Re: Aap versus tum...
The woman part is actually true. I say that to my female friends. A stern "Woman" to let them know things their place.
Re: Aap versus tum...
I always say aap, regardless of age/relationship. I don't thnik I can remember the last time I used the word tum.
Re: Aap versus tum...
My parents, and mom especially, raised me to say "aap" to everyone....didn't matter if they were older, younger, adult, child, peer. And then sometime down the road...I messed up that habit and started using "tum" more often. Then I remember what my mom said, so I go back and forth between the two, lol. In general let's see...
1) Younger friend/cousin...usually tum. But sometimes I'll revert to aap if they're using it.
2) Child/neice/nephew...usually tum
3) Older friend/cousin.....if they're older by more than a couple of years, it's aap.
4) Spouse....don't have one. I guess i'll just snap my fingers at him .."Hey you...yeah you." It's classy.

Re: Aap versus tum...
With starngers I start with aap , if they make me slightly mad I use tum , then when they make me extremely mad too and the last is a gali.
Same goes with friends aap when we are just acquaintances, tum when we bond a little , too when we bond a little more and a gali is for langotia yaar.
Re: Aap versus tum...
aap to all elders and people i don't know very well,
tum/app to youngsters
tu to extremely close friends and siblings
hubby - tum
i personally love 'tu', it's under rated and seen as rude whereas really if it's used between close people it makes you feel so informal and comfortable...

Re: Aap versus tum...
I think the only time i say aap, is if they are older than me in age, or also when they are strangers or i cant be 'free' with. then its Aap no matter what the age is.
I've seen parents saying aap to their kids, i think its very sweet and will def. do so with my own kids in future i'A
would find it slightly weird to say aap when im angry though lol. not used to it i guess.

I never really thought of it....since I speak mostly english with my cousins here, but in Pak, I guess for all of them I say tum. aap for the elders.

I never understood why that's such a "bad" word.....
Re: Aap versus tum…
with strangers it’s always aap initially
am used to calling hubby aap. And there are times am a little mad at him and I say 'yaar uff kya museebat hai **aap *ko’ ![]()
for friends (guys or girls) it’s tum *
for younger kids and cousins/nephew nieces it’s mostly aap. We have a very strict rule at our place to always talk to little kids using ‘aap’ as that helps them to start saying the same to everybody in general even their own age-mates.
Re: Aap versus tum…
yaar aap kay rules tou buhat strict hain, tsk, kya museebat hai! ![]()
