22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

No need to state who the target was again. Good thing we have time to protest against cartoons.

Up to eight dead in Pakistan blasts-minister ISLAMABAD, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Explosions hit a procession of Shi'ite Muslims in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing up to eight people, and possibly more, in what could have been a suicide bombing, the interior minister said. A Shi'ite cleric said up to 20 people were killed in what he said was a suicide attack in the town of Hangu in North West Frontier Province during a procession to mark Ashura, but his figures could not immediately be confirmed. Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao said there had been three explosions. He said he had conflicting reports as to the number of dead. "It's possibly four to eight and there could be even more," he told Reuters, adding that it could have been a suicide bombing. An army officer, who did not want to be identified, said dozens of people were wounded. Sherpao said troops had been sent to restore order after angry Shi'ites went on the rampage and burned shops. Riffat Pasha, police chief of NWFP, told Reuters there had been some shooting into the air after the blasts. "We have sent armoured personnel carriers there, and the Frontier Constabulary is also there," he said. "The situation is pretty much under control. (Posted @ 13:15 PST)

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

This is very sad. Inna lillahe wa innalahi rajoun.

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

how are the two events related? shiites also protested against the cartoon

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

inna lillah wa inna ileyhi rajioon. we were thankful this year round there werent any incidents, and this ofcourse had to happen to prove those of us wrong who hold optimistic views about Muslims.

the two events are related realdeal to the extent of demonstrating the lack of outrage in the rest of the Muslim world about a crime just as heinous carried out in the name of Islam by people amongst us. While both shias and sunnis protested against the cartoon, unfortunately, not many prominent sunni voices protest against these bombings.

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

Absolutely right. Good post ravage.

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

Was an unfortunate incident.

These jihadis will destory us Muslims. Instead of economic development they are interested in bombing their own brothers.

The news from Afghanistan is no better with 5 dead in shia-sunni clashes. So far Iraq is quiet thank God.

Are you one as well, k/

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

Interesting article about the relatively mild protests in Pak about the cartoons

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4688624.stm

The response in Pakistan to the controversy over Danish caricatures of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad has been relatively measured and restrained, taking many observers by surprise. Pakistan is, after all, a country that has a history of violent protests against any perceived sacrilege

More recently, the 2005 controversy over the alleged desecration of the Muslim holy book of Koran in the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay led to widespread protests across Pakistan.

In comparison, the cartoon controversy has drawn little more than the regulation fare: an inconsequential condemnation from the upper house of parliament, echoed by President Musharraf, and diplomatic protest by the government to various European countries.
There have been some demonstrations by religious groups - nearly all poorly attended - besides a few newspaper editorials urging the West to show restraint in such matters

“Muslim leadership the world over has historically been the most cynical manipulator of Islam - and this is especially true of Pakistan,” says one analyst. “Injured religious sentiment has seldom translated into public unrest unless there was political mileage to be gained from it by some vested interest,” he argues.

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

You mean a jihadi or a shia?

No to both.

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

Thats just plain tragic. I salute Mushrraf for trying to root out these pathetic individuals.

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

Thank you fartguru and aejaz

TheRealDeal, do you agree with that article? I honestly dont, while Amreeka typically provokes a more violent reaction, condemnation about Denmark cartoons has been pretty much equivocal.

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

As a Muslim this saddens me. Religious fanatics are hell bend on destroying the religion they claim to love so much.

Re: 22 killed in suicide bombing in Pakistan: NWFP

I dont understand these people.. They only attack on Moharum... We dont hear about any attacks until Moharum comes along.. So do these people hate Shias or do they simply dislke anyone who mourns the martyrdom of Hussein?
