Re: 3 Brit Pakistanis from B'ham arrested for terror plot
You dont want to admit it, but dont you think you have disproportionally greater number of Pakistanis in the UK getting involved in crime, and extremism?
Dont feel like we are singling you out, as Pakistanis, hearing such things about English Pakistanis isnt good news for anyone...
By proportion, yes UK has a greater number. Also, US Pakistanis mostly belong to middle-class as compare to UK Pakistanis who belong to working and lower working class.
Re: 3 Brit Pakistanis from B'ham arrested for terror plot
did these guys have jobs and families? sounds like a bunch of dumb losers who didnt have much to do and probably will end up in jail for talking crap they probably didnt even mean.

Might have something to do with the Welfare state... To many Pakistanis not working and collecting benefits... I dont know the stats on this issue so I cant comment, but when you have idle minds, you know what happens.

The jury was told Mr Ali registered two accounts on eBay’s charity website “half in jest” in September 2006 with the user names “terrorshop” and “shopterror”.

Pakistanis in the US have done relatively well.. I recall there was a thread on how Candian Pakistanis had higher rates of unemployment and even poverty then compared to American Pakistanis.
A key difference might be that the US doesnt give handouts. The state provides for only the VERY Rich and VERY VERY poor. So most Pakistanis do not fit into either category and hence do not qualify. This I think forces a degree of self reliance.
When my wife was in the hospital, I was not working at the time, and she could not, so we were stuck with a huge bill. We did not qualify for Medicaid as our income was still to high to qualify. So being stuck with such a huge bill was unfair on some level, but it kept us from being complacent and thankfully were able to pay it off eventually.
We know one of the younger ones not the three mentioned in this article who has been charged along with these.. personally and tbh i feel for his parents but when his mum was trying to pass the blame on others i thought your son is a grown man, he knew what he was getting himself into. Just pathetic! And stuff like this causes tension in communities and just gives muslims a bad name

All these terror suspects come from salafi background. You'll never find brelvis or sufis even thinking about such criminal acts regardless of their financial status. So I think it's a combination of financial background and affiliation with a radical ideology.
Re: 3 Brit Pakistanis from B’ham arrested for terror plot
Watched it on news today, I am so much frustrated. How the hell they used to go door to door to collect charity in the name of helping people back home.
50% Pakistani and 50% Arab Sumalis live in this area.

Partly true that Pakistanis in America have done better than ones in UK. We have both extremes here. While there is a very active extremist lobby here, UK has a lot of Pakistanis representing them in the parliament in all three parties including a Pakistani who until recently was the co -chairwoman of the conservative party and member of the cabinet. Under Blair there were at least two ministers of Pakistani origin and even now in the shadow cabinet the justice minster portfolio is held by a Pakistani. There are a number of Pakistanis in house of Lords as well. I dont see any Pakistan in American cabinet yet. Are there any in the congress?
Re: 3 Brit Pakistanis from B'ham arrested for terror plot
We have had terrorism in the past from Irish Republicans, where at least I understood their aims. I don't understand what these guys were out to achieve. What were they demanding? what was their goal? Violence for the sake of violence is something that only lunatics would indulge in. If these guys really wanted to support their communities and humanity in general then they could have done 1001 positive things. We live in a democracy and we can make our views known without indulging in mindless violence. Unlike many other communities that are just concentrated in the capital, the Pakistani community is well spread out throughout the country with sizeable numbers in many areas, therefore they are taken seriously by all parties as they have the power to make or break MPs.

Generalizations are never good.
I was talking in general, not pointing to specific cases, because when we talk about communities, then you have to speak of GENERAL trends among that community. If I had said that ALL Pakistanis in England are criminals and extremists, then I would be faulted. Judging INDIVIDUALS according to a generalization about their community would obviously be wrong.
One reason that Pakistanis havent become more prominent in politics in the US is because Pakistanis are still a relative minority, even among minorities. Because they are generally first generation. And because Muslims as a group do not vote as a single bloc... Also, many Pakistani at present are concentrated in particular professions. So you have many people in construction, driving Taxis, as doctors and IT, and dont often see people choosing other professions. These profession, some of them are easy for an immigrant to get into, taxi for example. And we all know how much Desis love the medical field.
Just like in the UK we have had bad apples among American Pakistanis, however as a general group, not talking about specifics, Pakistanis have done quite well for themselves.
I suppose you guys have many successful individual cases, while we have done well as a community but haven't produced exceptional individual cases as yet.
Re: 3 Brit Pakistanis from B'ham arrested for terror plot
Pakistanis in the UK are far more segregated, that's the key issue here. This segregation began at a time when minorities had few rights, thus, you have the two extremes in terms of economic prosperity. When you live in an insular community, your prejudices, be they positive or negative, become self enforced. Extremists thrive in such environments.
Said it before and will say it again, it's trash that was trash where it was moved here and stayed trash and had offspring that it raised to be trash which got together with more trash like itself and became a menace, sometimes turning other non trashy yet socially awkward loner loser types into trash by giving them a sense of belonging to a group...of trash.
UK govt and its lax attitude about having imported idiots from Middle East played a role where this socially self segregated trash found a bigger purpose and groups like high UL Tahrir, mohajiroun, ghuraba and other loser groups gained ground.
