so what’s the dealio? i am getting the vibes that you cannot do much stuff if u wear an abaya in USA? Is that true?
Re: Abayas and USA
Don't ever believe what pcg has to say about things that has anything to do with muslims. my humble advice.
Re: Abayas and USA
nope!!
Move to Canada ![]()
U will love it here.
Re: Abayas and USA
Well Hareem baji it is not much about PCG but in general I was thinking. Even someone made fun of me yesterday just because I told him I wore an abaya and wanted to come to USA to study for masters. I dont know I just felt weird.
Monk what makes you say that, I need some stories some hope that it is not true.
And before funguy comes and says I am being judgemental or something, these are just vibes and I need someone to prove them wrong and tell me what right is.
Monk I can never move to Canada or Australia.
Re: Abayas and USA
Well you should ask someone studying in West who's in favour of hijab, only she'll be able to tell you the truth but as far as I've seen abaya is not a problem for muslim students in UK or even in USA.
Re: Abayas and USA
Like I said in your other thread Aisha... it depends on the state you're going to.
I live in Virginia and its not a problem here.... you will see people in shalwar kameez, saris, abayas, hijab, even full burqas (with naqab) here.
Re: Abayas and USA
Unless your studying in a southern uni where there is no multiculturalism, then you have no problem.
Re: Abayas and USA
i love abayas! wanna me a sweetie and send me some?
Re: Abayas and USA
Aisha, unless you're going to the hick deep south, you'll have no problem wearing an abaya in the US. They're more culturally diverse than what the media makes out. :)
Re: Abayas and USA
I live in small town USA and go to school in an even smaller town! I wear abayas to school, to the grocery store and everywhere i go and Alhamdulillah i have never experienced any bad vibes. This is in the midwest. Also, i dont wear black only, i wear all kinds of colors and styles.
I have also lived in the western part of US in a small town and that experience was totally different. It was an all white town and people looked at you wierd just because you were wearing hijab.
Abaya is not the only way of covering up though. You can also wear long dresses with pants and hijab or skirts etc. There are other ways of covering up too.
Re: Abayas and USA
I have many friends who wear abayas and go to work or school. USA is amazing in terms of equal opportunity and they cannot by law discriminate by race, color, gender or religion. Some place may require special clearance but it is usually granted. Doing namaz in offices/schools is also not a big deal.
Now if you go to the Southern states, you may face some discrimination but it should not affect you.
Re: Abayas and USA
Aba ya USA?
I would say definitely choose Aba jee.
Here in the urban northeast US people won't look twice if you're wearing abaya--no big deal. In general, the northeast corridor (Boston-New York-Philly-DC) and the urban areas of the West Coast are very open and people wear all sorts of different things. The large cities in Texas (Houston, Dallas) as well places with large universities (Austin, TX), are also diverse and abaya is no biggie. Finally, the Detroit area is home to a very large and very good university (University of Michigan) as well as the country's largest Arab population, so you would probably not feel out of place there.
Re: Abayas and USA
And I can tell you abt California, there are so many women who wears abayas, work, go to school , do all kind of stuff, I wear hijab and long coat, not the typical abaya but I work for one of the biggest university hospital in california, never had any problem, so I dont think so that would be a issue.
Re: Abayas and USA
you can't swim in it but other than that you can do anything you put your mind up to whether it be here in US or timbuktu
(I made a rhyme)
Re: Abayas and USA
I wear a hijab and I went to the largest Catholic university in US. I also have a friend who wears an abaya and went to the same school, she's doing dental now. It's not a problem at all, even in the Midwest and South- although it's probably much easier to wear it in Northeast. I would suggest to not wear black all the time though, wear different colors instead.
Re: Abayas and USA
i didnt wear abaya, but in my entire highschool and undergrand life i wore hijab, and i was a fine arts student. it all depends on how modestly you dressing up and which uni you are going to.
Re: Abayas and USA
We have a number of discrinatory incidents. Check with CAIR and their data.

hahahaha funny

I haven't worked the numbers PCG.....but how do they track when you measure the number of reported incidents and then compare to the population?
Is it a really high ratio?
