78 Muslims suffocated to death by Thai Armed forces!

**At least 78 people died in southern Thailand after being arrested and loaded into army trucks following Monday’s clashes with security forces.

It was the latest in an upsurge of violence in the Muslim-majority south.
**
“After we brought people who were arrested into detention, we found that another 78 people were dead,” Justice Ministry spokesman Manit Suthaporn told reporters.

Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan, a forensic expert for the Justice Ministry, told the BBC that 80% of the victims died from smothering or suffocation and 20% from stress or convulsions

Police said they fired water cannon and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Some reports also said police used live ammunition.

A local Islamic leader said he was in shock after being informed of the latest death toll.

“I cannot say what [is] going to happen, but I believe that hell will break out,” Abdulraman Abdulsamad, the chairman of the Islamic Council of Narathiwat, told The Associated Press.

**But Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who flew to the south after the clashes, has praised the security force’s response. **

More than 400 people have died this year in clashes between militants and security forces in Thailand’s Muslim-majority southern provinces.

Muslims in the south have long complained of discrimination, and civil servants and security officers have been targeted in a wave of violence which began in January this year.

Muslim separatists fought a low-key insurgency in the region in the 1970s and 80s.
78 Muslims suffocated to death by Thai Armed forces!

78 Muslims suffocated to death and the Thai president praises this act by saying the Thai forces have done a great job. The muslims of thailand have paid a big price this ramadhan may allah(swt) grant them the reward which they deserve for becoming shaeed. As for the rest the muslims in thailand they face a struggle against a kuffar government hell bent on inflicting maximum force to make the muslims cow down and obey there every wish and desire, and the government will fail you cannot hold down a people by force by going against there very nature and ideals as the iraqi and palestinian muslims have shown the other kuffar forces such as the yahood squatters the israelis and the good for nothing abusers the amerikkans!

Victory will always come to those that have the truth and fight for the truth !

How do we know from this article that these protestors "have the truth and fight for the truth"? Just because they were "Muslims"? They were arrested because they were in a violent protest and reportedly were armed and appeared to have taken drugs.

yeah that's true..if we don't know what they were protesting for..then we can't say this was a crime against muslims..until its proven..this is plainly a crime a against a group of humans..tho there's nothing plain about it.

78 people dying of suffocation is NOT a crime my goodness these amerikkan right wingers are more sick than i imagined!

 Who said this isn’t a crime? Whether it was criminal negligence, manslaughter or murder this is obviously a crime!

This is pretty bad, no due process, whether or not you believe these guys were right or wrong, no one deserves to be treated in such inhumane conditions where they die of suffocation. pretty shameful attitudes displayed here.

Demand for Thailand deaths probe
Protestors lie on the ground after a demonstration turned violent in southern Thailand (25/10/04)
Protesters were arrested and many then loaded into army trucks

Amnesty International has urged the Thai government to impartially investigate the deaths of at least 84 protesters in the south of the country.

Seventy-eight people died after being arrested and loaded into army trucks following Monday’s clashes with security forces, which left six dead.

A foreign ministry spokesman said all the facts would be made known.

The violence, which erupted after the arrest of Muslim men, was the latest in an upsurge in the Muslim-majority area.

The clashes began on Monday after at least 1,500 protesters gathered outside a police station in Narathiwat province to protest against the detention of six men accused of providing weapons to Islamic militants.

After clashing with security forces, more than 1,000 protesters are reported to have been arrested.

Officials said almost all the dead suffocated as they were taken to an army barracks several hours away.

Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan, a forensic expert for the Justice Ministry, told the BBC that 80% of the victims died from smothering or suffocation and 20% from stress or convulsions.

Army deputy commander Maj-Gen Sinchai Nujsathit admitted that “we had more than 1,300 people packed into the six-wheel trucks” for a journey to Pattani province that took five hours.

“All deaths related to this incident… must be promptly, effectively and independently investigated,” the London-based rights group said in a statement.

More violence feared

Neighbouring Malaysia, on the border with southern Thailand, also expressed concern.

“We hope the government of Thailand will be able to manage this crisis so that it will not spread and inflame further violence,” Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told reporters.

But Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who flew to the south after the clashes, has praised the security force’s response.

“They have done a great job,” he told reporters, before the higher death toll was announced. “They (the protesters) really set out to cause trouble so we had to take drastic action against them,” he said.

Australia?

It is nice to condemn such brutal killings.

When Hindus, Christians or Jews can lice without problem in any country as a minority section, what is wrong with Muslim community that they habitually complain of irregularities, and desire a separatist approach?

Thandymazza, stick to the topic. We are not at a religious forum.

anjjan, could u tell me if there is something inherently wrong with the jewish community?

Thailand used force of arms to surpress and annex those Muslim areas in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

I think that is utterly marvelous that, although somewhat belated, these Muslims should try and use force of arms to restore their independence.

God willing, they will soon aquire large numbers of guns, mines, anti-tank launchers, mortars and rocket artilley. I pray for this this and urge all here to do that.

Humble beginnings can lead to great things. Remember, the Kosovo Liberation army began in the mid 1990s as nothing more than a handful of tribesmen with hunting rifles and grew into so much more than that...

Where there is injustice, the forces of liberty grow stronger day by day.
