30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

Twenty20 World Championship, 2007

Shoaib and Asif included for Twenty20s

Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif have both been named in Pakistan’s 30-man preliminary squad for the inaugural Twenty20 world championships, which take place in South Africa in September.

Shoaib and Asif last week escaped sanction from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after failing drugs tests in 2006. Both men missed the recent World Cup in the Caribbean through injury, and without them to spearhead the campaign, Pakistan slumped to a humiliating first-round exit at the hands of the Associate nation, Ireland.

The squad - which will be captained by Inzamam-ul-Haq’s successor, Shoaib Malik - will be trimmed to 15 names in August.

Squad Shoaib Malik (capt), Shahid Afridi, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Yasir Hameed, Fawad Alam, Salman Butt, Imran Nazir, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul, Rao Iftikhar, Imran Farhat, Khurram Manzoor, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Hafeez, Misbah-ul-Haq, Naveed Latif, Faisal Iqbal, Shahid Yousuf, Yasir Arafat, Sohail Tanveer, Zulqarnain Haider, Mohammad Irshad, Najaf Shah, Danish Kaneria, Abdur Rehman.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

Hafeez! wrong number!! :nono1: :insha: he won’t be in the final 15.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

^ Hafeez was a 20/20 specialist. Thats how he made it to the team in the first place. It is good to see some new faces in the squad though.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

He plays well for Faisalabad but I don't think he Is as effective for PAK.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

Hafeez indeed is a Twenty 20 specialist.

Pakistan hasn’t played enough Twenty 20 games and so we cant claim that hafeez is not effective for Pakistan in this format of the game. However so far Pakistan has played 2 Twenty 20 games and Hafeez has been Pakistan’s top scorer in both the matches.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

Khan bhai I wasn't saying he Isn't effective In Twenty20, I mean't his International carrer as a whole. There are better players then him who could do well In Twenty20, ODI's and In the TEST side.

Malik wants to lift Twenty20 trophy

Shoaib Malik wants his Pakistan side to go through the Twenty20 World Championship unbeaten and lift the trophy. The inaugural tournament of this kind will take place in South Africa during September.

Malik, who is with 22 probables at a training and fitness camp in Lahore, told reporters that the team is working hard to ensure they achieve that goal in South Africa after poor shows in the last two ICC tournaments, the Champions Trophy and the World Cup.

“We have to improve our fielding because I believe this department will play a vital role in winning the Twenty20 Championship. We can save 20 to 25 runs as a result of good fielding and that is very important,” he insisted, echoing the views of Talat Ali, team manager, who is placing special emphasis on fielding.

Commenting on India’s decision to rest several senior players for the Championship, Malik assured reporters that it will not be the case with his side. “We will select only those who deserve to feature in Twenty20 cricket and the factor of senior or junior will not be significant.”

Due to lack of match practice with Pakistan’s tour of Scotland washed out due to rain, Malik said that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was trying to organise a tri-nation tournament before the World Championship in order to provide some match practice which would help the players get accustomed to the requirements of a Twenty20 match.

^ So long as they don't encounter Ireland on the way. :D

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

The organisers made sure that one of the two losers (Pakistan and India) definitely qualify for Super 8 this time by keeping them together in 1 pool with scotland.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

waisay seriously I think Pakistan is one of the contenders along with Saffies and Aussies. With the right combination present in the team, Pakistan is a deadly team in twenty 20.

Haven’t seen an exclusive web site for the World Cup yet. However ICC and few other websites have some good material on the tournament.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

Shoaib Akhtar to return if fit

Yousuf and Razzaq unlikely for Twenty20

Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq are likely to be two big-name casualties from Pakistan’s 15-man squad for the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa.

Though Pakistan don’t announce their squad until next week, when results of dope tests taken on all 30 probables arrive, Yousuf and Razzaq are set to be sacrificed as Pakistan takes a punt and tests its younger talent and bench strength.

The uncertain position of Yousuf in particular, comes as a surprise, given his outstanding form only last year and a generally impressive record in ODIs. But his fielding, and an apparent desire to have more flexible batting options, might work against him.

**“Though it is not finalised yet, the chances of Yousuf being selected for the squad are very unlikely. Younis Khan is there as an orthodox batsman and he is a good fielder too. We want to have some fresher, younger options who give us flexibility,” a well-placed board source told Cricinfo. **

Fawad Alam, the young Karachi all-rounder who has impressed during the practice matches, and Shahid Yousuf, the Sialkot middle-order batsman, are being touted as potential replacements. Both have enjoyed success during the domestic limited-overs season. Karachi batsmen Khurram Manzoor and Khalid Latif, the former U-19 captain, have also been keenly watched.

