a common misconception… what is meant is that he collected at least 500,000 (or whatever the exact figure was) different chains of transmission (isnads) for the hadith that he knew…
it doesn’t mean the rest weren’t also sahih in his view… and he didn’t just get “rid of the rest”, he collected many other hadith that aren’t in Sahih al Bukhari in some of his other works such as in Adab Al Mufrad, Juz Rafa’ al Yadain, Khalq Afal al Ibad… all three of which are published…
it’s only in the translations or commentaries of Sahih al Bukhari that you get 9/10 volumes… the original Arabic text of Sahih al Bukhari alone can be found in just two or three volumes… in fact i’ve seen the entire work in just one (thick) volume as well with particularly small type…
