LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finalized the contract with the new coach Intikhab Alam while this has been decided to appoint former captain Saleem Malik as chief coach of the National Cricket Academy.
The PCB sources told that the cricket board has made a two-year contract with coach Intikhab Alam under which he would be paid an annual salary of six million rupees besides other perks.
Intikhab Alam will get an additional amount of Rs 1,000,000 on winning the final of the ICC event and Rs 500,000 on qualifying for the final.
He will not be allowed to write column for any newspaper or magazine and take part in commentary for electronic media.
Meanwhile, former captain Saleem Malik has been assigned the responsibility of the chief coach of the PCB’s National Cricket Academy. This post was vacated after the appointment of Aaqib Javed as assistant coach of the national cricket team.
“I have been offered the post of head coach at the National Cricket Academy by the board and I have accepted it,” Malik told reporters in Lahore. “For long I have had a great desire to coach youngsters and this is an ideal opportunity to do so.” Malik indicated he might also pursue coaching courses.
Malik appears to have caught the PCB off-guard with the revelation. Ijaz Butt, the chairman with whom he has discussed the post, was not available for comment. A board spokesman, meanwhile, told Cricinfo the deal had not been finalised just yet. An official statement is expected tomorrow.
Malik was banned for life from any involvement in cricket by the PCB in 2000, following the findings of an independent inquiry into the match-fixing scandal that rocked Pakistan cricket at the turn of the millennium.
He had been fighting the ban in local and higher courts since then and the decision to lift his ban was delivered by the Lahore High Court last month.
Though it is a domestic appointment, the decision is likely to interest the ICC, who reports said, had also been wary of the recent appointments of Mushtaq Ahmed and Waqar Younis by the ECB. Mushtaq and Waqar were both fined but not banned in the same inquiry that found Malik guilty. ICC officials were unavailable for comment.
“I hope after the court’s decision of lifting the ban, the ICC will have no objection,” he said, “and, if needed, we can also apply for ICC’s endorsement of the court’s decision.”
Malik replaces Aaqib Javed, the former fast bowler, as head coach. Javed has been appointed assistant coach to Intikhab Alam for the national side and will accompany the team to Abu Dhabi for the three ODIs against the West Indies. Javed coached the Pakistan Under-19 team that won the World Cup in 2004 and has coached several academy sides. He has been touted as a potential coach of Pakistan.
Intikhab Alam will get an additional amount of Rs 1,000,000 on winning the final of the ICC event and Rs 500,000 on qualifying for the final.
Wasn't Geoff Lawson the original stakeholder for that money? Why is it going to Intikhab Alam when his first official assignment will be the Abu Dhabi series?

I think they meant for the next ICC event in 2009.
The ICC has said it will look into the appointment of Saleem Malik, the former Pakistan captain, as head coach of the country’s National Cricket Academy. “We will write to the PCB and ask them to explain after hearing media reports which say that Salim Malik has been given a position of responsibility in the current Pakistan cricket set-up,” an ICC spokesperson told Cricinfo.
So, in light of the presence of evidence to support allegation THREE, this Commission recommends that a life ban be imposed on Salim Malik and he be not allowed to play cricket at any level, whether for Pakistan or at the domestic level. He should not be allowed to even associate himself with any cricketing affairs as he may be able to influence the new generation. This includes coaching, managerial offices and selection committees. It is also recommended that other suitable action whether in the form of criminal proceedings or otherwise be taken against Salim Malik. Moreover, an account of his finances needs to be taken and he should be fined Rs. 10 lac.

Hopefully PCB did their homework on how to counter ICC's objection on Malik's latest appointment. It would be embarrassing if they now take the offer back stating that they didn't know about the recommendation.
Personally I think PCB should have waited a bit more before even thinking about offering him a position.
The man is a lota politician judge, who used to take orders from his masters. He switched sides, and on different occasions has been caught taking orders on phone. He was also one of the croonies who could easily be bought/influenced.

Ban was lifted by a court of law giving clean chit to Malik. Court of law always gets priority over "commissions" so ICC should not have any problem with it.
What you guys are saying makes sense. However does the lifting of the ban mean that he can also hold a position of responsibility? Remember ICC have a problem when players involved in betting are given a position of responsibility eventhough they are ok with them playing cricket.
In Malik's case ICC can argue that his ban to play cricket has been lifted, but that doesn't mean that he should be appointed as the coach at NCA. PCB can also argue that in thier view ban included everything from playing to coaching. It is a technical loophole and could go in anyone's favor.
However I don't want PCB to look stupid infront of everyone by taking this offer back. We all know how PCB likes to make a fool of themselves by doing things and then reverting their decisions. If they have offered the position to Malik they better be able to convince ICC.
^ If ICC insists, shouldn't same apply to Daryl Hair?
aaray hair konsi match fixing may involve tha?? :)
Anyway in his case I think the recommendation was the keep him away from the elite panel for sometime which ICC did. After which he got reinstated but as expected was not offered a new contract.

What is wrong with this picture? Malik poses with thumbs up and indicates that he has been offered a position by PCB. It had to be true or ICC wouldn't have reacted so strongly over it. Rashid Latif resigns so the report of Malik had to be true, there is no otherwise. And now PCB covered all it's tracks and claim that they haven't had the foggiest idea what happened. What illeteracy, is this any way of dealing things?

DB what do you think happened? Most probably Uncle Butt as usual forgot to use his grey matter and offered the position to Malik in his meeting. He didn't realize that there could be strong reactions to this decision. As soon as he found out about ICC's concerns he said to Zakir Khan, "oops, I didn't see that coming. I guess I did it again".
All this is just a cover up now. Personally I think a very stupid decision to begin with and followed by PCB's usual bullcrap. You endorse a life ban on a player for 8 years and what you do as soon as the ban is lifted? You offer him a huge job within a week without realizing what you are doing?
Bascially you are telling the whole world that either you have no integrity and you offered an important position to a person with a dubious background OR you didn't agree with the ban but are so stupid that you didn't let a great player get involved in Pakistan cricket for 8 years.

Usual knee-jerk reaction from PCB, first giving someone a position of higher authority and when big brother says hello, denying all claims that anything ever happened.
A few days ago when ECB decided to 'check' on Mushtaq (when that news broke out), that should have been a hint to not do something like this, at a time when someone like Mushtaq is getting a hard time as potential ECB's bowling coach, given his recent track record at Sussex. Given that, that should have been some kind of a clue to PCB to maybe wait and see, but nothing is off-limits over here.
You can't tell me that Rashid Latif has resigned over something that isn't believed to be 'official'.
So what really happened, did Malik really get the job or not? The thumbs up picture is from the day he got his ban lifted, not the appointment.
are u kidding me man?
rashid is not a whinner he stands by what he belives and Malik did not deserve to be handed the post of cheif coach of NCS, not just because of his alleged (we all know that they were not just allegations)involvement in Match fixing but also the face that what credentials he has as coach??? Mudasar, who he is replacing has been a coach for over 15 years now he was coach of pak on more than one occasions. What coaching experience does malik have, he could never play 100% to his own potential for almost two decaded, i do not consider him good enough to be head of NCA
Malik's appointment was as political as Musharaf's or any other politicians appointments of people who they liked.
