It's not just a simple case of following a human. It's case of following Allah. If He appoints someone for mankind as savior/nabi/informer, its the duty of His people to respect that person and follow him.
Only argument left is how to recognize him. That's where lies the test of each soul.
Do you think humans could have been made smarter or programmed more so they ‘followed’ god’s instructions better?

Its by God's design that he has created good and evil. People who follow His path are the one who have no fear.
Allah sends prophets to inform His people to beware of wrond doings. Prophets come just to inform them and cure them. Whats so bad in that. They are the blessings from God Almighty. Allah raise standards of people who become His Messengers and speaks with them and by their hands form a community of pious people.
Why can;t god come down herself instead of dealing with intermediaries? it;s like playing telephone at the party, by the time the message gets to you, you have no choice but to strap a suicide belt adn blow a few jews up.
Why should there be evil in the first place..whats there to fear about? All these negative words tsk tsk…If God is all loving His (In Matsui’s case Her) creation should feel loved too…not by fear of anything or correcting themselves every step of the way… or asking the ‘pious’ ones for directions. 
I agree. God cannot be that cruel. <-also negative. Tyrants rule through fear. God is not a tyrant.

agreed… God has not put fear in our hearts.. its the so called sholars and molvis… and the ‘well read ones’..
and why do we humans need to go to pious man for interpretation or a better understanding…? if we cannot understand the words of the Quran by ourselves.. we should keep reading.. and if we still dont understand.. than leave it..
who can guaranty that the pious man u have turned to has a better understanding? or a correct one? sheesh people… we’ve been given brains… use em for once
