Sohail abbas and mohd wasim excluded on disciplinary grounds. Sohail is our major card and wasim is the most influential player in the mid field. It will be a hurculean effort for them to win without these two.

Go Pakistan :k:

Australia and Australia 'A'?

Hmmm... good idea, actually. They should do something similar in cricket tournaments too. Will make them slightly more interesting. :)

Sohail Abbass dropped on disciplinary grounds? Wow! I guess PHF is run by some army-wallahs to have such bite. Dropped the star-est player! :-S

Go Pakistan:jhanda:…

**Pakistan to adopt realistic approach: Tahir **](http://www.planetfieldhockey.com/PFH/Item-View-7021-0)

LAHORE, May 18: Pakistan are going with a realistic approach with an aim to win at least one tournament, hockey coach Tahir Zaman said on Sunday.

Pakistan are scheduled to play two three-nation tournaments in Perth and Sydney from May 29 to June 8 featuring India and two outfits of the hosts.

The coach said India had inducted three senior players and was a strong side. He said besides Dhanraj Pillay, Pakistan would have to tackle Indian penalty corner specialist Dilip Turkey and Yougraj Singh.

He said Australia had expanded their pool of players and would try to test maximum players in two tournaments. Pakistan in an 18-member team had included two extra players at own expenses in order to give exposure, he said and added the hosts had allowed only 16 players.

Olympian said emphasise was being given on to improve organised attack.“At least five forwards or three forwards with two half-backs must be involved in all attacks to make it more effective,” Tahir said.

Asked why veteran Mohammad Sarwar had been ousted from the squad while veteran Pillay was playing at the age of 37, the coach said Indian had great love for the game which was a motivating factor for him.

He said not the age of the player but the lack of fitness could deprive a player from playing. Tahir agreed Pakistan would achieve nothing extraordinary technically by playing India as both the countries have same style of play.

He admitted that Germany, the Netherlands and Australia were three giants and Pakistan had to beat them if they want to regain the world title. And for that purpose, he said, Pakistan should play more against the European outfits, but added a series against India in a year was not a bad idea as victory against arch-rivals had always been a morale-booster.

“It is necessary for the team build-up and promotion of the game in the region,” Tahir said. The national training camp will resume after a two-day break. Imran Rasool who had injured his thumb during the training will be fit in couple of days, the coach said.

The players will reassemble here to have a morning session on May 21 and depart for Islamabad the same day to attend a reception being hosted by the President Pervez Musharraf on May 22. The team will attend two more sessions on May 23 before departing for Australia the same night.

good luck!

Australia rout Pakistan as India triumph

** Australia rout Pakistan as India triumph **

PERTH, May 28: Australia whipped Pakistan 3-0 here Wednesday night in the opening clash of a three-nations field hockey tournament at Perth Hockey Stadium.

In a second encounter, India had too much class for an Australia A lineup, winning 2-0.Pakistan went into their match against the Australian senior side without three star players, captain Mohammad Nadeem, penalty corner expert Sohail Abbas and left-half Mohammad Waseem, all dropped from the squad for disciplinary reasons.

The trio were axed two weeks ago after they took part in the professional league in Germany without seeking permission from the Pakistan Hockey Federation.

Australia gained the initiative early and looked sharp in patches, especially considering it was the side’s first international outing in three months.

Striker Troy Elder almost scored in the first minute and the visitors were on the back foot for most of the encounter, played in ideal conditions. Elder created havoc in the Pakistan defence in the early stages, while the pace of Jamie Dwyer - the world’s best junior player last year - also caused trouble.

The combination helped set up a penalty shot in the 14th minute which Brent Livermore converted after sending Pakistan goalkeeper Ahmad Alam the wrong way. It was 2-0 in the 29th minute when Elder smashed home from a penalty corner.

Nathan Eglington put the result beyond doubt in the 61st minute with a diving goal from a goalmouth scramble after a penalty corner. Dwyer narrowly failed to add to the tally two minutes later by blazing over the bar form pointblank range with an empty net beckoning.

The Perth series is a lead-up event to August’s Champions’ Trophy contest in The Netherlands and next year’s Olympics in Athens. India had too much poise for Australia A.

Though the Australian second-strings battled hard in the first half, the visitors opened the scoring in the 25th minute with Dilip Tirkey finishing off a penalty corner.

