardari's incompetence under the shroud of provincialism. He's being criticized because of his incompetence and everyone knows how he "became" the President. For all we know, Musharraf might be responsible for BB's murder because he ordered all evidence washed off within minutes after the incident.

Provincial hatred is just another form of racism, try looking at the wider picture w/out your fogged lens.

Never miss an opportunity to stoop to the lowest of the low and resort to provincialism, eh?

I never miss an opportunity to state the truth or agree with the truth. I am not blind to pakistan, where fake convictions against who the state does not like stand, but known terrorists like hafiz saeed, sufi and sons are released within days despite ample evidence.

whatever floats your boat. don't get provincial, no one appreciates your racist remarks that never cease. thanks.

Basic facts always turn into racism, but calling mohajirs kaliya and other choice words which is common among the punjabi elite is all in good clean "fun". Totally get it.

when you spot me or others calling the entire community such names, let the mods know. so far it's been you who always comes swinging with racist remarks.

now stop wasting bandwidth and get back to topic. thanks.

Aitzaz and Kiyani can meet as private citizens, if they meet formally they should answer and share what the meeting was about.

Re: Aitzaz-Kayani ‘Private’ Meeting

Kiyani is doing everything he can to save the ex-uniform brother. If mushy is convicted (which I do not believe would happen), it would be a deterrent for future generals wishing to conquer the country again.

well "brother" dear is safe so long as he stays out of Pakistan in following the tradition of previous leaders who looted, disregarded constitution and ran at crunch time.

Chances are like you said he may not be prosecuted to the extent everyone would hope, and he will probably find himself in KSA Suroor Palace, Jeddah. KSA is the only place where i can see him getting complete immunity because Pakistani politicians will not touch him there for the sake of Saudi Monarch's regard they all hold. England could be trouble for him because the land has previously prosecuted foreign dictators under pressure and repatriated them back. USA doesn't treat its weathered friends with rose petals either, case in point, Shah of Iran who was protected for a while and then done away with.

Kiyani could be meeting with Aitzaz for a number of reasons, and major one of them being Musharraf-Zardari preservation because deal lies in PPP being in power. PML-N will probably swing either way when the opportunity comes; such is the nature of politicians.

Zaradari is not as corrupt as Nawaz Sharif pampered and benefited by Ziaul Haq, Jilani, and other powerful generals from Punjab...He is politically more astute and courageous as well compared to Nawaz...his only fault is, he is a Sindhi and doesn't have the powerful establishment, media, industrial lobby, etc. pre-dominently from Punjab backing him.

Ada, hi maarhoo tawahan jey zardari jey barey maan cha-tho chowondo pio ahai ?

Btw: He was killed in an ‘Encounter’ very soon after this

What do you want to prove here by cut and paste this retard video? He also said some retard remarks about mqm.

Have you ever seen any public address of his father or BB? If you compare with them, yeh un ki jooti key barabr bhi nahin hay. He seemed to be very emotional, with broken thoughts and sometimes below average remarks. I pity on him the way he was expressing his thoughts. He was no more than a mohalla committee speaker. Some one in background was telling him what to say! A much below average speech, without any sense to kids of goth did not make him politician. He was just venting his frustrations. His speech was basically bashing Police officers on arresting some Ali Sonaro (who the hell was he I have no clue), threatening police officers Sudal, Durrani and Imtiaz Channa. He also vented his frustrations against Zardari, BB and Abdullah Shah (I think he was former CM Sindh, he is dead now)

It is unfortunate that he was killed, perhaps due to his own stupidity. He needed a psychologist to treat his metal illness, or depression. He should not have been killed for uttering below average remarks against police officials.

I agree with you here. But since NS is Punjabi, he has support of powerful estabilishment, media, industrial lobby as you said. He entered in political arena with besakhis of generals and ISI money (formation of IJI) with the salogan such as "Jag Punjabi Jag Tere Pug Mein Lag Gai Aag" Who can forget this while opposing BB in elections.

Thank you for the translation -

The objective was not a comparison of his eloquence & charisma to that of his father or his elder sibling- The objective was solely that the criticism that is poised against zardari - is also shared by some circles in Sindh.., It was also to give a glimpse of Mr Zardaris political astuteness & courage as to how Murtaza Bhutto's political challenge was handled in spite of the fact as you mentioned yourself he was no match to his sibling; yet it was considered that it is better to get him out of the way.

I am a firm believer in letting the peoples verdict be final - My arguing for MQM in another thread was not because of any support for them but because of this principle alone , based on this principle Zardari has every right to be the President- & his opponents have every right to criticize him -
You make your own judgment whether in the long run will this make People Party(the only truly federal political party in Pakistan) strong or weaker.
