Re: A Muslim, a Christian, a Sikh and a Hindu Walk into a College Dorm Room& Discover
I have seen Christians visiting a Hindu temple or mosque, Hindus visiting churches, gurudwaras, mosques, dargahs and Sikhs visiting Hindu temples -** but never seen a Muslim visiting anything other than a mosque. **What would you ascribe that to ?
Does Islam not teach that its is the only religion ??
I'm a Muslim and I've been to churches and cathedrals before :) I think I went to a synagogue once when I was younger but can't remember Would love to visit a Sikh or Hindu temple or any other religious place willing to let me in
I've been to plenty of similar interfaith peaceful events and they're lovely. I don't think that its against Islam in any way. Islam teaches its the true religion not the only one. Even though it's the final completed message, it still teaches to respect other people's faiths.

had rumi lived in today's balkh, he'd have been executed in a football field for his writings..
anyway, no one'll dispute the presence of tolerant elements and movements within almost every faith - but by and large, they all come with barbs and daggers drawn at other faiths and ways of life. those that try to sooth these jagged edges like the sufis, get often labelled by purists as wayward. there are simply things that can not be reconciled between most faiths - even minute differences.. like those between shias and sunnis, or sunnis and ahmedis.. are sufficient for annual killings.

Sadly your right...
I remember when I first went to a gathering of so called enlightened Muslims my views on tolerance were torn to tatters and I was shunned for being a son of non Arab kaffirs...
However just becuase the Wahabees have taken off in the last century or two does not mean all Muslims are flawed so tolerance in faith does exsit regardless of how few or many practice it...
even minute differences.. like those between shias and sunnis, or sunnis and ahmedis.. are sufficient for annual killings.
Your right again but this is when politics comes into religion... religion itlsef is not intolerant.

My friend The Player should take good note of that and conclude that I am by no means an exception ;)

Such minute differences that cause killings are due to the nature of human beings, not the religions that they practice. Even if there was no religion on Earth there would still be some excuse made to divide and label us all.
Re: A Muslim, a Christian, a Sikh and a Hindu Walk into a College Dorm Room& Discover
it is mere semantics to be saying things like oh its not religion that preaches intolerance, its the politics of religion, it is the followers, etc. religious leaders almost never reach out to other communities. it is the common people who do. one can argue that despite religion, these people still manage to have tolerance and meaningful friendships.
Re: A Muslim, a Christian, a Sikh and a Hindu Walk into a College Dorm Room& Discover
IN FACT, I would like to point to the very recent uprisings in Egypt just a week or so ago:
During all the protests and chaos, when it was time for Jummah the Egyptian Christians surrounded the Muslims whilst they prayed as a form of protection from the rioting. During the Sunday mass, the Muslims did the same for the Christians.
Now if that is not a form of tolerance and mutual respect then what the heck is?
This is not a new phenomenon. Such incidents have been repeated throughout history. Yes wars have raged between religious people, but almost all are politically orientated and use religion as a means of stirring things up the way they want. I however choose to be non cynical and focus on the moments of kindness that do occur between humans of all faiths and backgrounds, no matter how small those moments might be
Re: A Muslim, a Christian, a Sikh and a Hindu Walk into a College Dorm Room& Discover
Honestly look it up... the first stone was laid by a Muslim Saint and friend of the 4th Guru of the Sikhs if that aint tolerance for you then stuff the world and become a savage.
OK...I wouldn't really call that being built "thanks to a Muslim" :) However, I do not dispute your arguement about tolerance in that example. However, for every example of tolerance that you cite there are hundreds of example of intolerance towards other faiths by Muslims in the history of the Indian sub-continent. While a Muslim saint might have been involved in laying the first stone, Muslims and Afghans subsequently fought the Sikhs and even attempted to desecrate/demolish the temple.

Thats great, but remember that two swallows do not make a summer. Whether its the religion or the general interpretation of the religion by a majority of its followers, history has shown that Muslims have been more intolerant of other faiths than people from any other religions. There are enough historical facts that show demolitions of other religious places of worship, forcible conversion, religious tax for non-muslims and other forms of discrimination.
Personally, I have no issues with going to any place of worship other than my own since I believe in the concept of "One God" i.e. Ik Onkaar

I don't think history shows that all. If that were true Hindus would not exist today in the Indian subcontinent. What about the massive genocides conducted by White Christians when they colonized the Americas? Millions and millions of natives were killed and subdued and their culture today barely even exists. Plus not to metion the crusades and the inter-Christian conflicts of Catholics vs. Protestants.
Now if you can prove that to me in graphical chart format of Christian vs. Muslim, and actually show that Muslims have killed far more than Christians, then maybe we can start an honest discussion.

I strongly disagree. Muslims have been and sadly are still being intolerant, yes. MORE intolerant than others from any other religions? - noo wayyy
I don't think either of us is going to change opinion on this, so we'll just have to agree upon disagreeing.

Thanks for that Namlas your totally spot on with the historical arguement.
Muslims and Afghans subsequently fought the Sikhs and even attempted to desecrate/demolish the temple.
Thats true however that was hardly the fault of Religion that two empires came to fight one another had the Afghans been Jews or Bhuddists even fellow Hindus or Sikhs it probably would still have happened.
Fact is your arguements are not sufficent to lay the blame entirely on Islam, it is more tolerant as a Faith than Christianity and even Bhudism has had simmilar dark sides to it, Hinduism is itslef just as intolerant and by your logic your countries Iteehaas is filled with tales of endless blood letting long before and after the comming of Islam.
I cannot think of a more impressive argument for Islam being a force for good then the positive effect it had on converting my people were it not for the fact we took up such a tolerant faith we would still be making stupas out of our victims skulls. :)
Re: A Muslim, a Christian, a Sikh and a Hindu Walk into a College Dorm Room& Discover
Namlas is right, muslim conquerers of the subcontinent have by and large been lenient given the times they lived in. and no one's been worse to hindus than hindus themselves. a few temples and buildings are meaningless compared to the kind of brutality that has gone on in the name of castes for millenia. and not to forget, christian missionaries and conquistadors have committed the biggest genocides the world'd ever see, all with the full approval of religious leaders.

I was thinking of giving that example. It's so true: can anyone think of any such event conducted by Muslims that compares to this appalling huge scale obliteration of people from their very own land. No one ever thinks what happened to the Natives of America, Canada, Australia etc. They get no mention in the media, no memorial, no silence, no consideration to their mass murder. In actual fact they are portrayed as the bad guys in cowboy and indian films; I mean how twisted can it get? Wipe out a whole civilisation, and get away with it.
Have Muslims ever done anything that can even compare in magnitude?

Have Muslims ever done anything that can even compare in magnitude?
Wait a minute while I do a quick check....
.... the answer is a resounding no.
In fact Muslims can argue to have saved the world many times over... who preserved the works of the ancients?
Who helped teach the world much it holds for granted?
Who built half the world directly or indirectly?
Who set about the first documented laws that give the world a welfare state...?
In fact much the world takes for granted is directly or indirectly brought to you by Islam.
So I am sure this far outwieghs any crime commited by this great faith if the faith ever commited a crime... for heavens sake Biggots like Yazeed claim to be Muslim but it does not make them so... it's the likes of Yazeed that give Islam a bad name.

Not really. Hinduism survived despite Islam, not because of it. True, Christianity has had its share of violence but not all of it was done in the name of religion - most of it was colonial aspirations. Lets not confuse the two.
