Should I go back to college and complete my degree in Psychology or should I become a professional chef?

Re: advice needed

How good is your cooking? No your hubby eating your food doesn't count.

Re: advice needed

Complete your degree unless you are passionate about cooking and food.

Re: advice needed

make your hobby your profession

Re: advice needed

Which career has more rewards for you, i’m not just talking about the money… capitalist scum always think about the money… but also the practicality.

Pyschology is good key to unlock a lot of doors to other careers, its competitive but theres a lot of niche markets, criminal side of it is very good not only is the job well paid but the element of risk is something exciting hmmm

Meanwhile the most excitement in a chef job would be blowing up the kitchen… although again it can be well paid, the competition is much more fierce. There are again niche markets like Sushi specialists and so on…

however on balance I would say pyschology degree becuase it unlocks more pathways and you can go on to do just about anything with it… whereas not so much comes from chef work… unless your Steven Seagal and you find yourself on a ship at sea. :hehe:

Re: advice needed

What is that you are planing to do after completing your degree?

Re: advice needed

complete your degree :-)

Re: advice needed

I can cook all Punjabi food but obviously I have to get a diploma in culinary arts and cordon bleu to call myself a professional cheff.

Cookery school is much cheaper than the psychology degree and with becoming a chef I'll have a lot of future opportunities like running my own business.

Re: advice needed

I have no idea. :hehe:

Re: advice needed

I think you answered your own question.

Re: advice needed

I just don't wanna handle haram meat specially pork.

Re: advice needed

There got to be Vegetarian/Vegan culinary schools in your area

Re: advice needed

Restaurant business is very tough and rough. You need to have a thick skin to survive the pressure in a professional kitchen. You don’t become chef of a resturant just because you have a diploma. Most likely you will start as kitchen help doing cleaning and may be prepping with minimum wage. It can take many years to get a chef or even sous chef job in a good restaurant.

Re: advice needed

They have some courses for vegetarians but that does not meet my needs...I want to be able to master everything. I'll see if they can allow me to bring my own halal meat in the class.

Re: advice needed

^ Can she start a catering business bebo? I know that wont be easy either but still better chances.

Re: advice needed

part of the course is to work in a professional kitchen for 3 years but thats optional.

Re: advice needed

Yeh.. one of my classmates from school got really into cooking and I mean really. She was always cooking, blogging and going on short courses. She then gave up her successful career to pursue becoming a chef. She went from a well paid job to doing as bebo said - cleaning and prepping to begin with. It sounded incredibly difficult, working very long hours and her relationship suffered. She's getting their now though but after a lot of pain.

Re: advice needed

Hareem, dont mind me asking, but you have 3 kids mashallah, and culinary profession requires odd and long hours. How are you planning to balance your family life with what might come your way as a chef>

Re: advice needed

I don't have to get a job after finishing the diploma...I can help my husband set up our own business or get a part time job...once kids are in college I can go full time. Point is I'll have a skill for life.

Re: advice needed

I was talking more in terms of starting a career in restaurant business. If having a career is not the goal then do what excites you more.
TLK, for catering business, she does not need culinary diploma, in that case It will be in her best interest to get a business degree instead.
