8 glasses of water

This is one of the many recommendations for health purposes. Does anyone actually manage this? If so, what sort of effect does it have apart from having to use the lavatory more often?

I cannot do it. Whenever I tried I felt tummy ache.

I agree, I like drinking nice cold water but after so much, you reach a point where you can't drink any more. That's why I was trying to find out if anybody actually manages this 8 glasses on a normal day. If you do any strenuous sports then it's no problem, but I can't imagine that amount being consumed under other circumstances.

Xtreme, don’t tell me you count how many glasses of water you drink in a day. You continue to amaze me.

I fill up my half a gallon water bottle in the a.m when I get to work and finish it by lunch and then finish another one before I leave from work. Sure enough there are a lot of visits to the loo.

If I don't drink that much water, I usually feel tired and anemic. Water keeps me refreshed.

Yes, I do a lot of exercise with racket ball at lunch and gym at night. So I need my water. Couch patatos might be fine with a 2-3 glasses a day.

AJ,

well that's the whole point isn't it? Obviously when you do sport you have to replace lost fluid but if you are a couch potato, then the 8 glasses of water is irrelevant advice.

Do you go through that regime every day? Don't you take any days out?

8 glasses of water doesn't literally means that u have to drink 8 glasses!

it's only 5/6 glasses, the remaining u get from ur food, like cucumbers and other food which contain 'water'...like fruit!

umm..I stayed away since I din' wanna sound too crude, but there's a way. Often at times, I eat tuna straight out of cans with just a sprinkle of salt and pepper. It's one the ways to sustain weight appropriate for my height, and also I feel too lazy to make anything appetizing out of tuna such as salads...but it's good!

When you are taking such a dense protein diet, then you ought to keep your kidneys clear, and only way to do is by drinking at least couple of liters of water with each 120 grams of tuna. So in essence, both are tied together. The day I eat two cans, I end up drinking four or five liters of water.

Couple years ago on a really hot day
i drank almost 30 glasses of water. Yes i counted

Normally i drink around 12-15 glasses of water.
I get thirsty a lot so it's not something i have to do
out of my way.:)

Should be added to Xtreme's "Why we should hate america" thread.

The first thing i usually do as soon as i reached my work place is to fill up my litre bottle n keep it on my desk where i can see it… usually i finish it up by the time i get off… and at home i usually drink around couple or more glasses of water every day.. so i guess it all sums up to 8 glass everyday.. but when i dont hav my litre bottle in front of me, i couldnt even seem to remember that i need to drink water to survive the day  .. khair… i manage.. sumhow!

I drink about 10-12 glasses, easily, considering Karachi's heat. The heat keeps my thirst alive throughout the day and water is the only liquid that quenches it. Coke, Mirinda, falsa juices, etc just don't do it.

Why would you hate americans for racquet-ball..either, you can't play or afraid of getting your Aussie ass whooped....I am glad you prolly haven't seen roller-hockey yet..

I have read several articles on this because I know I dont drink 8 glasses of water a day. The 8 glasses a day is considered conventional wisdom, and there is no proof that you need atleast 8 glasses a day. Infact the National Academy of Sciences is planning to do a major study on just this. You can get water from many sources, including tea, soda, fruits, etc.

I read that its best to drink when you are feeling thirsty (dont ignore your thirst) or if you sweat a lot, drink at regular intervals.

Therefore I do just that. I drink when I am thirsty, and it doesnt amount to 8 glasses of water a day. Probably 5-6, and the other 2 coming from foods/drink.

Munni,

that pretty much is how I would assess it. If you don't feel thirsty, it's probably for a good reason. Inotice that most people here who do drink a lot of water stay in hot climates or it's after physical activity which are both pretty much expected. Or in Abdullah's case it's because of his wacky diet but then he's always been an odball :D

p.s.

racketball will go into the Hate America thread tomorrow when I have more time.

I usually get my water from soft drinks, juices etc (which I drink a lot). Maybe 2-5 glasses of water a day.

:--) An oversized bouncy ball plus a tennis racquet and voila....you get racquet-ball....sort of squash for beginners :p

Alot depends on climate/humidity....power setting on the A/C, I easily drink 10+ glasses a day (juice, water, coffee etc).

I suppose in ye olde Englande you can get away with licking the dew from some buttercups on your way to work Xtreme :).

People have to remind me to drink water. I can never remember...unless of course, it's really hot and I'm mega thirsty. sighs any tips?

ohh..heard this lamer before…and many other similar ones such as rugby is more physical than football since the latter players wear protection gear..who said that ingnorance is bliss..
