He asked, first, how many wives did he have. How many wives did he have all at once.
And, why did he always marry these women himself, why did he not offer up one of his companions instead?
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet...
becuz they were already married
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet...
With Khadija, it was a love marriage. I don't care what anyone says to contradict it. Khadija liked the Prophet, so she proposed. Simple. She was a widow, and she thought he'd make a good second husband.
Aisha - married her out of choice.
The rest of the ladies he married were all widows or divorced, and many of them were linked to various tribes - so they were strategic moves for a great part to get other tribes to convert and cooperate with him. Also, it was encouragement to marry widows, orphans, and divorcees - ladies who didn't get rishtaas that easily.
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet...
With each wife, there is an example for us to learn from. It has so many dimensions, his teachings...that in islam you can't go wrong or deviate.
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet...
^ You'd think someone would pick up on that.
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet…
I have a book with each of those lessons, but it’s at the other end of my apartment and I can’t be bothered to go there. Can someone type it out please, otherwise I’ll do it on the July 2nd weekend.
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet…
Is this a Pakistani friend in Pakistan or someone in the west?
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet...
He had 11 wives, some say 9.
Sayyedah Khadija married him, not for love as PCG said. But she married him as she was directed by her cousin Who was a sholar of Islam, yes Islam which Prophet Jesus preached.
Why he asked Sayyedah Khadija to do that, here is a brief story.
As I said He was one of those who were on right religion before Prophet started preaching. He was also a great scholar of Bible, the original one not one of the changed versions. In Bible Allah sent verses of Announcement of a coming Prophet, ofcourse Sayyedna Mohammad. Prophet Jesus also mentioned to Bani Israel that He will come so follow him.
So Sayyedah Khadija cousin, why I forget his name omg, knew about him before his birth. He saw some signs in Sayyedna Abdullah (Father of Prophet) so he understood that he will be the father of that Prophet. So he tried to convince Sayyedna Abdullah to marry his Sister. But He married Sayyedah Aminah before perposal. So when Prophet grew up he aksed Sayyedah Khadija to marry him, as he dont want to loose the chance this time. And he succeed. When they got married, Sayyedah Khadija took Sayyedna Mohammad to him and set a meeting. Do you remeber what he said? He said," Mohammad I wish I could live long to see when the boys of Taif will throw stones on you. May Allah help you and make you strong. Amen."

Sorry, it looked instinctive :k:
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet…
Yeah, but question remains, why did he always marry these women hiself? Could he not have offered the hand of his companions instead to convince the tribes to convert?
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet…
This is an Afghan friend, not very religous.. Used this as an example for why he doubts..

Firstly 9-10 wives was no biggie in our Prophet :saw:'s society, people married even more.
Most of the Prophet :saw:'s wives were widowed and old and not particularly attractive (in the wordly sense).
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong but I think the order to have only 4 wives max was after his marriages, his wives by then were ‘mothers of beleivers’ and nobody could or would marry them after that.
Of course being a man he must have been attracted to women but Allah even put a ban on him marrying more wives than the ones he already had.
If the Prophet :saw: had wanted he could have had the most beautifull women of Arabia like he was offered by the pagans for abandoning the call to Allah but he declined, even later when he virtually became the ‘king’ of Arabia and of the hearts and minds of its people he could have chosen the most beautifull and youngest Arab girls for his wives but no he only married one virgin (our mother Aaisha) and the rest were all divorcees and widows.

Waraqa ibn Nawfal

100% right. Thanks gupguppy for reminding.
so here is more.
He married Sayyedah Sawdah after the death of Sayyedah Khadijah for his children. Sayyedah Sowdah was a widow woman and had a son from previous husband. So she was expirienced one for child care.
Then he married Sayyedah Hafsa, daughter of Sayyedna Umer. She was also widow but a young woman. When her husband was martyred in Battle of Baddar, her father was worried for her next marriage. He wanted to marry her with Sayyedna Abu-Bakr. But when he sent the perposal Sayyedna Abu-Bakr denied. Sayyedna Umer got disappointed and he sent the perposal again. But he denied again. Then after some time Our Prophet sent the perposal, on that time Sayyedna Abu-Bakr said," I knew that Prophet Mohammad want to marry her, thats why I was denying."
Names of other wives are Sayyedah Zainab bint-e-Hajash, Sayyedah Zainab, Sayyedah Umm-e-Habibah (sister of Abu-Sufiyan), Sayyedah Maria Qibtiya, (Sayyedah Umm-e-Kulsoom, Sayyedah Safiya.
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet...
Where did you get that from? The story goes that Khadija admired the Prophet for his honesty and hard-work, etc (his virtues, sum them all). He worked for her so she knew him well.
I never heard this about her cousin asking her to marry him.
And frankly, I don't know what high you people are on, but why is the idea of marrying for love so irreligious to you people??

