2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

Dont you know Afridi at all? He has always been like that and asking him to change his style would be cruel to his game. Bob woolmer has given him free hand and he is scoring consistent runs these days because of that. But And I agree with whoever said that Afridi is not our solution to test opening. He should be playing in middle order where his dismissal wont hurt us as such.

Yes it would have been ultra nice had afridi survived the day. But remember he is the one who has given team some slight glimmer of hope. He is not playing for himself. He is an instinctive and impulsive player and if he comes off rest assured pakistan will have a chance just like he did today. Surviving to save a match is not his trait and I doubt it ever will be.

Indians are still the most likely winners and for that they owe to ever reliable Dravid :k:

p.s Is it jsut me or someone agrees that Indian declared a bit late for their cause? I mean they might still win it but …

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

It all rests on Taufeeq umar,Abdul Razzaq & Younis khan...all 3 must score good...we know that inzi & yoyo would score...
& why are they play M.Khalil again...this guy has played 3 ODI...& 2 tests with 5 wks in all....he has bowled 25 overs in this match... 0 wicket....same happened in the last test in Perth...we can instead play an all rounder for the 3rd fast bowler...

Pakistan go for stiff target after Dravid’s twin tons](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)

CALCUTTA, India (AFP) - Pakistan made a bold attempt to chase a stiff 422-run target for victory in the second Test against an India inspired by Rahul Dravid at the Eden Gardens.

Shahid Afridi smashed a run-a-ball 59 and Taufeeq Umar an unbeaten 29 as Pakistan reached 95-1 at stumps on the penultimate day. Younis Khan had yet to score.

Dravid, 32, earlier completed a century in each innings of a Test as India posted 407-9 declared on top of a first-innings lead of 14.

The stage is set for an exciting final day on Sunday. Pakistan now need 327 more runs in 90 overs on a slow turning track where the odd ball kept a little low.

Only three teams – the West Indies (2003), India (1976) and Australia (1948) – have so far scored more than 400 in the fourth innings to win a Test in the history of the game.

Afridi hit two sixes and nine fours to give his team a brisk start, putting on 93 for the opening wicket with Umar.

India heaved a sigh of relief when Afridi was caught by Sourav Ganguly at fine leg while trying to sweep leg-spinner Anil Kumble in the penultimate over of the day.

The hosts were indebted to Dravid for setting a challenging target as the stylish batsman followed his first-innings 110 with a chanceless 135.

This was only the sixth instance in Indian cricket that a batsman had scored a hundred in each innings of a match. Sunil Gavaskar did it three times, Dravid twice and Vijay Hazare once.

Dravid’s 20th Test hundred in 88 matches came just when his team needed a long innings.

India were in trouble in the morning but Dravid came to the rescue with a 165-run stand for the fifth wicket with young Dinesh Karthik, who cracked a career-best 93.

The hosts lost captain Ganguly after adding just 21 to their overnight total of 133-3 and then saw Venkatsai Laxman retire hurt after scoring only two.

India were only 170 ahead when Laxman left the field with a swelling over the left eye, suffered while trying to fend off a rising delivery from fast bowler Mohammad Sami. He later returned to make 24.

Dravid, called ‘The Wall’ for his rock-like defence and consistency, lived up to his reputation with yet another elegant knock which shattered Pakistan’s hopes of retricting India’s lead.

There was never a moment of uncertainty in Dravid’s stroke-play as he cut and drove on his way to a century. He hit 15 fours in his 283-ball knock.

When Dravid was caught in the deep by Asim Kamal off leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, India were safe with a lead of 335.

Karthik, 19, batted sensibly under pressure to provide valuable support to his senior partner.

Playing only his seventh Test, the wicket-keeper looked set to score a deserving maiden century when he was bowled by Kaneria going for big shots before the declaration. He struck 13 fours in his 140-ball knock.

The Test was wide open in the morning session before Pakistan encountered Dravid and Karthik.

Sami did the damage in his lively opening spell when he held a return catch to account for Ganguly, who mis-timed a pull after adding just eight to his overnight four to leave his home crowd disappointed.

Sami, Kaneria and seamer Abdul Razzaq finished with three wickets apiece.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

I have a really bad feeling about this. If pakistan aim for a win, it could possibly be their own undoing as theres chances of losing wickets. I would aim for a draw...

How about a poll mods?

"On day 5 of the Calcutta test, should Pakistan step up its game and aim for a win (327 runs in 90 overs) or should they play defensively and try to bat out the whole day?"

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

I am sure that Inzimam and company will not let Indian win so easily. The way the pitch is playing I am sure Pakistan can still manage a draw and even go on after wining it. I am saying this becuz of the way the pitch is playing. If one just stay there and play his natural game he can manage good runs.