**[Mohammad] Yousuf left the ongoing training camp yesterday and returned to Lahore, officially to be with his mother who is ill, though whispers have it that he was understandably upset once aware of the situation. Inzamam-ul-Haq, the former captain, has already said that any decision to drop Yousuf will backfire on Pakistan. **

There is unlikely to be as much surprise if Razzaq is dropped. Though his often-devastating lower-order batting and handy medium-pace suggests he is ideal for Twenty20 matches, he has been a patchy international performer over the last two years. And ordinary performances in the training camp have not helped his cause.

“He hasn’t stood out during these games,” said the official. “He has struggled to score runs and his bowling has been really lightweight even given that the pitches are really flat. Plus, he has never been outstanding in the field and the feeling is we need to have alert, fresher legs out in South Africa.”

Seven to eight places have already been decided, which still leaves almost half the squad to be picked but there is a nagging concern, among players, that Pakistan’s hectic practice schedule is taking its toll.

Shoaib Akhtar, perennially embroiled in one fitness worry or another, is certain to go if fit. The bowler missed practice again through a minor neck strain, but the injury is not considered a serious one. Umar Gul also limped off after bowling nine balls in Wednesday’s session and missed Thursday’s with a foot injury, though again the management have said it is not serious.

This is the third training camp players have attended this summer. While the first, in Abbottabad, concentrated mainly on physical conditioning, subsequent ones have involved a series of practice Twenty20 matches. The squad was originally scheduled to play two matches a day in stifling Karachi heat, but on the insistence of the players decided on one game per day, with the occasional day of gym training thrown in.

One bowler confided, however, that it was too much and that bowlers in particular were lacking motivation on flat pitches in demanding conditions.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

Actually the bit about Yousaf not getting selected for the 20-20 cup was always on the cards but Razzaq's exclusion would come as a surprise. I thought he would be one of the start players given his ability to bowl and bat along with Afridi and Shoaib Malik. In anycase I think this version of the game would suit Pakistan well with clean strikers like Malik, Akmal, Afridi, Nazir we would have a pretty explosive batting line up and they dont have to survive 50 overs so in 20 overs they can do a lot of damage. With the inclusion of Asif and Shoaib the bowling has become a lot stronger as well. With Asif's ability to bowl with the new ball he can just go through his 4 overs and Shoaib can maybe bowl a burst of 2 overs at the start maybe one in the middle or both at the end with searing pace. Sami & Gul complete a very impressive bowling attack with other bowlers like Malik, Afridi and Razzaq (maybe) completing the the rest of the overs.

In Malik, Nazir, Younis, Afridi we have some fine fielders as well for a change so maybe Yousaf's exclusion wont be all that bad in the end. Razzaq on the other hand is not one of the strongest fielders. All in all I think Pakistan can take a very strong squad, very capable of listing the cup.

 Chand roz bhi niklay to nayaa hee hota hai.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

Asif is the only one who cannot hit. Shoaib, Sami and Gull have shown us their hitting abilities. Should be a good contest.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

I'm worried about Asif, his bowling style isn't really one that's suited for these bang bang games...

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

I will be REALLY surprised to see Razzaq dropped. Yes he has had a rough time of it but this tourney suits both his batting and bowling. Yousuf is a class act and although his fielding is a bit of concern he shouldnt be thrown out without much cover. And despite his fielding, he is very good at hitting in the end, much more equipped than younis.

If I were to pick, the following team is really formidable with plenty of bowlers and hitters.

Imran Nazir, Mohammad Hafeez, Afridi, Younis Khan, Malik, Akmal, Fawad Alam, Razzaq/Any other batsmen, Shoaib, Asif, Gul.

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

apnay hi alfaz ki laaj na rakhi aap ne :cb:

Re: 30-man preliminary squad announced for Twenty 20 WC

Personally I think Razzaq should be kept in the side, he could prove very handy. I like Saby's team except for I would probably open with Butt & Nazir and bring in Hafeez much lower. Nazir can get after the bowling from the start and Butt can rotate the strike. Then we have Afridi, Malik, Akmal & Razzaq who can all hit pretty well.
