No call-up for Shoaib Akhtar: Selectors name 39 probables

By Our Sports Correspondent
LAHORE, April 22: Dope-tainted fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was not considered on Sunday for the national training camp, which starts here from Saturday for next month’s three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.

While announcing the list of 39 probables, chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said Shoaib still required more time to regain fitness. He also said Younis Khan, who is playing for Yorkshire in England, could be included in the final squad if he confirmed his availability.

The newly-appointed selection committee held a two-day meeting at the PCB headquarters to announce the decision. Shafqat Rana and Saleem Jaffar, two members of the selection committee, also attended the meeting.

Salahuddin said the committee had also decided that in future no player will find himself in contention for the national team without playing domestic matches.

** “It is the unanimous decision of the committee that it will only consider those players who will show their interest in the domestic cricket and it is part and parcel for every cricketer to perform in domestic cricket to earn a place in Pakistan team,” he said.**

He said as it was the first assignment of the new committee, it wanted to see maximum players, therefore, the number of probables had been acceded to 30.

He admitted that some players were still missing but the selectors would give every player a chance to show his mettle.

  • He said though Younis was asked to confirm the availability, the selectors did not contact Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Azhar Mahmood and Danish Kaneria, who are all are playing county cricket.*

Meanwhile, the selectors put Mohammad Hafeez in the list of all-rounder and did not consider him as specialist opener.

In all, seven openers and ten middle-order batsmen were summoned for the camp.

Five all-rounders, including Pakistan new captain Shoaib Malik, are also included in the list. A total of 10 fast bowlers have been called up including Mohammad Asif.

Four spinners and three wicket-keepers will also appear in the camp.

Probables:

Openers: Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Imran Nazir, Khurram Manzoor, Taufiq Umar, Babar Naeem, Khalid Latif.

Middle-order batsmen: Mohammad Yousuf, Faisal Iqbal, Misbah-ul-Haq, Asim Kamal, Hasan Raza, Naved Latif, Yasir Hameed, Riffatullah Mohmand, Shahid Yousuf, Adnan Raza.

All-rounders: Shoaib Malik, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, Fawwad Alam.

Fast bowlers: Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Sami, Umar Gul, Rao Iftikhar, Shabbir Ahmed, Abdul Rauf, Mohammad Irshad, Najaf Shah, Shahid Nazir, Mohammad Khalil.

Spinners: Abdur Rehman, Tahir Khan, Atif Maqbool, Mansoor Amjad.

Wicket-keepers: Kamran Akmal, Sarfraz Ahmed, Zulqarnain Haider.

I believe this was selection committee’s first task, and I think they have quietly said that the game of musical chair will continue (openers), and the rest are the future players.

The criteria defined by them is “domestic cricket” willingness to play and perform as well. I feel Hafeez should not be consider at all for a while, he came as an opener and now he is push into category of all-rounder. and I feel deeply for Yasir Arafat (I feel he was under study of Razzy.) that his name is missing out.

Chances should be given to Fawwad Alam(all-rounder), Khalid Latif(opener), Baber Naeem(opener), Mansoor Amjad(spinner), Tahir Khan(spinner), Yasir Hameed(middle order), Najaf Shah and Mohd Khalil (bowlers). I know its a wishful thinking that 8 players will be consider all of a sudden but if 3/4 make it that will good news and are allowed to play for a decent time.

** “It is the unanimous decision of the committee that it will only consider those players who will show their interest in the domestic cricket and it is part and parcel for every cricketer to perform in domestic cricket to earn a place in Pakistan team,” he said.

**So wait....what exactly were the criterion before the almighty selection committee made this bold decision? The length of the player's beard?

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

From a 'match-winner' to a 'dope-tainted'. How quickly the times change.

Mudassar Nazar has been directly issued a 30-day notice by Nasim Ashraf to identify and select two openers for Pakistan nationals who can be stuck with, for a long and permanent period of time. This statement was in effect about ten, fifteen days ago at a press conference. 'Identify' was the term used by Ashraf while he pointed towards Nazar and stated that it is his task to do so (choose the right two).

In the end (however far that might be), whoever is potentially 'identified', let's stick to that combination for a while, under different and varying conditions. It will be of no use of going back to make-shift openers. Everybody and their grandmothers have been toyed around with. Let's stick with one for a whole series and literally dump the rest. How else are you going to give them the required confidence to be able to boost themselves in situations and increase their morale?

Good comments at the end, Acrobi Bhai.

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

No it was maintaining status quo. No change is good change. Unless some one is injured. Then just as ask the Coach and Captain who they want as a replacement.

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

For Abu Dhabi series 16man squad I'll take:

Openers: Salman Butt, Babar Naeem, Khalid Latif.

