It has everything to do with PR. The negative connotations to something that is clearly allegorical for the simple sake of mocking and ridiculing is not something Muslims do to themselves...the knee jerk embarrassment (out of ignorance) to placate those who mock us is very much an act of PR.

Many here (and I am assuming those who blow themselves and others up for this honor) do not believe it to be allegorical. People wouldn't mock and ridicule if they didn't.
