Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
Not an expert on this topic. But this is far too complex to be blamed on the Modi government, IMO.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
I agree with you on this. Only future actions of Modi government on this issue will clarify the perception, but unfortunately this issue has again affected minorities of India.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the majority of victims in the “barbaric” attacks that took place last evening were women and children and steps were being taken to ensure that the situation does not escalate. The Centre said it was rushing in 5000 paramilitary personnel at the request of Assam government.
IGP (Law and Order) S N Singh told PTI that the death toll had risen to 62 with 37 deaths in Sonitpur and 25 in Kokrajhar after heavily armed militants belonging to the Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) swooped down on the four remote Adivasi villages of the two districts and killed the inhabitants last evening.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
I agree that it may have nothing to do with Modi. it’d hv happened either way. And the blame would go on both sides.

****GUWAHATI: India deployed military helicopters to hunt down tribal militants in the northeastern state of Assam on Thursday after rebels killed 75 people this week, the deadliest in the remote area in years.
Assam has a history of sectarian bloodshed and armed groups fighting for secession from India.
On Tuesday, suspected militants of a faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland attacked four villages in the space of an hour, pulling people out of their homes and shooting them dead.
More than half of the victims were women and children of tea plantation workers from outside the state, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said as more bodies were discovered in the remote area.
The attacks appeared to have been in retaliation for an offensive that security forces launched against the Bodo faction a month ago that inflicted heavy losses.
The militant group lost 40 men and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, state police said.
The rebels turned on plantation workers, believing that some were informing the police about their movements. “This is an act of terrorism. We are going to be very tough,” federal Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who flew to the state, told reporters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government took power in May promising economic development and a tough stance on national security.
“We have said there will be zero tolerance for terrorism,” Singh said.
India’s northeast region, bounded by China, Myanmar, Bhutan and Bangladesh, is home to more than 200 ethnic groups.
The region has trailed the rest of India in economic development and the gap has widened in recent years, fuelling discontent.
For decades, the Bodos have been fighting for a state of their own called Bodoland, accusing New Delhi of plundering their state’s resources and flooding the area with outsiders.
The group follows a distinctive culture and speaks a Tibeto-Burman language.
A military official said helicopters were scouring the jungles of Assam to track down militants trying to flee to Bhutan and the neighbouring Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which has thickly forested mountains.
About 5,000 additional soldiers have been deployed to Assam in response to this week’s attacks, the government said.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
The bodos themselves are Christian/tribal faith minorities who are killing people who are Christian, Muslim, Hindus. They have attacked Bangladeshi migrants as well. They are unhappy at the state using these resources to accommodate outsiders.

sounds like India's Balochistan.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
Where-ever there is lack of education and government facilities to help citizens..you see a rebellion. My heart goes out to innocent people who are killed.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!

Probably. I don't know much about balochistan and I'm only just reading about Assam. Apparently there are only about 1500 or around that number of rebels.
So government should be be competent enough to resolve their issues. The issue here I think is about fight for resources.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
Not only in Assam. Whole India's North East is effected by rebellion. That is another story, when India lives in denial but the problem is there.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
Out of the 65 people who died 12 were children and infants killed at gunpoint. Many were also women. I don't know why these types of
groups attack the most innocent in response to gov
response. It is being reported in international papers
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
The grievances of the people in the area should be answered which includes giving resources to non natives. Living in denial doesn't help it only leads to such tragedies which build up.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
Generally speaking..anyone who kills innocent women, children and even men..shouldn't have no sympathy. I don't care what the problem is..you don't attack non-combatants. Anyway, i hope..and confident that your Govt. is able to crack down on them.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
Thanks. I hope so. It's been pointed out this is not just ethnic violence it is terrorism. Recent statistics is that Out of the 80 people killed 20 were children and 20 women. It's an unfair fight to attack innocents and non-combatants with bows and arrows when other side has guns.
Unfortunately it seems in our region people are more reactive than proactive. Only after a big incident happens do people wake up. I am sure there have been past events have occurred where smaller events have occurred and smaller numbers of died . In the west every life is valued.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
I know dude.
I am reading arundhati roy + watching her lectures.
Its very depressing what is going on.
Re: After Gujarat its turn for Assam!
not much to do with the bjp/rss, although they are trying hard to gain a foothold in the north east. its been bodo terrorists killing settlers every few years. usually its the bihari laborers in tea plantations, sometimes its the bengali muslim workers. the bodo separatists arent getting anywhere because the bodo tribes are distributed over lots of areas and arent localized, and most dont favor separation.

i'm sure you appreciate arundhati roy's candid writings. but i can bet a 100 dollars you detest asma jahangir, ayesha siddiqa, malala etc. who are pretty much the same honest narrators on society's problems.