Australia A goalkeeper Stephen Lambert had an excellent game, deflecting many waves of Indian attacks. But Gagan Ajit Singh tapped in for a clinching goal after excellent lead-up work in the 60th minute

I’m sure they can do reasonably well if they play two cricket teams. I’m not sure they could afford to do that in hockey, but I guess this way their youngsters gain some experience by playing against top sides.

** Australia ‘A’ shock pathetic Pakistan **

PERTH, May 29: Australia beat India 2-0 here on Thursday to march into Sunday’s tri-nations challenge series final as Australia A managed a shock 5-3 win over Pakistan, leaving Pakistan facing an uphill battle.

An on-form Australia will be a strong favorite in the decider. They already whipped Pakistan 3-0 in the opening encounter of the contest a day earlier.Australia began brightly against India, who finished fourth at last year’s Champions’ Trophy tournament, with striker Tristram Woodhouse poaching a goal in the third minute.

The 28-year-old pounced on a favourable rebound from Indian goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan to score his second goal in international company. The visitors hotly disputed the goal, believing the ball went over the backline beforehand, but the goal stood.

Australia were unable to mount many more attacking raids for the rest of the first half. With Australia failing to control the midfield, India threatened to equalise through one of their many penetrating counter-attacks.

Only fine work by goalkeeper Mick Hickman foiled strikers Prabjot Singh and Gagan Ajit Singh, ensuring Australia led 1-0 at halftime.Early in the second half, Australian midfielder Brent Livermore was given plenty of space to create a goal in the 44th minute.

His pass to Woodhouse was deflected past Chauhan, with Michael McCann knocking the ball over the line.India pressed harder in the latter parts of the match, but failed to make an impact on the scoreboard.

The four-team competition is an important lead-up event to August’s Champions’ Trophy in the Netherlands and next year’s Olympics in Athens. In Thursday’s second game, Australia A striker Andrew Smith opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Adam Commens’ spectacular diving effort for the second, two minutes later. But Pakistan’s Ghazanfar Ali clinically converted from a penalty corner in the 15th minute before teenager Steven Boyce added Australia A’s third shortly after to make it 3-1.

Ali again found a path through the secondary side’s penalty corner defence in the 29th minute to reduce the deficit before the tourists were again exposed before the break.

Lucas Judge slipped behind goalkeeper Ahmed Alam to follow-up Robbie Hammond’s powerful drive and tap home from close range in the 33rd minute, making it 4-2 for Australia’s second string side at the interval.

The visitors were re-energised in the second half, but could not breach the home side’s defence. Judge deflected an excellent pass from Zain Wright into the net to seal the result for Australia’s young hopefuls in the 60th minute. Pakistan’s Mudassar Ali Khan fired a penalty shot over the bar a minute before Shakeel Abbasi scored a fine running goal four minutes from time.-AFP

hockey me bhi lag gai :hehe:

** Another India-Pakistan hockey thriller in offing **

PERTH: The stage is set for another interesting duel between arch-rivals India and Pakistan who clash here Saturday for a place in the final of tri- nation challenge hockey tournament.

India hold a slight advantage, having won one of their two previous league matches, and need only a draw Saturday to qualify for the final.

On the other hand, Pakistan, who suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Australia ‘A’ Thursday, have lost both their league matches so far and must win by a comprehensive margin Saturday in order to make it to the final.

Australia have already secured a final berth having defeated both India and Pakistan and are yet to concede a goal in the tournament, a fact that underlines their awesome form.

Knowing well the hype and hopes of an expectant nation every time they take the field against Pakistan, India will be keen for an Asian Games encore when they beat their rivals by a 4-3 margin in semi-finals.

The two sides played each other four times last year with India winning three of them. Pakistan’s only victory came in the playoff for 3-4 place in the Champions Trophy.

Indian team may draw some heart from the recent record but they know everything else will cease to matter and boil down to their performance in the field Saturday. India coach Rajinder Singh was not exactly a relaxed man because the team’s form has been mixed here.

They did well to blank Australia ‘A’ whose strength can be gauged from the fact they tamed an otherwise strong Pakistan for a 3-0 win.

The four-team competition is an important lead-up event to August’s Champions’ Trophy in the Netherlands and next year’s Olympics in Athens.
