A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

My question is what was your belief before you chose to become an Agnost or Atheist?

I would like all the atheists or agnosts who participate at Gupshup to state that here. Once I have enough participants I would like to analyze and question what compelled them to leave their former belief be it Islam, Chrisitianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism etc. So the question would then be WHY?

:hmmm:

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

Since everyone is actually born agnostic or atheist, I think that would probably be the largest group - not followers of a specific religion. Just ones that never felt comfortable with any organized religion.

Especially in more secular societies where they may have not been brought up in a family of strong faith or where the whole community belongs to one faith and there is much societal pressure to follow that faith.

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

Semi, that certainly did not answer or contribute to what I am looking for here.

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

I dont think any religion in its pure form exists any more... islam for example, started in Saudi Arabia which by the way has a monarchy.. not supported by islam so rule broken... Christians... homosexuality is not allowed.. actually in no religion that I am aware off.. (i could be wrong in that one)... but lets per say its not in any... is being accepted by large population in Europe and US.. so ppl who claim to be atheist may not exactly be one.. but are on the doorsteps of it.. if these things dont change.. i dont see long before most will be...
btw... Muslim!.....

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

I was agnostic for a while, only becuase it fits my understanding of life. But then I thought, believing in god is harmless and it only gives you a sense of comfort and peace.. So if you can tolerate children having imaginary friends, why not tolerate yourself believing in a god that may or may not be just as imaginary.. Really no harm in it.

For once, I agree. *jaa ab thand rakh and lussi pee. :) *

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

Well good luck finding the answer you want because most agnostics and atheists started as agnostics and atheists.

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

But do you actually feel that God exists or do you really believe in what you believe? Or is this statement just so can fit into the crowd. I mean belief is not by tongue but by heart.

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

No they didn't. They are taught in the footsteps of what they are born into and then they divert to being Agnost or Atheist for some reason or some defficiency they find in what they are brought up to believe.

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

Athiest, born muslim,

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

I have talked to scores, if not hundreds of agnostics or atheists in my lifetime. VERY few came from a religious background. Almost all came from agnostic - or at minimum - very secular families.

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

So again they were brought up into that belief and they per say have never diverted into anything else. I think I should be more specific, I'm talking about people who were not Agnostic or Atheist as they were brought up.

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

So what is your story. Why from muslim to atheist?

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

i learned,i grew up in a religious family. my mother still wears hijab and prays. organized religion is (to me) more a culture then religion. there are many sects, (this board is perfect example) many view points, i rather do good and try to be humble and respectable to others (in this life)then condemn them to hell after they die, or promise them an amazing life after. we are an organism, we evolved not created. there are signs of it all over the place, right in front of you. this is my opinion i'm not saying it to upset anyone, i respect everyone's belief and opinion,

Q. who evolved us?

Q. Do your parents know you are an atheist?

Q. Are you going to marry a muslim?

Q. If Muslim, How are you going to marry? Muslim way?

Q. Will you tell the person (if muslim) that you are no longer a muslim?

I want to know all these questions and many more that is confusing me .. please, tell us so that we know how an atheist goes through all these difficulties.. Thanks

Re: A question to Agnosts and Atheists?

I was born in a secular Christian family and "became" agnostic at about 11 years old when I was told the analogies of the Bible - Noah's arc, Samson, creationism, etc - were literal accounts. I felt there was no way to force myself to believe in them. I later read the Old Testamament and found Leviticus and other such horror stories very un-Godlike which futher cemented my belief that I was not Christian. I met too many good people who were supposedly going to hell.

I have since come to the realization that it is possible to interpret the Bible - and most religious texts - into my belief system w/o believing that every animal in the world was gathered and put on one boat or that the vast universe was created like a magic trick in 7 days. Or that one belief system trumps all others and that everyone else is going to hell.
