now, we have the luxury to travel in the comfortable air-conditioned coaches on a train. can u tell us how our ancesters travelled when there was no air-conditioned coaches on the trains. any ideas?

They sat in the fridge and put that on Gadha gari and traveled, all the air was conditioned

OK, I think people kept themselves cool the same way the rich did before the advent of air-conditions.
Both my grandfathers worked in the Railway department of India and then Pak. I don't know a lot but I have heard about saloons in which the family would travel and which were resonably luxurious. Also apparently there were nice dining departments where good food could be had!

wowwwwwwwww...achchhaa...i am glad to hear that...so u've some idea...one way that i'm aware of is very intuitive which i will share in a couple of days. aother way to keep cool during long dusty journeys was to amke the salons AIR-COOLED by covering the windows with a mesh made by dried grasses called "Khas kii TaTTii" over which water wud be sprinkled at major stations. in those days, trains didn't run more than an hour or two without stops unlike now in India where trains run non-stop for 7-9 hours.**

what a basic, crude and practical way of coolings a coach. these ice blocks wud melt by the train’s next scheduled stop where more ice blocks wud be loaded :)**
