Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

again having 100 channels doesn't mean they are free :p

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

Quantity does not mean quality. In our case, it usually means more crap

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

Fantastic. Media revolution has changed Pakistan forever.

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

I agree

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

I am afraid that Al Qaida's media wing will soon get their own channel in Pakistan.

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

Not sure if current channels have any "deo-bandi" flavor to it, if there is any than the way LastOfDinosaurs interprets things, they already are there :D

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

^^ what Deobandi has to do with alqaeda? Osama is a graduate of Darul-uloom Deoband ?

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

If you ask LastDino, he probably thinks Osama and Mullah Omar are both Urdu speaking hindustanis from Deoband, India.

Brother, actually whatever Pakistan got in media freedom, it is because government allowed private channels in numbers. Else, it was impossible for anyone in Pakistan to start their private channel or even radio stations; rather it was even difficult to start private newspapers.

Most Pakistani private newspapers depend on Government advertisements and in past even what papers for their newspaper, they use to get with government permission.

This is how government use to control media. But when President Musharraf came to power, he liberalised Media, not just because they are not controlled by government through Laws, Corrosions, and Harassment, but by giving permission to start private TV channels, let them prosper in the country, and let media become independent of Government regulations.

This is the way to give media freedom … In UK media was once almost completely government controlled, but when British government gave permission to ITV (private TV channel) TV media became a bit free, once Ch4 (Private channel) started transmitting media became more free and later CH5 (private channel) made TV media further free.

Actually private media and their numbers are directly proportional to how much the media is free. If government wants to control media, they would have to stop all private media, except those that would follow government lines, and that is the way to control media.

It is difficult to stop written media as in controlled environment, they go underground. There effects get reduced but still they stay active. But it is very easy for government to ban TV and Radio media, as that need open air transmission.

Present government of President Musharraf tolerates, rather encourages free media. Let see what would happen down the line when there would be no Pervaiz Musharraf and corrupt would come back to power. Though I think that since present government has given such awareness to masses, it would be very difficult if not impossible to curb the media again (may not be difficult for any future dictator, but certainly elected government would find it very difficult to curb media again even though they would love to).

:omg:

but dont forget to relate back to the irony mentioned by Captain1. (only valid comment so far)

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

Media is free as long as it does not step on some sensitive toes. As it happens, politicians aren't really Musharraf's constituency, so they can swear, jab and grope each other on LIVE Tv as much as they want because:

1) The rowdy behavior on Talk Shows is practically harmless for Mush
2) Serves to show him in positive light in the West. Benevolent Dictator, as if the world hasn't already seen enough of this variety.

But we all know what happens when a journalist tries to cover going ons in FATA (killed)? Balochistan (killed)? Army's business interests ?(Denied access to Islamabad Club. Phones bugged), CJ's trial (Attack on Geo)? CJ's visit to Karachi? (Attack on AAJ/ PEMRA ord. 2007? Bringing Pemra under Minfo's command.) or simply trying to cover a suicide explosion (Kidnapping of Babar Hussain- Dawn News).

So yeah, I guess u could say there is lots of media freedom. If we equate talk shows with media freedom and r so gullible to take it hook, line and sinker, then probably we deserve this facade of media freedom, anyway.

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

West would love to see corrupt democracy (or family rule — Monarchy … Kings) and controlled Media in third world countries. That suits them best. When there is corrupt democracy, they can make the person do whatever they like (west do not have shortage of money and nevertheless, what corrupts receive from them stays in west anyhow). As for Kings, they scare them to follow Western line else they (west) would create, encourage and would start financing popular mass movement in the country with money, facilities, supports, and arms. As for media, that is way to make masses aware and west never like the masses in third world country to be aware of whatever their ruler and country is doing.

Re: 75 tv channels to be operative by year-end: Durrani

LMAO! Pakistani's living abroad with no sense of the realities on the ground. Yes 75 TV stations. Tell me this, why did Musharraf's govt try to pressure Dawn into changing its reporting by changing the government laws regarding advertising money paid to news papers.

Or rather tell me why AAJ TV is routinely shut down when it places hard facts about corruption and scandal under Musharraf's regime? You idiots claim all this greatness. Ask a journalist in Pakistan what he truly thinks of the "freedom" Musharraf's regime provides and you will get a completely different story.
