Salaam, is namaaz accepted with them on?
not a mufti, and not an islamic scholar, but i think it is the alcoholic drinks that r prohibited and not the perfumes and all....
plus these things contain very dilute and small amounts of alcohol....
how many % of pakistani drink alcohol particularly elite army officers?
what's the point of having alcohol in aftershaves, perfumes e.t.c?
what does it (alcohol) do to them?
first i am not at all claiming any real knowledge on this. Just my impressions. anything right is from Allah anything wrong is from me and my own faults.
in reading this you must agree not to believe me if i’m wrong… yeah that sounds about right…
from my own research on this, i found in sahih bukhari v7b69n490:
"Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Alcoholic drinks were prohibited. At that time these drinks used to be prepared from unripe and ripe dates. "
The consumption of alcohol is prohibited. I have never read anything that said that the wearing of products containing acohol is prohibited.
:halo:
UMS, alcohol is used in aftershaves because of its anticeptive nature and there must've be 10 other reasons (chemically).
i am sure that alcohol is not in aftershaves and perfumes just to piss Muslims off.
WELL....WAT I'VE HEARD/READ......ITS NOT PERMISSIBLE TO USE THESE ALCOHOL CONTAINING PERFUMES ETC. COZ ALCOHOL IS NAJAS (IMPURE)......SO WITH IMPURITY ON YOUR BODY OR CLOTHES YOU CAN'T OFFER PRAYERS
YOU CAN FIND, IF U LIKE, THOSE WHICH R ALCOHOL FREE........THEY DO EXIST THOUGH NOT IN A WIDE RANGE

ALCOHOL IS NAJAS (IMPURE)......

Where did you get this from? Alcohol is used to sterlize everything in the medical profession. You get swabbed with Alcohol before you are injected. This is the case in ALL countries of the world.
Afia, first off, it is considered rude to be typing in all caps, it's considered yelling. Secondly, please back your claims with some references, this "It's true because I say so" attitude can be very damaging in the religion forum.

Although I've never heard of alcohol being considered Nijis, i've definitely heard the word impure used in describing alcohol. We should also be sure to make a clear distinction between drinking alcohol which is prohibited (see above) and alcohol that is not drunk

I am curious to know in what sense is the word "impure" used with reference to Alcohol. Is it because liquor is not 100% Ethanol? Is it because of the presence of bacteria and the fermentation process or is it in reference to the effects of imbibing Alcohol? Ethanol (70--100% by volume) is used for sterlization (externally of course) pretty much everywhere.
the alcohol that is used in fragrence or after shave is given the name alcohol because of it's occurance in same group of periodic table.. it is not THE ALCOHOL that is prohibitted due to it's bad influence on mind... try drinking that methyl alcohol used in such stuff:D and u will know what i am talking about...
it's okay to use them:)

i'm sorry ....it wasn't meant to be rude......i realised it at the end of typing n was lazy enough to rewrite....:)
i never ever say "its true because I say so".....i just didn't care to back it with reference......just like everyone is coming up with his own opinions........n i am going to tell you the source but still i want to make it very clear.....if u don't agree i'm not the person dying to convince anyone .......this is just what i do in order to be careful......
right now ....i'm running short of time .......i'm just coming back in 4 hrs time(may be less than that)
so ......until then
see ya later......!!
i am not saying anything ive written/will write is 100% true. just conveying what little info i have. if anythings wrong its from me, anything right is from Allah. forgive me if i make any mistakes.
from what I know, which isn’t much, Surat al nisa ayah 43 is what prohibits alcohol as it is an intoxicant. In this ayah, the state of ceremonial impurity is a different condition than that of having an unclear mind.
the hadith mention Alcohol being made by fermenting either raisins, dates (unripe and ripe), honey, barley and wheat. There are a lot of hadiths that say this, one of which is sahih bukhari v7 b6 n494. vinegar which uses oxygen in the fermenting process is fine because the consumption of ethyl alcohol is what causes this intoxication and this is made in the absence of oxygen (right?).
the interpretation/explanation of hadith i have read, use the word impure with reference to alcohol which has been drunk. I’ve been looking for them - sorry i cant seem to find the exact readings in a form i can refer you to. The description of it being “impure” i’m not sure is divine, from the prophet (saw), the older scholars, or if it is just used to mean the state of intoxication is an impure state (which i dont think there is any debate on). all i know is that on what ever level its used, its not used to mean nijis. allahu alim - again im not claiming to know much and you might the read my references differently than i have.
:halo:
so here is the source
as for saying it ‘impure’…i think its the way used by schollars to describe it ‘najas’…though i’m not sure about it…!!!
najas is different than impure.
interesting source, if you go to www.islamicity.com they offer a different opinion.

Alcohol: Physical use of
Question:
Some of the substances which a woman uses as part of her makeup, such as perfume, hair spray, anti-deodorants and facial and body powder may contain alcohol. What should she do, if she wants to offer her prayer?
Answer:
What seems to be the point at issue in the first part of your question is the fact that alcohol may be an ingredient of the substances used. It is well know that intoxicants, all of which are alcoholic drinks, are described as impure. The question is whether such impurity is imparted to other substances in which alcohol is an ingredient. To answer, I would like to point out that the weightier opinion is that the impurity of alcohol is not physical. In other words, if alcohol is dropped on someone’s clothes and then it dries up, the person concerned need not wash his clothes to remove the impurity. He may use them in prayer without having to wash them first. Hence, if a man or a woman uses perfume or after-shave or anti-deodorant spray or any similar substance which includes alcohol, they need not worry about offering their prayer in the normal way just on account of having used such substances.

well....3arabeeya......as i said earlier i'm not here to convince anyone coz i know its not possible.....evrybody has his own point of view which may have a solid base or may be just a baseless view.....so for me its alrite for you to hold a different opinion........:)
but for myself i feel it alot better to stick to this view as for me its safe .......!!!
:)
yup, im with u 100%. Its good to share different opinions. I meant it when i said it was interesting. Im not out to change anyones opinion either; i claim no real knowledge of this as i havent been extensively schooled in figh/sharia etc.
Have a lovely night Afia - salaams!

Ums, alcohol is used because there are many chemicals, principally of organic origin, that will not dissolve in water. When these chemicals are used in perfumes, aftershaves and mouthwashes, alcohol must be added or else the chemicals will sit as a solid lump at the bottom of the container.
The next safest chemical that they will dissolve in is ethanol, the alcohol that is reponsible for the intoxicating effect of certain drinks.
