No one said you have to go to Africa:) You know what..it doesn't even have to be 'poor, homeless' people. One can always help family members and friends too.:)(and no I am not saying financially).
Contentment with one's lot in life is a very positive trait, and goes a long way. If one is grateful for everything in life that they have, and don't fret about what they don't have or cannot have, then life becomes easier. But if you find solace in grouchiness, so be it:D
