228 killed in Karachi

KARACHI: Torrential rain and thunderstorms have killed at least 228 people and injured about 200 others in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, provincial health minister Syed Sardar Ahmed said Sunday.

He said 43 people were killed as rain and high winds lashed the city on Saturday, while “the bodies of 185 more victims were identified today (Sunday).”

The death toll had now risen to 228, he said, adding some 200 other people were injured, mostly in the suburbs of the port city.

The heavy wind and rain late Saturday wreaked havoc in Karachi, which received 17.2 millimeters of rain within one hour.

Many people died in roof collapses and electrocutions before much of the city plunged into darkness after its power grid blacked out.

The worst hit area was the impoverished Gadap neighbourhood, where roofs of shanty houses collapsed on families, officials said.

A spokesman for the Edhi Trust, which runs welfare homes and a massive network of ambulances, also put the toll at more than 200.

Ahmed said an emergency had been declared at all government hospitals and doctors and paramedical staff had any leave cancelled.

Torrential rain and gale-force winds uprooted trees, power pylons and huge steel billboards causing damage to buildings and vehicles.

Sporadic incidents of rioting were reported from different parts of Karachi where people complained of a night-long power outage.

Officials said the power supply was restored to most parts of the city Sunday.

Re: 228 killed in Karachi

One thing I have to say is that the billbaords in Karachi are very poorly engineered. The slightest wind gust tips them over. I remeber that on a visit to Karachi few years back there were some wind gusts that people called "Aandhi" that ripped huge billbaords from the ground and I was very surprised with that. I live in Florida and have seen my share of hurricanes but have not seen a billboard pulled from ground like that. The poles and billbaords that are properly anchored and engineered should easily survive gusts like that. It does not need any high tech mterial. Concrete needs to poured at the base to hold the posts. I have seen structures made of wood posts survive major hurricanes. It appears to me (from the pictures) that the practice there is to bolt metal pole to cement top surface without attention to the strength of the ground itself. The result is that the entire base with bolts is easily pulled out with smallest wind gust.

Re: 228 killed in Karachi

They're saying about 250 now...:(

May Allah have mercy. It was quite a storm yesterday really! Countless huge tress uprooted, even 40 foot billboards blown off.

Two weeks ago the Met office was making a fuss over a storm which wasn't even supposed to hit Pakistan, this struck out of the blue, didn't they have any clue enough to inform the public earlier?

May Allah bless those who lost lives and loved ones, those who're braving injuries, heat as temp yesterday was 44C declared; the declared is always a few degrees below actual by some bizarre policy in warm countries. And may God also have mercy on those braving life with prolonged power outages. We have been having massive power issues, voltage fluctuations damaging appliances, load shedding, rain related blasts, wire fires, short circuits, major faults on poles, transformers, all ending up in hours upon hours without electricity. It comes and it goes. Or it stays away for 3hrs, 6 hrs, 8 hrs, 12 hrs and even 24 at a stretch!

Re: 228 killed in Karachi

I hope the tragedy finally makes Pakistani and provincial government to fix the domestic infrastructre. So many lives could have been saved if measure were taken.

**PM announces to give compensation to Karachi rain-affectees

ISLAMABAD:** Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz announced on Saturday that the government would give the compensation to the Karachi rain-affectees and the steps are being taken to review the losses caused by the rain related incidents, which left over 230 dead and over 200 others wounded.

The Prime Minister announced this while talking to the newsmen during his surprise visit to a Utility Store here at Bhara Kahu.

He expressed his grief over the loss of life and injuries, caused by rainstorm in Karachi. The provincial government and city administration have initiated the relief work and ‘extra emergency’ has been declared in the hospitals, he said.

Shaukat Aziz said the relief efforts were being carried at a fast pace, with special relief camps established in most affected areas to tackle the situation.

The Prime Minister said the federal government was in contact with the provincial government and city administration and will provide them every possible help and assistance to handle the situation.

Re: 228 killed in Karachi

so sad to hear that 250 odd people have died from torrential rain and thunderstorms. This should perhaps not be happening in the 21st century. I am sure the majority of the victims are poor people living in poor housing, substandard buildings etc. One could understand if it was an earthquake etc. but should floods, storms etc. really be claiming so many lives every so many years? Token compensation is not the answer here but preventive measues like better housing for the vulnerable etc., but does any government really care?

Re: 228 killed in Karachi

MQM at it again:

Harassing Edhi Foundation volunteers and threatening them with life for taking dead bodies off the ambulances.

I am at a loss for words. WHY?

Re: 228 killed in Karachi

because of economic boom
GDP has increased with the death of 250 people
government is really happy and waiting for more to die soon so economy should grow more

Re: 228 killed in Karachi

Maybe my Urdu reading is bad, but I did not read MQM workers rather ‘armed men’ threathing the volunteers.

Re: 228 killed in Karachi

Worst may be seen today as huge clouds are on their way towards Karachi.
