advice needed

Re: advice needed

Well I think any full time job can be hectic.

Re: advice needed

if its your own restaurant, you probably can save a lot of time and effort by just hiring a qualified and experienced chef and seeing how he runs operations for 6 months. fire his competent behind after that and you can take over.

but as TLK says, what is your career plan? what is the end goal to all the time and effort you and those that rely on you give up on in pursuing an education? don't you want to have a plan to succeed?

Re: advice needed

Exactly! You have to have that passion for cooking and food to do good in this business.
Hareem didn’t you say in one of HH thread that you don’t like cooking.

Re: advice needed

One of the plans is to open up my own cookery school or even run workshops.

Re: advice needed

I don't think so. This is on a different level.

Re: advice needed

I say load of things when in a bad mood. But cooking turns me on, specially if I'm cooking for guests. If I'm getting praises or money I won't be finding it boring. Cooking is like an anti depressant for me.

Re: advice needed

I dunno, I think people who are really passionate about cooking love cooking everyday no matter what. They make that everyday chore into something they really get into so it's never boring to them.

Re: advice needed

It's equally rewarding too, no?

Re: advice needed

hareem ever tried going on come dine with me ? :hehe:

on a serious note, it all depends on what you really want to do..and what you are passionate about. In the long run, it also matters the time you’d have to give and the struggle to complete what you are choosing to do.

Re: advice needed

I don't agree. Even Martha Stewart don't like cooking everyday.

Re: advice needed

I'm sure it is. My point was that that particular route is incredibly demanding to the point where you don't have time for yourself or relationships.

Re: advice needed

She's not a chef.

Re: advice needed

Alright I get it...It's hard. But then what should I do that can help me choose a profession in future? I don't plan to work full time at least for another 10 years but I need to achieve something and to have some sort of social activities going.

Re: advice needed

Tell you something, instead of writing on GS, start a blog. Write about your cooking, Post pictures, recipes, experiments. Be regular with it and do follow other bloggers, make an online network. Blogging is huge and many bloggers get recognized for their skills and work. Their names get out there and they get endorsements. If you are good and your blog get enough traffic you will get advertising and you will start making money off of it too. Again not easy but you are on GS regularly and its not getting you anywhere. So why not try serious blogging about food.

Of course you can do whatever you like to. Go to culinary school and acquire skills. We were just having a chat about realistic expectations and not trying to discourage you or anything.

Re: advice needed

Then what are you waiting for! :)

That is a valid concern and I'd try to find my way around that if I were you.

I have seen chefs in the city though that are doing very very well...even have their own cooking studios with no professional training whatsoever.

Its a matter of passion and how much you are willing to put into it.

Re: advice needed

I feel really bad after reading this.

Re: advice needed

If I wanted a job and they ask me about my qualifications and what do I do? Give them a link to my blog? LOL thanks for letting me know about the real expectations.

Re: advice needed

^hareem that's what it is about: you were doing a degree in psychology didn't you. Now you think you could be a chef. As far as I know doing a diploma in that would help you even at home for that matter. While you won't initially be a first class chef, am sure you can try opting for a cookery show on any of the Pakistani channels as starters..they really do pay you well.

meanwhile, yes you could start a blog about food...the similar way you work on your homeschooling blog. And on a plus side, it could definitely play a role in the business you and your husband might be planning on. I think the opportunities are endless.

meanwhile, if you finish your degree in psychology would you be going for Applied psychology? Do you have a job in mind when you think of doing that?

Re: advice needed

no one should be able to tell you what YOUR dreams are.

Re: advice needed

You should do what makes you happy! If going to culinary school will bring you happiness, do it!
I do agree with Bebo though. You should open up a blog and blog about your experiences and recipes. If your blog becomes "famous" in the blogging world you can make a lot of money off of it :)
