How are they used ?

Some use aap for ppl elder to us & tum for ppl younger.
Some use aap for both.
Some use tum for both.
Which is grammatically correct ?

aap is used to give respect to elders and also to acquaintances [not close friends]...it's also used as a cultured word even to address younger ones...Lucknow meN sabhii aap janaab se bolte haiN...tum kaa lafz bahot rare hai.

aap ke saath khaaoge is wrong...aap khaayeNge is correct.

aap is used in formal conversations and to give respect
Tum is used commonly in conversations between friends but some kids use tum while speaking with their parents/elders

Grammatically both are correct

when i was in school i used to say aap while talking with my friends then one day my friend took me to a corner and said

Ye tum ny kiya aap aap lagai hy khabardar jo ainda aap kaha :halo:

haN, saHeeH hai par tahzeeb ke 'aalaa me’yaar ke mutaabiq sabhii ko AAP kahnaa chaahiye [baGhair umr kaa liHaaz kiye huye]…TUM kahnaa ma’yoob samjhaa jaataa hai.

bas, tahzeeb kii baat hai...vaise hii jaise maiN kii bajaaye apne liye HAM iste'maal karte haiN...yeh shaahaanah shaan hai...

I use Aap for my elders and Tum for the Youngers one

Ham is plural... so grammatically wrong to use for a single person.

Mostly Urdu speaking people use HUM for even singular use

I use aap for elders & in formal conversations(regardless of age). I use tum for my v close friends and for people younger to me(informal convo).

I thought that was just a trend in North india (Allahabad, Lucknow etc).
But is it grammatically correct ?

Once I asked someone why they used hum instead of mai…I was told…mai mai takabbur ata hai…hum is down to earth…I was like whaaaatttt

you mean its wrong...but considered correct...
So shouldn't we try to motivate people to use the correct form ?
