KARACHI: A perfect storm is brewing in Pakistan cricket as Shahid Afridi and Waqar Younis are on a collision course after developing serious differences during the recently-concluded One-day International series against the West Indies.

Afridi, Pakistan’s limited-overs captain, is so extremely displeased with the way the team’s coach is running the team’s affairs that he is planning to meet Ijaz Butt, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, to inform him about his grievances against Waqar.

Sources close to Afridi revealed that the allrounder is ‘considering his options’ and will take a final decision after meeting with Butt in Lahore sometime next week.

Afridi is returning home from the Caribbean on Sunday (today).

Waqar, Pakistan’s coach, wants to be the one calling all the shots and that has really irked Afridi, said a source.

The former Test pacer, according to the sources, is also at loggerheads with Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector. Mohsin has been hinting that Waqar overrules the squads picked by the national selection committee.

Mohsin even threatened to resign after his recommendations were overruled by the PCB while announcing Pakistan’s 15-man Test squad for this month’s series against the West Indies.

In the Caribbean last week, Afridi’s relations with Waqar almost reached breaking point when the coach insisted that he will pick the playing elevens. Afridi mulled over the option of missing the last two One-day Internationals but was later convinced by other team officials to carry on.

“Once he is back home, Afridi will seek a meeting with Ijaz Butt and inform him about the problems he is having with the coach,” said a source.

Also, with Butts tenure now coming to an end by October (most likely that his contract will not be renewed) Afridi's days as captain and in the team are numbered any way...
If someone like Arif Abbasi comes back as PCB chairman, then Afridi will be axed for sure.

With that said, I wonder who can really be the ODI captain besides Misbah? Can they appt Hafeez as captain? He is an opener and these days also in good form..

The coach should not interfere in selection matters ..........After all he wont be playing on the field

On the contrary i think coach should have a say in the team matters such as selection. waqar was not born yesterday and he is coach for a reason. he has so much experience and expertise behind him
may be PCB should do more to have good relations between the entire team which includes the support staff.

BTW coach waqar is a member of on tour selection committee. he is just doing his job.

Yeah may be but coach should just focus on the fitness of players rather than in selecting players

I agree that the coach is more helpful in "strategy, pitch advice" however the final 11 should be the captains call.
In the case of Afridi, PCB may have told Waqar to help him form the 11. So lets see if it is only Afridi who will meet PCB or will it be Viky as well and will they both have a p/conf. afterwards or not....

pa jee, feir mochi gate da koi pehlwan hire kar lo as a coach..waqar kee kaya zarorrat ha....we all know how dumb, irrational and idiot afridi has been....he has absolutely no strategic mindset...I have serious problems with afridi's IQ as well as EQ (emotional) and i think he is mentally unfit to do the job.......somehow I am willing to put my weight behind hafeez…

I feel bad for younis as I think he is going to come second in this feud and possibly lose his job as afridi is far tooo good at back stabbing, manipulation, political games than waqar. He has architected too many of these moves over last half decade and he is the cancer of Pak cricket.

If misbah doesnt make the same complaint then i guess afridi's case gets weak automatically. Looks like PCB isnt too happy with afridi either.
