Kaleem sounds like you prefer if the lot was just left to die in New Orleans. I have family in Texas who also have gone to the shelters and their account of the situation wasn't a cold and bitter one like yours. An IM from family I recieved 3 hours ago, "People are depressed and just walking around with nothing to do, but most are very appreciative of what has been provided."
UTD, I am not asking for these people to die. I am asking for a bit of decency for God's sake, is it too much to ask. The first thing they do after getting a hot emal, shower and some money is ..........b-line to a liquor store or a bar...they sit and drink all day.......crime rate around the astrodome has already gone up....Texans have asked the police to provide "security" to their fans for the Sept 18th game at Reliant Stadium".
I am telling you what no one in media will tell you. There are a lot of them who are nothing but bad news...the media /PC story regarding Astrodome (reducing the number from 22,000 to 6,000) was FireMarshall said so....really a stadium that could house 65,000 peoplr for a sporting event cannot house 20,000 folks now....the point is that you are not getting the actual picture from the media
LI, if being naive means that I do not believe that humans act like animals, then I prefer to be naive. If it means that I do not believe that hurting the community that has gone out of its way to help you then I prefer to be naive. If it means that I can call them what they are “thugs” and petty criminals then I prefer that. You can live in your so called “compassionate” world of liberalisim…no thankyou
LI, I would have been racist if I did not go down to help these people, however, I am arealist unlike you, I dont hide from the truth. I say it as I see it, I dont give a damn if its politically correct or not. You can hide behind the PC crap all day long ....
BTW: The plight of these people began with Democrats who want to keep them dependant on the Govt for their voting block.
^ let's say in bizarroworld aka conservative land, your last statement is true kaleem. democrats took them for granted. What prevented the republicans, especially the bible thumping nutcases in the south, to do something about them? you cannot have it both ways, you cannot cut social programs that help the bottom dwellers of society and then complain when crime resulting from a lack of opporutnities comes an dbites you in the ass. No one is pre-disposed to crime, it is a result of social and economic distinction. None of which seem to matter to the conservative right.
I knew someone will go to this liberal rag to make their point....Is the newspaper covered under media.....I thought so? UTD, you want to know the truth....come down and talk to the police officers who are working in this area...dont go by the liberal rag chronicle for your news.
PD, of course it is socail and economic distinction, but I ask you what has the dems done to help these people other than making them dependent upon govt run welfare programs. They need to stop the spoonfeeding and cut them loose. The only way people grow and better themselves is by experience and doing things on their own. I truly believe that each and everyone of these folks has a potential to be a productive citizen, however, they must remove these chains of victim mentality and move on.
^ Even as a republican, i will say that a growing middle class of african americans, the social welfare programs that have been put into place since LBJ, the affirmative action policies, etc etc...all are basic hallmarks of gov't's addressing the issues around race and proverty. To think otherwise is to live in lala land. And most of the champions of these programs tend to be democrats and republicans like me.
The welfare reform act signed by Clinton and Democrats pushing to make college more affordable to those with lower incomes really have tied down the poor.
I am sorry to hear that you believe in Affirnmative action...so you believe that minorities are not capable of performing at the same level as whites and must be coddled and handheld and given positions that they are otherwise not qualified for.....like I said, I am sorry that you believe in such racist agendas.
UTD, there was a time that affirmative action was needed....its no longer needed and its actually hurting american economy overall....its time to ban these so called "do good" programs and let people grow...
if the playing field is level then yes affirmative action is wrong. Trust me, affirmative action also keeps Stanford and Michigan from being over run by Indian and chinese. It makes sure halfwit whiteboys can go to a good school too.
Kaleem, I run a NGO that deals with education in NYC. If the inner city schools of NYC got as many resources from primary school on as suburban ones do, then you will have a point. If implicit racism still didn;t run in American society, you would have a point. (It needs to be noted that because of affirmative action programs and gov’t regluations barring discrimination based on race we have seen a dramatic rise in african american in the corporate world). It has been only two generations, which is only .5 generation in the south, to have these changes take place in America.
The good news is there is tremendous momentum, the bad news is the thinking that enough has been done. It took Japan 50 years to come out of it’s post-war economic morass and that was a homogenous society. We are dealing with 250 yrs of insitutionalized racism and more so a legacy of slavery where familial institutions wihtin the back community were destroyed due to commerical reasons. Give it time. In a couple of decades, being poor in America wouln’t mean you are disadvantaged because of your race. We have made great stides in a short amount of time.
