7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

I am alarmed by the increasing amount of young girls (ages 7-10) getting their nails done for the summer. The malls and manicure places are packed with them.

Not only the designs expensive but time consuming. I believe I saw the mother pay the nail specialist $40!! but add on the tip and wow.

I don’t want to harp on the money aspect but in my day and age nail polish was a no no just like makeup. It was not age appropriate until the rest of the makeup was allowed.

Is nailpolish different? It is harmless fun for the kids or it’s not age appropriate?

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

I don't mind nail polish on little girls. And though I don't think they should be going regularly to the salon, I don't think it's a big deal if as a treat they want to copy their mom/aunts/etc and get them done too. Otherwise a fun color on little girls' nails doesn't bother me. But done at home, not at a salon.

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

I don't mind nail polish but getting your mani pedi done at the salon at such a young age is really inappropriate ..

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

^ Why is it inappropriate? Not that my girls do that (6 and 9), so no I am not defending - but dont all little girls get a kick out of wearing mommy's sandals and holding her purse.

I can understand if little girls get totally into manicure and nail polishes, only because it will distract them, but having a little mommy-daughter fun time during holidays - i dont see it that alarming

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

We don't have this trend here in UK...yet.

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

Maybe inappropriate isn't the right word but getting your nails done at the salon is not cheap. I think starting price would be from $25-$30, that's a little too much for a 7 year old ... don't you think? Getting them done once in a blue moon with your mommy just for fun is fine, but doing it regularly is not. I think kids should be kids, getting into all this high maintenance stuff should not be of their concern at least until they are in their teens.

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

Mother knows best........whats anyone's problem?? its the parent's responsibility........the mother wants to get it done.........she gets it done......

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

That I totally agree.

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

Unfortunately, mother doesn't always know best. Have you seen toddlers and tiaras?

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

but people in this very forum say that...now i am confused :(

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

I'm not sure why it's a bad thing for little girls to wear nail polish. One of my khala's who was big into nail polishes always used to paint my nails when I was little. Yet I didn't start wearing make-up until junior high.

I have several friends and co-workers whose little girls LOVE to put on polishes. Most of them occassionally take their girls with them to salons for a "girls day out".

As for the money aspect....its all relative. Forget kids....my hubby has a co-worker whose DOG goes to "daycare" every-single-day. And she pays $35 every-single-day for her DOG. But guess what.....based on her income....that's literally nothing to her. Similarly, if someone can afford to pay for regular manis/pedis for their kids....I don't think there's anything wrong with that either. Personally I would not take my daughter on a regular basis....but if someone else does and can afford it, I would not judge them for their decision in this specific case.

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

I remember we use to get to wear nailpolish for EID. my mom use to paint our toe nails while we were sleeping and on EID morning VOILA!

But something seems off when a 8 year old says - "oh no I ruined my manicure".

I guess nail polish is a transition makeup like lip gloss. It's a parent's call to say what they are comfortable with.

I have a 6 and an 8 and I sometimes do their nails at home. Honestly hubby doesn't like it. He doesn't like anything that gives him the impression that his babies are growing up into little ladies.

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

why wouldn't you personally take your daughter??

due to financial issues or the ''inappropriateness'' ??

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

LOL....yea I can imagine this.

Personally, I would not judge someone (whether its the kid or mom) simply on the fact that the kid gets regular mani/pedis. However, if I knew the family personally, and knew for a fact that the kid is a spoiled brat and/or the family's financial position doesn't allow for a luxury like this.....that's a different story.

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

Yeah, njgal, my hubby doesn't like it either. I used nailpolish for the first time to bribe my 2yo to let me cut her nails. So I've only painted her nails once, but hubby was not happy about it. But she was so excited!

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

I hate it when children wear nailpolish, but my sis wants to wear nailpolish to copy me so I guess its my fault :/

I've hidden all my nailpolishes now, so hopefully she gets over that idea!

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

nopse I wasnt allowed to wear makeup/nail polish EVER and I dont think I missed on anything.. in fact my husband is grateful to my mother because I still dont own any makeup and we save money that way :D

the only time I ever had my nails painted were for my nikkah and then rukhsati.. and I remember asking my mom if it was okay to do so :D

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

tbh I like nail polish on my girls but in limits, they're only painted on special occasions.
But being obsessive about it and care if it's chipped or not, is ridiculous.

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

nothing wrong with it, it is cute, it is fun!

Re: 7 year old with painted nails - age appropriate or not?

I wont care if young girls are wearing nail polish or getting their nails done, regularly or on some special occasion.
But I will not do it for my daughter. The only reason being that I just do not like it,just like I do not like little kids having their feet filled with henna designs or henna uptil their elbows. It is a personal choice only, which applies to my kid...:D
