I think that this explains a lot about why the Taliban don’t like women.

As if U.S. troops and diplomats didn’t have enough to worry about in trying to understand Afghan culture, a new report suggests an entire region in the country is coping with a sexual identity crisis.

An unclassified study from a military research unit in southern Afghanistan details how homosexual behavior is unusually common among men in the large ethnic group known as Pashtuns –– though they seem to be in complete denial about it.

The study, obtained by Fox News, explains that Pashtun men commonly have sex with other men, admire other men physically, have sexual relationships with boys and shun women both socially and sexually, yet completely reject the label of “homosexual.” The research was conducted as part of a longstanding effort to better understand Afghan culture and improve Western interaction with the local people.

But the research unit, which was attached to a Marine battalion in southern Afghanistan, acknowledged that the behavior of some Afghan men has left Western forces “frequently confused.”

Case in point, the report details the bizarre interactions a U.S. Army medic and her colleagues had with Afghan men in the southern province of Kandahar.

In one instance, a group of local male interpreters had contracted gonorrhea anally but refused to believe they could have contracted it sexually –– “because they were not homosexuals.”

Apparently, Pashtun men interpret the Islamic prohibition on homosexuality to mean they cannot “love” another man, according to the report. But that doesn’t mean they can’t use men for “sexual gratification.”

The group of interpreters who had contracted gonorrhea joked in the camp that they actually got the disease by “mixing green and black tea.” But since they refused to heed the medics’ warnings, many of them re-contracted the disease after receiving treatment.

The U.S. army medic also told members of the research unit that she and her colleagues had to explain to a local man how to get his wife pregnant.

The report said: “When it was explained to him what was necessary, he reacted with disgust and asked, ‘How could one feel desire to be with a woman, who God has made unclean, when one could be with a man, who is clean? Surely this must be wrong.’”

The Pashtun populations are concentrated in the southern and eastern parts of the country. The Human Terrain Team that conducted the research is part of a military effort to learn more about local populations.

The report also detailed a disturbing practice in which older “men of status” keep young boys on hand for sexual relationships. One of the country’s favorite sayings, the report said, is “women are for children, boys are for pleasure.”

The report concluded that the widespread homosexual behavior stems from several factors, including the “severe segregation” of women in the society and the “prohibitive” cost of marriage.

Though U.S. troops are commonly taught in training for Afghanistan that the “effeminate characteristics” of Pashtun men are “normal” and not an indicator of homosexuality, the report said U.S. forces should not “dismiss” the unique version of homosexuality that is actually practiced in the region “out of desire to avoid western discomfort.” Otherwise, the report said, that could “risk failing to comprehend an essential social force underlying Pashtun culture.”

Re: Afghan Men Struggle With Sexual Identity, Study Finds

its not pashtuns, it has been said to be happening in the northern western areas of afghanistan. if it was practiced by pashtuns, it would not be limited to afganistan!

farce news network. enough said.

Re: Afghan Men Struggle With Sexual Identity, Study Finds

They wasted money on this subject matter as a ****ing study?

Homosexual behaviour is very common in US Army, Navy, Air Force. Whenever men are separated from their wives they engage in m4m sexual behaviour. Even with the "Dont ask dont tell" policy , same sex relationship is very common among US army/navy etc. Even among Jail inmates there is lot of sexual activity between men. Most of these men would label them as "Bisexual" as once they are back home, they are mostly hetero.

Re: Afghan Men Struggle With Sexual Identity, Study Finds

I think the Americans misunderstand a lot of things? Why do they have to interfere in everything? What is with al this labelling? Why does sexuality have to be used as an identity? I do not use my sexuality as my identity.

It is America that is having the labelling crisis!

Its not just Faux news that tells lies. Every single media outlet twists the truth, tells outright lies.

As for the Taliban, if I remember correctly did nt they punish homosexuals?

Re: Afghan Men Struggle With Sexual Identity, Study Finds

Usually it is very hard for a person to be openly "Homosexual". What happens is many men who appear perfectly straight are in fact in "Closet". These guys are Married guys
who have sexual relationship with men and women more "Bisexual " Types.

Re: Afghan Men Struggle With Sexual Identity, Study Finds

This is an incredibly idiotic article not based on facts or sound scholarship.

Re: Afghan Men Struggle With Sexual Identity, Study Finds

^ Just curious - do you have Afghan ancestry, pak-one ?

Re: Afghan Men Struggle With Sexual Identity, Study Finds

Pathans being gay.

Is the Pope a Catholic.

Yes, I do.

Even if I didn’t, this article is the equivalent of saying “Why Americans are so fat and stupid?”

I don’t want to comment on the stupid part … but yes they are fat and there have been studies for that … a glimpse … Americans see fat as normal as weights rise: study | Reuters

Come on now, you take some story based on pseudo-science and consider it accurate?

This is off topic, but the overall US rate is highly skewed by regional imbalances, furthermore who cares about perception of what is normal? There are countless more issues with the articles but I don’t want to shift this thread.

Now I am not here denying that there are no homos in Afghanistan, but these crappy articles make it seem like its the norm.

I seriously doubt the studies of US researchers, every religion on earth condemns and bans homosexuality, and we all know how fundamentalist and radicalized Taliban is, they will not allow this to happen, Muslims register highest growth rate in terms of population, so if Pashtuns, have sexual intercourses with women and men, then they will be intercoursing all the day, but they stand and fight US
I doubt US has skewed the study in her own favour

Actually, homosexuality is pretty common among the Pashtuns. Can't speak about the Tajiks, Uzbeks and Hazara, but among the Pashtuns, its a pretty common part of the culture. If you read studies by anthropologists in the 60s, you will find extensive evidence of it.

Show me some unbiased sources then?

Homosexuality exists everywhere but to say that the rate is higher amongst Pakhtuns is totally false. What's your agenda? Got smacked down by an Afghan?

waiting for your reply

Really? * **Every* religion?!? Is it safe to assume that you've studied them all, then?

My father is a Sikh and my mom is a Christian, so I read both guru granth sahib and bible, in Islamic pronunciation Moses becomes moosa, Abraham becomes abraam, noah becomes nooh, this inclines me to conceive that old testament and first part of kuran might be more or less same, gita never talked about homosexuality though mahabharath tells about sexual life but not anything about homosexuality., but as you have inspired me, dear ROXX, I will study kuran, I promise I would try to study it in a month’s time. All my life I lived in IAF residential areas where they don’t talk about religion much, but now I live in delhi. Meanwhile if you are a muslim then please do answer me.
What islam says about homosexuality?
Or pashtuns have misunderstood it?

Waiting for your reply
