well figures are by PTA so they cant be wrong, but just look at the brighter picture, when a rickshaw driver and a paan wala has a mobile, surly the sector is booming like mad.
my cosins in pakistan live in a very small poor city, and they are also poor but they all have phones even the children,
MOBILE HAS BECOME A FASHION STATEMENT IN PAKISTAN.

they are not counting sim cards, but sims which are active, once you dnt use your card for a number of days it automaticly goes inactive, so there is nothing wrong with the accountancy, just look at the numbers, around 5m users subscribed in just the last 2 months, thats incredible.

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

There would ofcourse be some (maybe 2-3%) of the figure inaccuracy. Like someone mentioned, many people have used the sim and discarded. I for example have 2 sims of different companies and I use both. i know many people who use two phones.

There is good network expansion going on which is a healthy sign. There is no doubt that even if it is not around 50m subscriber base, there has been immense growth in the sector. Thanks to the good deregulation.

One thing that would be great would be number portability....that was promised. That would promote real competition.

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

MNP finally began from Fri 23 March.

ISLAMABAD: Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service which enables the users to change the operator while retaining the same mobile number and code will go live today (Friday).

Pakistan is the first country in the region to implement this facility which would be available to mobile phone users from March 26. The system ensures ‘freedom of operator choice’ as well as quality of service for the subscribers and had been adopted in several countries for protection of vital interests of public and for achievement of optimal competition.

According to PTA here Thursday, this system poses many technical and administrative challenges for the operators but provides a competitive landscape for subscribers and operators. Usually MNP increases the potential of churn (loss of customers),thereby forcing service operators to work hard to retain their customers. However, MNP helps the best company to win.

Chairman PTA, Maj General (R) Shahzada Alam Malik had said that with the launch of MNP, more than 52 million mobile subscribers would be able to avail the facility which would encourage healthy competition for quality service and competitive tariffs.

It is recalled that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had set up Pakistan Mobile Number Portability Database Company Limited (PMD) last year to cater to the project’s needs. All the six cellular mobile operators and PTA were members of the PMD Board.

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

^^

Excellent! Watch competitive activity now kick into ultra high gear. Pakistan's consumers can only win with this.

PTCL might end up being the loser, but frankly, if if cannot compete in a free market and offer its consumers a good deal with good service at a good price.... it deserves to suffer.

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

MNP....

Excellent news indeed....!

**Pakistan Leads India in Teledensity?
**
That India has emerged the world’s fastest growing telecom market may have attracted global telecom giant, Vodafone, but if reports are to be believed, our neighbours, Pakistan, have a higher mobile penetration than us. This, despite a lower per capita income, and nearly same handset costs and call tariffs. Mobile penetration in Pakistan is reportedly around 30 percent, almost double that in India - 14.3 percent. One of the factors to which analysts attribute the lower penetration is the country’s dense population. India enjoys the reputation of being the second most populous country in the world, with over 1 billion people. In comparison, Pakistan’s population stands at only about 155 million people. Things are however, expected to get better, with global investment bank, Macquarie Research, pegging wireless penetration to increase to about 36.7 percent in the next three years. ** Rising household incomes and emergence of a dual mobile phenomenon in middle to high income groups are the likely drivers in fuelling this rise, according to analysts. **But, similar drivers are expected to take mobile penetration to even higher levels in Pakistan as well. The Pakistan Telecom Authority has reportedly set a target of overall teledensity close to 90 percent by 2015…

Pakistan now leader in mobile usage in South Asia, says GSMA report

Mobile industry has created more than 220,000 high-paying jobs in Pakistan and accounts for 5 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The GSM Association, a trade association of GSM mobile operators worldwide has recently released the preliminary results of a study prepared by Deloitte which also found that this sector also contributed approximately 6 per cent of the total taxes collected by the Central Board of Revenue. The study found Pakistan’s economy and society is benefiting from rising mobile phone usage and low tariffs, which lowers the cost of doing business and improves productivity, while helping families and friends to connect to each other at home and abroad. Deloitte estimates that over a period of 10 years the elimination of the activation tax would generate an additional Rs.
132 billion (US$2.17 billion) in total tax revenues through the positive impact on the mobile industry and its spill over into the broader economy, above what the government would obtain maintaining the tax.

The study shows that tax collections from the mobile industry would grow consistently year on year in the period 2007-2017 due to increased penetration and higher revenues. Last year, mobile operators invested US$2 billion in Pakistan, 54% of the total foreign direct investment in the country, according to the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority. These findings were released when GSMA’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Rob Conway visited Pakistan in last week of March. Rob Conway met in Islamabad with President and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. He also met with CEOs from Ufone (Mubashir Naqvi), Mobilink (Zouhair Khaliq), Paktel (Guo Yonghong), Telenor Pakistan (Tore Johnsen), and Warid (Hamid Farooq), as well as the Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunications, Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari and Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA), Maj Gen ® Shahzada Alam Malik. “With 53 million mobile users and 34 per cent penetration, Pakistan is now a leader in mobile usage in south Asia,” said Mr. Conway.

China Mobile to invest $400 million in Pakistan

China Mobile Ltd., the world’s top cellular carrier by subscribers, plans to spend $400 million this year to expand its network in Pakistan, the firm’s Chairman Wang Jianzhou said. China Mobile already has a foothold in Pakistan, which has more than 52 million mobile users, after it agreed earlier this year to buy an 89 percent stake in money-losing operator Paktel Ltd. for $284 million, its first acquisition outside its home market. Wang said that China Mobile had invested $460 million in Paktel to date, but he did not elaborate, according to the official Webcast of comments he made at the Boao Forum for Asia being held on the southern island province of Hainan. Wang said that China Mobile would make further investments next year focused on improving Paktel’s sales systems and building new brands. He also said China Mobile was hoping to garner experience from the venture that it could apply to further overseas expansion.

Separately, speaking with reporters on the sidelines of the forum, Wang reaffirmed that China Mobile planned to list shares on mainland China bourses, but he declined to give any detailed timeframe. Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told the opening session of the forum on Saturday that he saw China’s rapid economic growth as a model for other Asian countries. He said he saw trade between Pakistan and China growing to $15 billion a year within five years. Aziz also said that he expected Pakistan to take in about $6 billion in foreign direct investment this year, reaffirming an existing estimate.

ISI gave free handsets to people, there are not 46 millsion cell phone users in pak, just a few thousand military people who have many handsets which they sell on black market.

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

:hehe:

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

After just 3 months the figure is close to 56 million, and a Teledensity of almost 36%.

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

This is horrible news. Most of you are perverting statistics to sell a "mashallah pakistan is progressing" image. It's not true.

The reasons mobile phones are popular is because landlines are impossible to set up. What does that mean?

It means our infrastructure sucks! It means a household choses to get a cellular phone instead of bothering to get a land line.

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

that is not true at all, etisalat arnt dumbos that they will pay over $2 billion for just 25% in PTCL. there is obviously a big demand there

and everyone i know uses landline, only few use mobiles.,

Re: 46 Million Cell Phone Users in Pakistan

So you are saying that a large percentage of Pakistanis having cellphones with little landlines is worse than Pakistanis having no cellphones with little landlines?
