new machine does have both the windowz n mac operating system but u have to buy all the other softwares for mac 
p.s. ppl who study in States n Canadian institution they get student discount + nano FREE.

Check the prices on eBay first, that will give you an idea.
I say go for Mac. These days you can find 100s of thousands of Freeware for Mac as well.
In Germany the prices for MacBook start from around 1000,- Euro whereas for MacBookPro from around 1800,- Euros.
Both are Intel based.

Check this site and chose your categories.
e.g. I use VirtualBox, the one for virtual machines (to get WinXP, Debian, FreeBSD running on it)
There is a port of OpenOffice for Mac.
For MindMaping you could use openmind.
For browser you could use now FireFox (I never use Safari).
And there are other hordes of free utilities. Its all your choice.

Yeah that ones are expensive. But then there are other Freeware graphic tools, which as yet do not have that power as photoshop and co, but still are pretty good.
And besides there are always alternatives to get the “licenses” e.g. for Photoshop CS2, if you know what I mean, 
^ runs pretty smoothly on my Mac without paying a cent.
