England won the toss and will bat.
Monty is out, not sure how they decided to drop him over swan after the first test, more interestingly he has not been replaced by Harimson, but Onions.

**Indeed a gr8 start
England 161/0
n most probably *Hauritz *wont ball again in this match
**
Great going by England 179/0
England have not beaten Australia at Lords since 1934 but this might be their moment
Looking at the bowling of both sides, they lack penetration and quality. Nether team has any outstanding bowlers. Flintoff and Johnson are decent; Brett Lee is perhaps the only real strike bowler but even his test bowling average is 30.81. England collapsed at Cardiff mainly because it was the 4th innings/final day of the test. That pressure got them rather than the quality of Australian bowling. I think we will see more draws in this Ashes series.

Finally a wicket for Australia 196/1
Cook unlucky to miss his century

If it is raining runs for Eng then why'd it be a drought for Aus?
If it is raining runs for Eng then why'd it be a drought for Aus?
Agreed.
It's only day 1 and there is no reason to believe that Australia would struggle on this wicket. Neither team has out-and-out attacking bowlers but Aussies w'd be batting last on this wicket (unless they take a big first innings lead again cf. Cardiff) and 4th innings always brings with it drama and pressure regardless of the quality of bowling
Re: 2nd Test: England v Australia at Lord's, Jul 16-20, 2009
I agree, the Aussie bowling is crap. 3 of their 4 bowlers average over 30, one over 40. Only Johnson has taken 100 wickets. England should be batting Aus out of the game but.........
England lost too many wickets today after the fantastic start. Almost a 200 run opening partnership. Cant think when England last did that in an ashes game. Maybe Flintoff can get some reverse going in his last test match @ Lords.
Re: 2nd Test: England v Australia at Lord's, Jul 16-20, 2009
Eng finish the day at 364/6, not bad.
England 425 all out
Australia 6/1
Anderson to Hughes, OUT, Anderson strikes! Hughes tries to pull down leg side and England are confident it's tickled his gloves, Rudi Koertzen's left index finger eventually confirms their suspicions
This test is going the same way as the first test. In cardiff, England made 435 in the first innings. The only difference is this time Australia might not be able to take a big first innings lead...let's wait and see
(cricinfo)
"Looking out the window in Newbury at heavy rain, probably coming your way, though might be timed for lunch," reports Owen Matthews. Well Owen, given that I'm in Melbourne, that would be quite a remarkable weather pattern! But point taken, we are expecting rain at Lord's some time today
Australia 10/2
Well, Ricky Ponting didn't look happy with that call, there was a double noise but Hot Spot and the naked eye indicate that Ponting has struck his boot and the ball has hit pad only, so he's definitely unlucky. Might have been lbw anyway, Hawkeye says it would have hit leg
6.6
Anderson to Ponting, OUT, big appeal, and what's happened here? It was a dual lbw/caught appeal and Ponting is out caught at first slip! Angled in, there must've been an inside edge onto the pad and after Koertzen checks if the ball carried, he gives Ponting out!
RT Ponting c Strauss b Anderson 2 (15b 0x4 0x6) SR: 13.33
Australia 114/5 in deep trouble now
112 more needed to avoid the follow-on
Australia looking down the barrel ![]()
Told you so. England have a great chance of winning at Lords for the first time since 1934
But you also agreed against that here ![]()
Re: 2nd Test: England v Australia at Lord’s, Jul 16-20, 2009
Aus 156/8 ![]()
True. But Australia can’t keep conceding 400+ totals in the first innings and expect to better it everytime esp. when they are no longer as dominant as they once used to be. They should infact consider themselves lucky not to be chasing an even bigger total. At 196/0, England were probably looking at a score of 500-550.
The batting relies heavily on Ponting. I suppose the conditions at Lords are vastly different from Cardiff with the ball swinging and seaming. Still Australia should not have batted this awfully - the frequent rain interruptions also did not help
Re: 2nd Test: England v Australia at Lord’s, Jul 16-20, 2009
cracker of a match… only if Rain does not play its game… England will beat AUS @ lord’s only after 75 years ![]()
