I just came across this, remember it from my reading days; she was on the cover of National Geographic waaaaaaay back when in the early eighties, very mesmerizing stare!

appkiamaanat, you hit it right on the head. This picture came out during the soviet insurgence into Afghanistan due to which so many people’s lives were wasted…there was this one uncle who had eight brothers in Kabul who were gathered up and never seen again…small part in such a sad story
I actually thought it was her making that comment.

I dont think she is scared, her eyes says something else. This picture was taken in a camp in Pakistan NWFP. I forgot the site add, it had an entire article and a movie on this girl from the photographer that took this pic. They said that they were refusing to publish this picture because it was tooo haunting.

That picture is amazing its not so much that her eyes are sad, its that her gaze is clear and it seems as if she’s able to see all thats inside of you…

besides that her features are killer…
Nobody know where she is now, even the person who took the photo tried to find her but!!!!! she might be dead by now, like many other inocent beautiful afghan children, daying everyday in Peshawer jalozai camp of heat and shortage of food.

I read in a national geographic mag after that pic was published that so many people wrote in about her. A lot of people wanted to find out who she was and if they could adopt her. Quite interesting..

He was having a very different time photographing women: once they reach puberty,they have to keep their face covered,and essentially they’re off-bounds as a subject. So in the course of visting a refugee camp he went into a school tent and asked the teacher if he could photograph some oy her pupils.This girl was one of them.she was 12 at that time.She and her family had spent two weeks walking through the mountains to escape Russians.She had never really left her village before this walk to Pakistan,and she had never seen a foreigner. People have asked Steve McCurry, “Are thoes her real eyes?” He says it was one of thoes moments where all the elements just come together the colour of the tent matching her shirt,the wonderful natural light,and her extraordinary expression. *
