Advice on moving to London?

I want some input on this from guppies living in London.

Would you advise anybody to move down to London for a job that pays around £25,000 PA? Would one be able to survive on this pay (taking into account mortgage payments/rent, bills, council tax, travel etc ).

What about property wise can a decent sized property (2-3 bedrooms) be bought on this salary? What areas of London would you advise someone to move to?

Re: Advice on moving to London?

Dont do it man. The pay is too low.

Re: Advice on moving to London?

areas of london…well the best place i’ve seen to live in is bexleyheath…but housing is quite expensive…also south east :jhanda:

not that i live anywhere near there ofcourse :halo:

Re: Advice on moving to London?

You'd have to live in shared accomodation. Whitechapel area is safe and not too bad.

Re: Advice on moving to London?

If you are a bachelor, you will be very happy with 25000, I left when I was gettting 28000.
PS: my personal experience in living in UK, You will always remain a "curry eating Paki" even if you have blue eyes, fair skin and brown hair.

Re: Advice on moving to London?

Thanks guys. I think i'm better off up north. Although I do really like the multi-cultural communities and lifestyle of London.

What are the property prices like on the outskirts of London? Is it a hassle to commute every day?

Re: Advice on moving to London?

Pay is too low. My own daughter lives there but she makes about 65k pounds and still wants to leave London next year to come back to Canada.

Re: Advice on moving to London?

Don't go to the North.

Re: Advice on moving to London?

25K in London isn't much, and I can't think of anywhere that I would want to live that you could get a 2-3 bedroom at that salary. It's been many years since we lived there, though. Maybe housing prices have dropped a little. Do you have any friends that you could perhaps share a flat with? If so, then you guys could probably afford to stay in a little better area. We lived in Wimbledon and Hounslow, but the commute was longer. If you don't mind a longer commute you can always move up to Luton - loads of desis there and housing was cheap - we didn't like it, though. The cost of a travelcard may not make it worth your while anymore.

Do you live in the US or Canada now? If so, figure that you will pay about double the cost of what you currently spend on food, and at least triple and possibly quadruple your vehicle expenses, especially gas. Electronics, clothing, basically everthing is more expensive there, and taxes are also much higher.

Re: Advice on moving to London?

you got to be kidding! average house price in London now is £330K and theer is no way that you can buy that in this salary. even a studio flat in a decent area is above £200k range (well you can find one bedroom flat in some really nasty areas within 200K mark)

You will take home around £1500/m after tax and NI contribution... if you have a mortgage , lets say about 180K, then only the interest payment would be about £1000 (a rough figure of course coz it depends on what rate you are offered by your lender) now you do the maths that how you will travel, pay bills, EAT and pay council tax with £500 in ur hands.

Re: Advice on moving to London?

coolmunda,

first tell me what kinda job would u be doing? Everyone is is complaining here £25,000 is too low, may be it is but London's average pay is still £22655. If you are married I wont recommend taking any job less than £30,000. If you are single even £20,000 will make you somehow survive.

Average three bedroom tarraced house in reasonable area (out of Greater London) e.g. Zone 4 (UG) you should be looking around 200,000 to 275,000 (NW Area), SE is cheap but I wont recommend as desi. East London is cheaper but dirty. If you want to purchase then check the area well before u invest. Good luck.

Re: Advice on moving to London?

unless both are working and making more than 40K combined.

dude what part of SE is cheap, checked housing prices in Dulwich Village recently? thats SE22
