A question on Fitrah

Can sadaqah-e-Fitr be given before Eid day?

For instance if someone wants to donate fitrah in Earth Quake relief funds where Canadian government is matching dollar to dollar till Oct 26th (seven days before Eid day) will it be OK?

Re: A question on Fitrah

It supposed to be given before Eid day so the needy person has enough time to buy eid stuff.

Re: A question on Fitrah

^ yep, the fitrah is supposed to be given well before Eid day so that it serves its purpose.

Re: A question on Fitrah

On the sharia point of view, Fitrah has to be given before offering Eid Prayer but having said since that it's sole purpose is for the needy person to have a piece of celebration it should be given well before time. BUT If someone could not give before long enough time, he/she must pay it before the prayer.

Re: A question on Fitrah

another quick question .. how much should the Fitrah be? is there any fix formula to calculate this? jazakAllah

Re: A question on Fitrah

If my memory serves it right, it is equal to One Saa'a of wheat ... Saa'a is a some kind of measurement of which I do not have the relevent unit currently...

Re: A question on Fitrah

There is a formula to calculate it, as mentioned by Anwaar, its around 2kg of flour (aata) I blv. Many masajid in TX have said fitrah is $8 this time around.

Re: A question on Fitrah

the best time to give zakat-al-fitr is between the fajr prayer and the eid prayer on the day of eid....

scholars have said that giving it out a couple of days before eid is acceptable....

i dont think any scholar has found it right to give zakat-al-fitr way before eid....

some schoalrs still dispute that zakat-al-fitr shud be given off as FOOD and not money....

remember the zakat is for the NEEDY (he is supposed to be poor and not have enuff to feed on) so food is priority #1, if he just needs money to be 'celebrating' eid with new clothes, gifts, etc. then is a person seeking such luxuries really deserving of the zakat????

zakat-al-fitr is a small amount (a couple of dollars per person), i am sure we can save it to be given off at the right time and anything u give off as chairty for helping the earthquake victims, u will be rewarded for it....

Re: A question on Fitrah

^ zakat-ul-fitr ? :konfused:

Was it not Sadqa-e-fitr ?

celebrating eid with new cloths and gifts is a ‘luxury’ ? since when ?

Prophet (pbuh) stressed countless time on the virtues of exchanging gifts…

I remeber vaugely some incidents where prophet (pbuh) or some noble companion when they gave away their new cloths to less fotunate people before eid and celebrated eid wearing old dress.

I believe that considering the specific timing of this charity, it clearly shows that Allah wants muslims to share the joy of Eid with their poor brothers and sisters. No just provide resources to feed them, which should be done all year round

Anyway, sadqa-e-fitr is a small amount hardly few dollars so it is better to make it a round firugre (on upper side)

Re: A question on Fitrah

sadaqa is optional, zakat is obligatory....

what u have to pay on eid is not optional, its obligatory....
hence its zakat.... zakat-al-fitr....
and since its zakat-al-fitr u pay it on the fitr (i.e. when the fasting has ended, end of Ramadhan) and not before....

Re: A question on Fitrah

Can you cite a Quranic verse for this obligation? JAK

Re: A question on Fitrah

any source?

Re: A question on Fitrah

^ Captain1, the zakat-al-fitr is made obligatory by hadith and not by Quran....

and for the source, that is a popular view among the scholars, and to provide u a source on the net i have to google it, so better u than me, so u can learn a few extra things in the process....

Re: A question on Fitrah

Whatever Prophet PBUH told us to do is called sunnah (moakkadah?) or wajib, whatever we have been told to do in Quran is fardh, no? What are other "faraaidh" in sunnah other than this 'zakat'?

Re: A question on Fitrah

If fitrana is equivalent to 2 kgs of flour how does that come up to $7.00-8.00 which is what the mosque ppl say it is?

Re: A question on Fitrah

FF, did you add tax to it?

Re: A question on Fitrah

tax is tax its not a part of the price. Even if we do it doesn;t come up to 8.00. A 10 kg bag of wheat flour is for $8.00 isnt it?

Re: A question on Fitrah

For the “weight” used in fitrana calculation:
here you go, from the link : Thus, the saa mentioned in the Hadeeth is the saa of the people of Madeenah, which is available to this time. However, since it is not accessible to most of the people, scholars have estimated it approximately to four full handfuls (with hands put together) of an average man. [An-Nawawi in al-Majmoo 6: 69]

When:
Zakaat’al’fitr (in form of food) is to be given to needy/poor people so they can have good eid as well, it is recommended to be given in last days or on Eid day. For Muslims abroad who are unable to find poor (Muslims) can give early so distribution of fitrana is around Eid time…

Re: A question on Fitrah

I don’t know how they comeup with $8.00, as the above article shows that fitrana is four full hands of staple food which hardly exceeds 2-3 kg (4-6lbs).

Re: A question on Fitrah

zakat-al-fitr is FARDH and not Sunnah....

another example of fardh from Hadith:
seeking of knowledge, the Prophet (saw) is a FAREEDHA on all muslim men and women....
