3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

I am not blaming the Umpire...I am blaming the ICC for letting "HUMANS" make these mistakes again and again in this day and age of technology.

And this thing about - "it all evens out in the end" is total bull-crap in my opinion.

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

In which case you're suggesting one of the two:

  • The umpire is biased against tendulkar
  • Statistically umpires favour bowlers over batsmen

The latter shouldnt be unfair for you since your bowlers would get the same benefit.

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

I think what he is suggesting is that Tendu is KKG.

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

... and no, I am not going to explain what is KKG. Those who know, know. Those who don't are better off not knowing. :-)

From where did you get the above ideas....not sure if you are even making any sense.

First things first ---- Wrong decisions whether against the batsman or the bowler NEVER EVEN OUT IN THE END **(in terms of degree of their impact to the two teams)......this is a **romantic notion that is purported by politically-correct people (mostly commentators/columnists).

I am currently discussing wrong LBW deicisions (does not matter against the batsman or the bowler) --- because they constitute the vast majority of Umpiring mistakes.

I have posted enough about this topic even before this latest Tendulkar decision.

The Third Umpire should be allowed to use the HawkEye technology to overrule the field Umpires on "clearly wrong" LBW decisions. The operative words here are "clearly wrong". I am fine with not using HawkEye for "marginal" decisions.

Every single match these days have at least a couple of wrong LBW decisions,....we cannot just continue to live with it.

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

Even third umpire give wrong decisions, latest one I saw was against Symonds stumping by Dhoni (2nd test??)

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

^ Yes...true....even 3rd Umpires can be a-holes some times (and they do not even have the "human error" excuse)....but that does not mean that we do nothing to rein in the absurdly high number of wrong decisions on the field.

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

what are you going on about
that made no sense

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

Sehwag's batting was just agonizing to watch and Jaffer failed yet again.

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

hahaha, pata nahin kahan se bola...

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

I didn't watch the game, of course; but some who actually saw the whole innings, say that not only did umpires saved Dravid on a plumb out; but they had not given Tendu out when he was plumb LBW in the over immediately before the over he was out. So according to them, umpires just balanced that wrong decision in the next over - no long term "balancing act" is required.

Again, I am just narrating what others who saw the innings said.

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

remarkable performance by the Indian bowlers....now lets c if they can sustain the pressure or are we going to see a "standard" recovery by the aussies!

Re: 3rd Test: Australia vs. India at Perth (WACA) Jan. 16-20, 2008

Its simple statistics. If you believe a phenomenon (umpires committing mistakes against batsmen) is consistent then you shouldnt be worried, since your players ( if not the same player ) will benefit too over time. If you dont believe the phenomenon is consistent then you're alleging intent.

Its actually not romantic, nor politically correct. It is based on an assumption of uniformity of error. If the umpires err consistently a certain way you (or your team) are likely to get as much benefit as loss over the long run.

Na. Being from a field related to image processing its pretty safe to say that these are only estimates, and probably wouldnt give "predictable" results for a batsman (in which case he cant play in a way to avoid LBWs). The mechanism through which an umpire gives LBWs goes into how batsmen select their shots. "If it pitches outside leg", "swinging too much", "im too far forward" etc. While hawkeye is fun for viewing I dont think its good umpiring criteria, which should be done the usual way.

Plus how you decide "clearly wrong" is "clearly" after the fact, and is once against subjective to the (third) umpire's judgement. How can you eliminate his bias/errors?
