Hijaab is mandatory whereas an abaya is not, loose clothing can take place of wearing an abaya. But yeah as Deeba said hopefully the way one is looked at is more out of curiosity than out of lust.

in major cities like chicago, ny, la, dallas, austin, detroit etc, ppl wont even look at u twice if ur wearing an abaya...id say go for it n dont worry abt it : )
Well Hareem baji it is not much about PCG but in general I was thinking. Even someone made fun of me yesterday just because I told him I wore an abaya and wanted to come to USA to study for masters. I dont know I just felt weird.

I wear jacket over an abaya here in Dubai, will do the same thing wherever I go. Appauling.

I don't know anyone who has had issues with abayas in the US. HOWEVER, I know multiple women who stopped wearing them after a while once they were here (older and younger women). They said they didn't feel the same need to wear it as they did in the Middle East. I guess the feeling is that if you do not look immodest and are not drawing attention to yourself, you may feel comfortable without the abaya. Going out without the abaya in the ME draws more attention; no one gives a second glance here.
Most women I know have kept the hijab. Many have started it AFTER coming to the US.

^exactly..i dont wear it in the US because i have never experienced the in-your-face-ogling or anything of such sort here..but when in pakistan i wear a chador..i feel comfortable just dressed modestly....but in Pak you have to make an extra effort to be fully covered and all.

However according to many people here and their interpretation of what is allowed and what is not, abaya is not even mandatory only hijab is so does it matter?

Well right now my plan is to go to Chicago. If I do not find americans and in general american guppies rude. Plan got change I might end up in UK.
