Aap versus tum...

Re: Aap versus tum…

hehe I know hareem ! Even though hubby never had a problem with aap or tum. It has been stuck since the beginning. Not that I mind :hehe:

But yes for little kids even if I use aap. I don’t go saying ‘xyz, beta aap kya ker rahe hain…kahan ja rahe hain’ It sounds too formal. Am more on the lines of aap ye kero ..aise mess na machao ap.. stuff like that.

Funny but yes that’s the way it has been :hehe:

Re: Aap versus tum…

in urdu speaking culture, we were trained in early age to say **app **to everyone.

and if kids try to tu trakh then :asa:

Re: Aap versus tum...

I use tum for everyone except parents, elders, or strangers.

Re: Aap versus tum…

i use ‘aap’ for everyone, even my little nephews/nieces. unless i’m angry, then it’s tum :grumpy:

Re: Aap versus tum...

For Me:

  1. Friend/cousin older than you (and how much older) **
Friend - Tum, regardless of their age; Older cousin, Aap if I call them bhai/ baji; Tum, if I call them by names :P**

  2. Friend/cousin younger than you **
    TUM TUM :P**

  3. Spouse **
I plan to call my spouse AAP if hopefully he is elder to me. Allah na karay wo mujh se chota ho. I like husbands to be elder than the wives.**

  4. Child/niece/nephew **
    TUM TUM TUM :P

**

Re: Aap versus tum...

I speak punjabi at home. We use tussi for elders. I speak urdu with my nephews and use Aap with them and I loooove when they say Aap to me, it sounds sooo cutish :) Bless them!

Re: Aap versus tum…

  1. Always tum for older friends (they aren’t that much older) and always aap for older cousins
  2. Friend/cousin younger than me get referred to as "tum’ although I dont have friends I speak to in Urdu.
  3. Spouse (fiance in my case): I wish I could say aap but since we started out as friends so it’s awkward making the transition to aap out of the blue. So it’s tum, sometimes aap when I’m making fun of him. “Aap toh jaisay boht hi smart shaks ho, na? :grumpy:
  4. Child/niece/nephew are going to be referred to as aap. I think children should be referred to as aap unless they are insane kism ki batameez kids, in which case tum is more than perfect. :snooty:

Re: Aap versus tum...

I use aap ALWAYS, with everyone! I dunno, I've just never used tum before and I feel strange saying it. I know, I'm a weirdo!

Re: Aap versus tum...

I'm actually a fan of the "oye" followed by a shove of sorts

Re: Aap versus tum...

  1. Friend/cousin older than you (and how much older) - tussi/name (at least 8 years older)
  2. Friend/cousin younger than you- tu/name
  3. Spouse-n/a
  4. Child/niece/nephew- tu/name

Re: Aap versus tum...

either aap or tu - never tum. Aap for elders/strangers. Tu is for friends, brothers, cousins of approximate samme age.

Re: Aap versus tum...

A blanket Aap

That's the way I was raised

Re: Aap versus tum...

.

Re: Aap versus tum...

Always aap. Because it's not about formality/informality or closeness. It's about courtesy and respect, which are always appreciated.

Re: Aap versus tum…

  1. Friend/cousin older than you (and how much older)
app or tum… depends what my sisters use for them … jinhy meri sister app kehti hain main sirf unhy app, bhai aur baji kehti hoon :snooty:

  2. Friend/cousin younger than you
mostly tum… use app for male friends sometimes…

  3. Spouse
I would like to call him app whether he will be younger or elder to me :stuck_out_tongue:

  4. Child/niece/nephew
    mostly tum… sometimes app…
