2006 World Cup draw

**Stage set for 2006 World Cup draw **](BBC SPORT | Football | World Cup 2006 | England face another Sweden test)

The 32 participants of the World Cup finals will find out who they will face in the group stage when Friday’s draw takes place from 1930 GMT in Leipzig.

England are the second seeds behind Brazil, while Argentina, France, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Germany are the other top-ranked teams and make up pot one.

They could face unseeded big names Czech Republic, Portugal and Holland.

And France defender William Gallas admitted to French paper L’Equipe: “I would like to avoid the Netherlands.”

However, Gallas’ team-mate Anthony Reveillere is of the view that “we’ll have to knock out some of these countries to go all the way. So the sooner, the better”.

And Arsenal’s Thierry Henry concurs. He told France Football magazine: "You can’t start saying one team is stronger than another.

“You’ve got to be prepared to tackle anyone if you want to win the World Cup.”

Young Argentine striker Lionel Messi is another player who appears to have no fear. He declared: "I’d like to play England, Brazil, the Netherlands or Portugal.

“I think those teams, plus Germany, will be the ones still in towards the end.”

France coach Raymond Domenech believes all the games will be tough.

He reflected: “I know some best possible groupings that brought us back home very early.”

In 2002, France were drawn with Senegal, Uruguay and Denmark. They lost two games and drew the other without scoring.

Of those defeats, one was at the hands of Senegal, who have not qualified this time - but Africa remains strongly represented.

And England assistant coach Tord Grip confessed to being unfamiliar with teams from that continent.

He said: "We have strong files on almost every team in the hat. Perhaps only our files on some of the African teams could be improved.

“But we have the African Nations Cup coming up in January so we can use that to take a closer look at our opponents, once we know who they are.”

One team who will not be a surprise to anyone is holders Brazil - and German legend Franz Beckenbauer is expecting them to do well again.

“Brazil are the favourites for me,” said Beckenbauer, who is head of the World Cup organising committee.

"I watched them at the Confederations Cup and they were brilliant.

“If they perform like that at the World Cup they are going to be very hard to stop.”

Interestingly, compliments - of sorts - have been returned by Brazil coach Brazil chief Carlos Alberto Parreira, who feels Germany are trying to underplay their ability.

“Germany will be our toughest opponent,” Parreira told Stern magazine.

“You Germans moan too much and should stop!” said Parreira. “We do not believe you. Germany will be thereabouts next year.”

Meanwhile, German striker Gerald Asamoah hopes the draw does not pit him in the same group as Ghana - the county of his birth.

Asamoah, who was born in Mampong but emigrated to Germany in 1989, said: “I would rather meet them in the knock-out stage.”

Another side who may make an impact are 2002 hosts and semi-finalists South Korea, who looked impressive in the Confederations Cup in June, and the USA.

For the draw on Friday, around 3,700 people will be present in the auditorium at the huge trade fair hall in Leipzig’s Neue Messe exhibition centre.

The World Cup finals in Germany begin on 9 June 2006 and the final takes place in Berlin on 9 July.

Group E Is the toughest one. Four good teams and All can qualify. Group C is a close second followed by Group F. Last two groups have three goood temas but group E have four good teams.

wow. Should be really exciting. :hula:

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

I think group B is easy and England and Sweden should qualify without any problem.

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

Yes England got lucky but unlike Champions league where finishing first or second doesnt matter, England will to finish top of the group to face an easier team in next stage and it wont be easy. Paraguay and Trinidad are not slouch of teams either and will give swedes and englsih a very hard time.

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

Group of death for the U.S. We have the toughest draw for any single team. I think Group C is the toughest, followed by Group E. Argentina, Ivory Coast, Netherlands and Serbia are all very good sides. In fact, Ivory Coast and Serbia who are the weaker of the 4 teams are better than any of Germany's three opponents in Group A, IMO.

F*! We are so **ed. It would be quite an achievement to get 2nd place in that group.

First round cake-walks for Germany, France, and Spain. Oh, how I wish the US was placed in one of those groups.

England look in decent shape. Sweden certainly will be difficult and I really think that Paraguay will be a tough opponent. Of course, there is a reprieve with T&T who could very well finish dead last in the tournament.

I'd love to see Italy in the Final. They can definitely get there if they avoid Brazil in the round of 16.

Well, every time a WC field looks one way, there are bound to be a few surprises that change everything completely, like Senegal, USA, and South Korea in '02 or Nigeria in '98. So, based on current form, here's my gut reaction stab in the dark. Of course, the tourney is six months away, so who knows how much these teams will fluctuate.

PREDICTIONS:
(Group winners first)

GROUP A:

Germany *
Poland *
Ecuador
Costa Rica

GROUP B:

England *
Sweden *
Paraguay
Trinidad & Tobago

GROUP C:

Netherlands *
Argentina *
Serbia Montenegro
Ivory Coast

GROUP D:

Portugal *

Ghana

GROUP F:

Australia
Japan

GROUP G:

France *
Korea *
Switzerland
Togo

GROUP H:

Saudi Arabia

KNOCKOUT ROUND

Germany vs. Sweden = Germany

QUARTERS

SEMIS

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

^ Wake Up!!!!

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

Holland's group is certainly the most difficult:

Holland, Argentina, Serbia, Ivory Coast are all class teams:

Holland: first in their group
Argentina: second in their group, one of the first countries to qualify. Second favorites behind Brazil
Serbia: first in their group
Ivory Coast: ousted the liked of Cameroon, Egypt, Marocco from the WC

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

Brazil will win.

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

Too early to say who will win but my heart says England. Ok, Ok I did say heart and not head. :)

Italians and Dutch are always most likely to find themselves in tough groups and tough opponents. :)
[/Quote]

Regarding how Italy was sent-off from Korea-Japan drama (off-sides and red card), it is definitely (or at least, most likely) an European team lifting this trophy next year. Even with the likes of Pele or Maradona still available, Brazil or Argentina can't lift the trophy in Germany.

Argentina may be knocked out from group stage, once again and Netherland & Czech Replic will knock every opponent (in knock out) out of their way till they lift the trophy or make way for Italy or Germany.

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

I think this time there will be a real upset. A world champion that nobody would expect and that has never won the World Cup before.

Something like the European Cup that was won by Greece.

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

Huh?

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

If any team deserves the cup purely on the merit of talent and foot balling skills it has to be one and only Brazil....Ronaldo,Robinhco,Adriano(one has to sit in the bench) in front....Kaka and Ronaldinhco midfield which other team has this line up?.......But best team not necessary to win the cup always...

I am backing unluckisest team int the universe, Holland after Brazil.Definitly they deserve a world cup.

Re: 2006 World Cup draw

The US will finish the group second at the expense of Italy and beat Brazil.

It’s the new face of world soccer, book it