As I said she was directed by her cousin Warqa Bin Nawfal, she set a plan to check him. As she was aware of signs of coming Prophet. So when she saw that he passed the test, she married him.
And here is more about other wives..........
And Sayyedah Aisha. I already explain the reason why Prophet married her. But here is in brief sence.
As you know Sayyedna Abu-Bakr was his closest friend. His only companion in Hijrat-e-Habsha, in Cave when they hided from Kufaars. Allah described these events in Holy Quran. So to make this relationship more strong and ever lasting and also to pay tribute to his friend, Prophet married his daughter Sayyedah Aisha Sidiqah.
She was most genius one of women in her era. She preached Islam to women. Women of Arab came to her and asked so many faminie questions whom they hasitated to ask directly from Prophet as he was a man. Mostly she answered them on the spot by her own opinion and also by Prophet orders. Some times if she didnot know the answer, she asked them by Prophet.
About Sayyedah Umm-e-Habibah (sister of Abu Sufiyaan) here are some interesting facts.
As I already mentioned she was sister of Abu Sufiyan so she was one of women whom belong to respectful families in Arab. She was married to a non-muslim man, as she was non-muslim. But she embraced Islam after some time. Her husband died by some reason, so she was left helplessly because Abu Sufiyan didnot accepted her as muslim. He tried to convince her to return to the previous religion, but she didnot accepted it at all. So there was no one to took care of her. She suffered from hunger as she dont have money to buy it.
When Prophet migrated to Habsha, he came to know about her. So he sent proposal to her as he wanted to help her. So Najjashi (King of Habsha) helped them and he also bound them in relationship of husband and wife, as he was also a muslim before preaching like Warqa Bin Nawfal. He also gave Haq Mehr of Sayyedah Umm-e-Habibah. it was a worthy one, to help them.
I forgot to mention another name of Umm-ul-Mu'mineen, Sayyedah Umm-e-Salma. She was also a widow and had a son called Salma, its an arabic name so dont get bothered by its faminity.
Sayyedah Maria Qibtiya was from a famous tribe of Jews. So Prophet married her for political reasons. Some say she was not her wife but a slave (Londi). But it does not matter as Qur'an has saperate laws for Slave Women and for Liberal Women (Azad Khuwateen).
Marring Sayyedah Zainab Bint-e-Hajash I already told the stoey about it. So here is in brief sence.
She was married with Sayyedna Zaid bin Harris. He was slave of Prophet but Sayyedah Zainab was from rich family. So this relationship could not last long because of social difference. And this is the most interesting point, Allah bound Prophet and Sayyedah Zainab bint-e-Hajash in marriage relation. Why? here is the reason as Allah said," I did this so people must know that their adopted sons are not like their own sons. And they can marry women which they divorce or got widow."
Sayyedah Safia was a princess. But her country was captured so she was brought to him like a slave. So for political matter, Prophet set her free and married her. Her real name was different but she was called Safia because in Arabic Safia means Maal-e-Ghanimat.
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet…
In that case I would point out to him that polygamy is the only way to maximize rates of birth in a population that is rapidly decreasing due to plagues, famines, droughts and wars, especially when disproportionately large number of males are dying to women. As far as the number of wives are concerned, it is also my understanding that Mohammad was allowed to retain his wives just like all other muslims with more than four wives, but that he didnt add to them, after he received the verses limiting the number of wives. So he received no special privileges from Allah in this regard, that other muslims didnt receive in a similar position.

bob

No, the Prophet was given special permission to have more than 4, when others were limited to 4, and was directed when to stop.
Also, could you post reference to Khadija marrying the Prophet because her cousin told her to? I don't see that as being true. The cousin you speak of met the Prophet after he recieved his first revelation, and that's when the cousin knew that this was the Prophet that he had been expecting.
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet...
Tell that afghan....no matter how hard he tries, he won't be accepted into the Anglo-Saxon fraternity.....
Re: A friend asked this question about the Prophet…
Ok I checked and I was partially wrong. Those with more than four wives had to cut down to four using divorce. However, Mohammad could continue to keep his nine, since those whom he had married were forbidden from marrying others. However, he was not permitted to add to the existing nine nor swap them.