Middle-order batsmen: Mohammad Yousuf, Asim Kamal, Yasir Hameed.

All-rounders: Shoaib Malik, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Fawwad Alam.

Fast bowlers: Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul, Abdul Rauf, Mohammad Khalil.

Spinners: Abdur Rehman.

Wicket-keepers: Zulqarnain Haider.

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

^^ nice team homid bhai, only if there was a way that selectors and captain could see the selected 16.

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

Who will supervise the training session since they have no coach. Will they keep on using maulvi Mustaq until they find a new coach?

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

For the search of coach, they have a deadline of May 15/19 and if I am not wrong they will be in A_D by May 9th to play the 3 games against Srilanka. so there will be an interm coach. take your pick?

Re: “39” Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

In case you guys missed the news, Salim Altaf will be the intermin coach/manger until they can find a full time coach. Maulvi Mushtaq is back in England mesmerizing the County batsmen and took 10 wickets in just the first match for Sussex. So too is Rana, they are there together playing for Sussex.

In case you missed it:

Yasir Arafat is playing for Kent this season.

Plus there are others…

Hassan Adnan - Derbyshire
Mansoor Amjad - Leicestershire
Azhar Mahmood - Surrey
Younis Khan - Yorkshire
Danish Kaneria - Essex

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

Is English cricket county batsmen are so bad, that they cant or haven't learned to play Mushi. Mushi has played almost 5-7 seasons and yet they cant counter him decently. Wah rahe english babu's.

if Mansoor Amjad and Yasir Arafat are playing county, by the virtue of selectors they are/cannot be considered for the team, Right?

Talented Anwar Ali invited for Pakistan camp
By our correspondent

KARACHI: Pakistan have invited young fast bowler Anwar Ali and Junaid Zia for a training camp getting underway in Lahore from Saturday in preparations for a three-match One-day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi next month.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman told this correspondent here on Wednesday that Anwar Ali and Junaid Zia, a discarded ODI pacer, have been included in the list of probables for the Abu Dhabi series to be played from May 9-15.

** The duo has been brought in after the PCB decided to exclude three players from a 39-man list announced for the training camp as the trio is playing professional cricket in England.

Test fast bowler Shahid Nazir was allowed by the PCB to play league cricket in England while discarded Test batsman Misbah-ul-Haq and Mansoor Amjad, a young leg-spinner, have also been relieved.**

The spokesman said that the players told a PCB official on Wednesday that they preferred to play league cricket in England over the training camp.

Anwar Ali, 19, has been awarded a perfect opportunity to exhibit his talents in the training camp to be held from April 28-May 4.

The Karachi youngster rose to international limelight when he took 5-35 in a memorable Pakistani triumph in the Junior World Cup final against India in Colombo last year.

So far the selectors are on the right track, however what the players are saying doesn’t seem to be the right thing; (they prefere to play league cricket).

I know those players are making lively hood there but if they have said that then the approach is not right and those so called players should not be considered at all no matter how taleneted they are.

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

^ Junaid Zia - can someone please explain why would he be selected or anything special about him. This guy is not good enough for international level.

Re: “39” Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

:hehe:

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

Good to hear about Anwar Ali!!!!!

I don't agree with not allowing players if they choose to play League cricket at a certain time. Its their choice. Selection into the national team should always be on merit and who is the most accomplished or promising star. Attitude should be assessed when they actually appear with a Test cap and not while they are outside.

Re: “39” Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

Answer to your question…

http://www.dawn.com/2007/04/26/spt14.htm

Anwar has played an important role in Karachi Harbour’s victory in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Gold League 2006-07, taking 23 wickets at an average of 29.43. Junaid, on the other hand, captured the same number of wickets at an average of 21.73 for Lahore Shalimar which had been relegated to Silver League from Gold.

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

Is it right to say " instead of appearing for the camp, we would like to play league/county cricket" ?

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

^ Are they supposed to put their lives on hold for a "call up" one day...? or drop everything their doing including past agreements when PCB's nazar-e-karam falls on them?
I don't see any issues with ppl honoring their existing committments. "Bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush".

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

I am not saying they should stop their lives just coz they are under PCB radar, they should fulfil their commitments only if they have informed the PCB or their primary team. No other team/country allows such a case, and those players who go ahead with such ambition should not be in the probables. Again this is not a "talent hunt camp" these are probables from which Pakistan's team will be considered.

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

i hope new some faces get a chance . This team needs some new blood for sure!

Re: "39" Probables announced for the up coming series against Srilanka!

I am quite sure we will see new faces, since Younis Khan is already out, Inzi's place and openers as well, but will there be any consistency, I have my doubts; thanks to Srilanka's sizzling form (whatever the outcome of WC07), plus the pressure to perform for the younster's.
