A Marine's Letter Home

I just came across this. It provides some good insight on Franco-US Relations:

A Marine’s letter home…
Dear Dad: A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel (Bosnia): A French army officer walked up to me in the PX, and told me he thought we (Americans) were a bunch of cowboys and were going to provoke a war in Iraq. He said if such a thing happens, we wouldn’t be able to count on the support of France.

I told him that it didn’t surprise me. Since we had come to France’s rescue in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War, their ingratitude and jealousy was due to surface [again] at some point in the near future anyway. I also told him that is why France is a third-rate military power with a socialist economy and a bunch of pansies for soldiers. I additionally told him that America, being a nation of deeds and action, not words, would do whatever it had to do, and France’s support, if it ever came, was only for show anyway.

Just like in ALL NATO exercises, the US would shoulder 85% of the burden, and provide 85% of the support, as evidenced by the fact that this French officer was shopping in the American PX, and not the other way around.

He began to get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he would like to, I would meet him outside in front of the Burger King and whip his ass in front of the entire Multinational Brigade East, thus demonstrating that even the smallest American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman. He called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff.

With friends like these, who needs enemies?

Dad, tell Mom I love her,

Your loving daughter,

Mary Beth Johnson Lt Col., USMC

If US shoulder 85% of the burden then there must be 185 percent return... Hey no one is holding ya hand just pack up and leave. Don't tell us you are doing out of goodness of your heart. LOL....

My money is on Mary Beth in that fight....

Le soldat français est un oxymoron.

wow! Stu, I'm touched.

I think I'm going to join the American army right now. Where is the closest recruitment centre? What time are they open till?

"Socialist economy", "belligerent".. wow.. since when did white trash Lieutenants in the US Marines start getting a decent education?

hey france is not with us... that can only mean they are with "them"
thus becoming our enemy and we should attack them :)

I would'nt be quite so extreme in calling them that, but thats what King George said :)

Ana,

She is a Lieutenant Colonel. Probably has a Masters Degree.

And one of the smallest books I ever read was a pamphlet entitled “French War Heros”.

As I said before, the French are excellent allies. They are always there when they need you.

good work of fiction

I wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t produced by the same team that wrote mass letters in praise of Bush tax cuts to various newspapers.

PA

did you read the fan letter of alan greenspan as well as the roup of giys who won nobel prizes in economics to the pres about his economic plan

diff topic maybe a diff thread is needed.

Frauds, in that case, for a graduate, her letter is a disgrace. As any masters candidate will concur with, "whip his ass" would be better worded as "severely lacerate his backside".

It would have held in good stead if you had said Associates degree. Better luck next time.

The French btw, prefer to make love. Le soldat francais is an oxymoron, but le soldat Americaine is a definite moron.

"good work of fiction"

I suppose you would know fiction when you see it PA. You seem to live in a fictional world, where the US controls Al Jazeera, Israel controls the US, an OBL is an innocent victim.

Got nothing more to say about the letter Stu? Then don't bother taking your foot out of your mouth.

Ana, she prolly went to some mickey mouse state college in the south. I mean we have already talked about the whole top20 vs not issue in C&A and general.

whydid she want to punish this guy's mule though? so much violence..

pardon me for being opposed to baseless stories.. I’m fairly consistent in that regard.. visit the Religion forum if u need any proof :roman:

I agree that the the letter is probably a piece of fiction, but it's also full of facts. Now, where can I put this foot?? hmmmm

Oh now a piece of fiction is full of facts? Such as what? The PX in Bosnia? or that you guys helped out the French in Vietnam...lets see now was flying off the roof of your embassy part of that plan? Yesterday it was being presented as a factual letter and today it is probably a piece of fiction....I think the foot should stay right where it is.