All the best Pakistan.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

To add on Afridi I must say whatever his playing style is, he is becoming an important member of the team. Has been scoring runs on regular basis and picking up wickets.

I am sure that time is coming soon when he is our main cricketer and who knows even a captian.

Am I little too optimistic and happy over his performance ?
May be

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

Chee, I think a defensive game is the most likely.

Saby, I know Afridi's style, but I still don't know what good it does to a team unless its a 1-dayer. And yea Mr. Ganguly played a mean card by not calling it a day sooner.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

There is a very fine line between stupidity and bravery. The Pakistani team should make sure that they remain on the braver side. The key to chasing this target is to bat on merit for the first two or 1.5 sessions and then even if we have to score at 4.5 runs per over in the last session that won't be very hard. Other then that we should take quick singls, convert 1 into 2 and 2 into 3. I think Pakistan batting lineup has enough talent that if they can stay their for the first 2 sessions without losing wicket than they can certainly chase down the target.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

I think Pakistan should play to win. I have a feeling that if they play for a draw, they will most certainly lose. Plus I don't see any reason why a team that scored 344 runs in 50 over (Karachi, last year), can't score 327 in 90 overs. Of course they're not playing in karachi, but I believe if they play with the right approach, they can win this game.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

I can't see Pakistan winning this game . Lady luck really needs to be smiling on them to even get a draw.

:D

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

Can there be more entertaining draws in test matches? I guess not.

Pakistan requires an average of 3.6 runs per over to win this match. It is a difficult task considering the pitch condition and unreliable batting but it is very doable. Pakistan should approach the first two sessions very professionally and go for the win. Keep the wickets in hand & score single/doubles. Yohana and Younis are the key for success in the first tow sessions and then we have Razzaq and Inzi to wrap things up.

This one is gonna be a nail biter. The only way Pakistan can lose this one is if there batsmen let them down…and how many times have we seen that.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

Taufeeq & Younis all the way through 90 overs…voila :k:

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

inshallah.. pakistan is going to win this one…:jhanda:

as fayz said… its very doable..
all they have to do is to score couple of runs in an over.. no need for big shot… araam say khailain to bhi hojaye ga

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

khala jee ka ghar samgha howa ha kaya…abay match bachhha lo to yaheee bhot bareee batt ha…now you will blame me of negative mentality…but kiya karooon…pak has such an inconsistent batting line up…allah reham karay

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

it is “doable” no doubt, but remember when in first inning our team was 273-2 all of us were talking of giving at least 250 or 300 runs lead to India… but then we saw our team crash to 393 :frowning: . So just wait and watch. We have scored 95 so far with one wicket already down (but that is not an issue, next 2-3 wicket hold the key for the game). We need another 326 runs to “win” which doesn’t seem to be a huge target but then its 4th inning and 5th day when wickets wear down to dust many a times.

All the best to Pakistan :jhanda:

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

I think its gonna be win or loose, draw is much less likely. Our batsmen are stroke players and if a couple set in they r gonna score fast and if there is collapse, then there isn't anyone who is going to dig in and stand at wicket.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

Let me give you a lesson in cricket my friend because it seems you need it :

(1) This is a 5th day wicket of a test match, the other match was an ODI.
(2) In test matches, the rules for calling a ball wide is much more relaxed compared to ODIs…which means bowlers can ball negatively on both sides of the wicket(and even bouncers) to stem the run flow (if it comes to that).
(3) The bowlers don’t have an individual 10 overs quota. Kumble can bowl the whole day if he likes to.
(4) There are no fielding restrictions in the first 15 overs.

And finally , I am surprised that certain news media articles and some guppies here are kind of implying that Pakistan has batted postively (as if by design) and they are playing to win the game instead of just trying to draw it.
Let me say this - Afridi would have played the way he did, even if the target was 900 runs - so nobody can telll for sure if Pak batted with any pre-planned strategy.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

^ that.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

Isn’t Afridi the same person who scored 141 or so in one of Tests in India in 1999? Please don’t tell me that it was because he was playing under Miandad. It is sad affairs of our cricket that so many of us Pakistanis have to settle for a “utility” player in Test matches, I’m not denouncing or undermining Afridi’s efforts in this match at all but what I’m saying is that we should’ve a good opening and a good bowler lack of which has made Afridi’s inclusion vital.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata (Merged)

So, I hope India is kickin some major arse. :p I heard first one was a draw, then there was a fleeting rumour of Rahul scoring a few centuries. The last I heard was second is heading towards a draw too.

Are the rumours accurate?
